Episode 7.03: Field Trip

 

Thursday, March 27, Friday, March 28, and Monday, March 31, 1969

Thursday, March 27
A movie theater
Don is at the movies during the day.

Don’s Upper East Side apartment
Don calls Dawn, asking for office supplies, but she’s now incredibly busy, managing traffic as well as personnel. She no longer has time to drop by or place his calls. She tells him Alan Silver, Megan’s agent, called, but won’t make the call for him.

Don calls Silver. He learns that Megan has been pursuing jobs too aggressively and desperately. Alan wants Don to get her to relax and feel confident.

SC&P
Peggy, Michael, and Stan discuss the Clios. Michael is nominated for Playtex, Peggy is not nominated for St. Joseph’s. They bicker and compete.

An airplane
Don is flying to Los Angeles. The stewardess knows him by name because he makes this trip so often.

SC&P
Peggy and Stan present an idea to Lou. After the meeting, Peggy learns that her St. Joseph’s ad wasn’t even considered for a Clio, Lou pulled it from consideration because the client is still upset about going over budget.

A luncheonette in Westchester
Betty and Francine catch up over lunch. Francine is now a travel agent, working three days a week. She has something to do now that her kids are older. Betty claims to be old-fashioned about mothers working.

SC&P
Harry gets pulled into a Koss meeting because the client saw an article in the New York Times about Grey’s having a computer. Harry counters that SC&P has a computer and is working on new, local demographics that will be more meaningful than Grey’s national demographics.

Megan’s L.A. house
Don is tidying up and arranging flowers he’s brought in a vase. Megan arrives with groceries, thrilled at the surprise. They immediately have sex on the couch.

The Francis home; Rye, NY
Betty arrives home. The housekeeper is helping Bobby with his homework while Bobby and Gene have lunch. Bobby has a permission slip for Betty to sign. Since they need chaperones, Betty agrees to accompany Bobby to a farm.

Megan’s L.A. house
Lying together in afterglow, Megan learns why Don has come. She’s outraged that Alan called Don and furious at Don’s deception. She knows Don hasn’t been at the office and isn’t there when he calls her. She thinks it’s a love affair.

Don tells her the truth about having been put on leave months ago. She kicks him out, telling him their marriage is over.

Friday, March 28
SC&P
Harry takes a call from the Wall Street Journal, then goes to speak to Jim. Jim called the Journal about SC&P’s computers, but they don’t actually have any. Jim didn’t realize Harry was lying to Koss.

Don’s Upper East Side apartment
Without having unpacked, Don calls Dave Wooster from Wells Rich Greene. They plan dinner at the Algonquin.

The Algonquin
Dave and another man have brought Don an offer letter. They are briefly interrupted by a young blonde named Emily Arnett, who boldly lets Don know where her room is.

Roger’s hotel
Don knocks on Roger’s door. They fight over letting Don go, interrupted by Roger’s hippie girlfriend, Sherry, showing up. Roger tells Don he can come back, to come into the office on Monday, and admits he misses Don.

Don’s apartment
Don calls Megan. She’s already crying when she picks up the phone. He apologizes, says he had an irrational logic that he now sees was wrong, and tells her he got his job back. He offers to come out for the weekend. She doesn’t want him to come yet. He says “I love you.” She doesn’t say it back.

Monday, March 31
Bus to the farm
Bobby recites his favorite monsters to Betty. He proudly tells his teacher they’re having a conversation.

Don’s apartment
Don stares straight ahead, apparently terrified looking at his watch. We intercut between Don walking down an SC&P hall with different names on office doors, to Don frozen at home.

SC&P
At the office, Don greets people one by one who are surprised to see him. He hugs Caroline. Roger isn’t in and it’s apparent he hasn’t told anyone that Don was expected.

Lou sees Don and has Shirley call Jim.

Michael calls Don into Creative, inviting his input on a new campaign. When he goes to get the storyboards from Peggy, she is horrified, leaving her office to stare at Don in the Creative lounge. Peggy, Meredith, Stan, and Michael all stare.

A farm
The kids are invited to see the cows in the barn. Betty chats with another mother while they smoke outside.

SC&P
While various people catch Don up on the goings-on in their lives, Joan goes straight to Bert with the news. Meanwhile, Lou pulls the entire crowd that has gathered around Don into his office.

A farm
Betty drinks milk from the cow.

SC&P
Don reads Time while he waits. Roger finally comes in after lunch, apparently drunk. Don demands that that Roger call a meeting, Roger tells him to wait.

A farm
Bobby sets up a picnic lunch, telling another boy that he can’t sit because it’s his mom’s place.

SC&P
Don eats a lunch that Dawn has brought him. Jim stops, surprised to see him, and Shirley grabs Jim and pulls him out by the arm.

Lou tells Jim he wants Don kicked out, he (Lou) has a two-year contract. He suggests they call security.

A farm
Bobby has traded away Betty’s sandwich for some gumdrops, saying he didn’t know she was going to eat. She’s coldly angry and insists he eats the candy, which he doesn’t want.

SC&P
In Bert’s office, they begin discussing Don. Both Roger and Bert understood Don to be on leave of absence, while Joan and Jim are adamant that he was fired. Jim uses the meeting to speak for a computer, which he considers more important than Creative.

Roger points out they would have to buy Don’s partnership, which would take years to recoup, and that firing Don would cancel his non-compete clause; they’d see him at meetings pitching against them.

The Francis home
At dinnertime, Betty is still angry at Bobby and complaining coldly that she’s no longer hungry. Betty leaves to bathe Gene. Henry tries talking to Bobby, who is sad.

SC&P
It’s evening and Don is still sitting waiting. Peggy comes in and coldly says she hasn’t missed him.

The Francis home
Henry comes upstairs. Bobby didn’t tell him what happened so he asks Betty, who says Bobby ruined the day and that her children don’t love her.

SC&P

Dawn summons Don into the conference room. He enters nervously while Lou watches from his office door.

Bert formally invites him back to work. The stipulations are many: No meeting with clients alone, no drinking except to entertain clients, no going off-script with clients, scripts must be approved, and Don will report to Lou. Violation means he will be fired and his partnership shares absorbed back into the company. Don says “Okay.”

The closing song plays: If 6 Was 9 by Jimi Hendrix.

  1. A minor point (one which Cutler may not have fully appreciated): Harry ‘clarified’ that while the firm does not own a computer, it DOES hire computer services to process that markering data.
