Mad News, October 4-8, 2008

  • Wired interviews real ad men about Mad Men. These features are always interesting, and I love this exchange:

Wired.com: Has an ad executive ever peed himself in your presence?
Greg: No, but I have seen a fair amount of vomit.

  • Blogger & Basketcase Enlightmentgirl wonders What Would Joan Do?
  • Our favorite TV Junkie sent me some cool stuff, including this Daily Mail article (you have to scroll down) on how to imitate Mad Men “prom” fasion.
  • The Amherst Bulletin gave a homegirl mention to Julie McNiven. Thanks to Basketcase Nomie for finding this.
  • …And another homegirl article, this time about the Emmy winning title designer Cara McKenny.
  • The New York Post, in a witty complaint, says Mad Men has made watching TV screeners no fun; none of them measure up to the “literary” qualities of television’s best show. After about the halfway point, the article has minor spoilers for episodes 10 and 11.

Jane’s lobster look

September 05, 2008 By: Deborah Lipp Category: Vintage and Period

Joe Bua, a true TV Junkie, reminded me of something else I liked about Maidenform: Jane’s tanning crisis. This was funny, but also period-perfect.

Sunscreen, Joe says. Does anyone remember the kind of sunscreen you could get back when we had an ozone layer? I remember SPF factors ranging from 2 all the way up to 8. And also a profusion of tanning oils meant to deepen sun exposure. In fact, sometimes you skipped the lotions entirely and went straight for the baby oil. The idea of tanning was to sizzle a steak on your back.

Janie the Lobster Girl is very 1962.

HA! HA! HA!

Hilarious. This was sent to me from Joe Bua of I am a TV Junkie, who is my life partner (well, maybe in some other life). He keeps up with Mad Men and with us as well as anyone.

Just read it. It’s perfect as is. No need for me to chime in.

Well, okay. Except to say that I keep finding errors in all these articles. I left a comment on one of them. I can’t remember which ones say what, because there have been so many. One called Pete ‘Paul’ about sixteen times and, as funny as that is, especially for those that remember Sterling’s line in Red in the Face, this wasn’t meant to be funny; it was an article from a country who was just discovering the show and was only a review of the pilot. Another article said that the DVD release date was July 7th, when it’s the 1st. And that’s a big blunder.

I do remember Remember WENN, and most people don’t. It seems like AMC is starting a new chapter with Mad Men and Breaking Bad, so I never feel compelled to make that correction.

Point is, they clearly need the direction of the know-it-alls.

And that, my friends, concludes this week’s episode of No Need For Me to Chime In.
