Episode 2.05: The New Girl
May 16–18, 1962 (Bobbie mentions that Kennedy’s birthday party, which was on May 19, 1962, is on Saturday, indicating it’s the same week.)
Wednesday, May 16
Manhattan: Office of Dr. Stone
Pete and Trudy meet with Dr. Stone about fertility issues.
Sterling Cooper
Freddy tells Don a lame joke when he hears the women of the office erupt in a joyful scream, and then Joan comes out of the break room flashing an engagement ring.
Office of Dr. Stone
The doctor privately asks Pete questions, including if he has ever fathered a child, and Pete says no. Then he asks if Pete wants a child. Pete does express misgivings, and then complains bitterly about his job, his in-laws, and the economy, and then says he tries not to think about his father’s death.
Sterling Cooper
At the office, Joan shows off her ring to all the girls, saying she’s planning a Christmas wedding but her fiancé doesn’t know yet, and indicates to one of the office girls that she’s not about to give away any Draper-related duties to her.
Bobbie Barrett phones. She wants Don to celebrate the success of Grin and Barrett with her at Sardi’s. Don says no, but in the next scene…
Sardi’s
Don joins Bobbie at her table. A short while later, Don and Rachel spot each other. Rachel says her name is now Mrs. Katz, and introduces her husband Tilden. Bobbie introduces herself and Don explains awkwardly that he works with “Mrs. Barrett’s” husband. The Katzes leave.
Don realizes that Bobbie really does do Jimmy’s business. They discuss negotiating, and Bobbie realizes that Don can’t even say what he likes, although Don says “The answer is huge.” She invites him to her place in Stony Brook to make love on the beach.
Long Island
Don and Bobbie drive out to the beach, drinking from a Jim Beam bottle. The Theme from a Summer Place plays. Don says he likes movies: She says she loves Spartacus, he mentions La Notte.
Bobbie starts kissing Don’s ear, he closes his eyes, and there’s a crash.
In the police station, we learn that they have told the cops Bobbie is Don’s wife, and that Don has failed the sobriety test. Don doesn’t have the $150 fine in cash. The cop won’t respond to a bribe and threatens Don with jail. He tells Don to call somebody.
Don flips through his book, thinks, and makes a call.
Some time later, Peggy arrives at the police station with $110. She sees Bobbie and looks away. Driving back, she asks Bobbie not to get sick in the car, which is her brother-in-law’s. Don asks if Bobbie can stay with Peggy so that Jimmy won’t see Bobbie with a shiner. Peggy points out that Mr. Draper needs to rent a car, she offers to take him to the airport. Bobbie says she doesn’t have any clothes and Peggy offers to pick up her dry cleaning. Then Bobbie passes out.
Thursday, May 17
The Draper home
It is now morning, around dawn. Don sneaks into the house, but Betty is away and angry. Don confesses he has high blood pressure and blames the accident on the medication. They argue, and Betty says her father has high blood pressure. Don promises to see the doctor on the way into the office.
Brooklyn: Peggy’s apartment
Bobbie phones Jimmy, saying she’s at a fat farm, overcome by self-consciousness. Peggy comes in with the dry cleaning and some food. Then Peggy wants to lay down, she’s been up all night. Bobbie glances at a magazine and they discuss Marilyn Monroe.
Sterling Cooper
Joan is showing the new girl, Jane Siegel, around. She refers to Jane as “a college girl.” They discuss Joan’s upcoming marriage.
Ken, Paul, and Harry come up to introduce themselves, flirting intensely. Then Don arrives with his arm in a sling. Ken says that Jimmy Barrett urgently wants to see Don, and Don says to put Jimmy off until Friday.
Peggy’s apartment
Peggy takes a call from Don. She’s in a different dress and appears refreshed. Don speaks to Bobbie and tells her about Jimmy’s call.
Bobbie and Peggy talk. They discuss Don. Peggy is tight-lipped, and we flash back to Peggy in the hospital…
December 1960, St. Mary’s Hospital
The doctor says Peggy has a psychoneurotic disorder, and that Peggy can’t make decisions for herself. We see Peggy’s mother and her very pregnant sister.
After they leave. the doctor speaks with Peggy alone. She knows where she is, the year, and the President, but not why she is there. The flashback ends…
Dr. Stone’s office
Pete is in the bathroom with a specimen jar. He flips through the porn there to facilitate giving a sample, and chooses an S&M magazine.
Sterling Cooper
Roger is playing with a paddle ball when Joan enters his office. Roger congratulates Joan on her engagement, and there’s an edge to their conversation. Joan indicates she was always faithful to whoever she was with (if that includes Roger, The Long Weekend suggested otherwise).
Roger is sad to lose Joan, even though Joan says she’s not quitting.
Friday, May 18
Peggy’s apartment
Peggy and Bobbie talk. Bobbie asks Peggy if she’s in love with Don, and Peggy says no.
Sterling Cooper
The men all hover near Jane, who is wearing a very low-cut blouse. Joan tells her to button up and buy a sweater.
Ken then comes and tries to impress Jane with his famous client (Jimmy), Jane acts unimpressed. Freddy comes out of his office and plays Mozart on his zipper. Jane nods and Ken walks away.
Peggy’s apartment
Bobbie puts makeup on her black eye. She gives Peggy some advice, and then leaves.
Pete and Trudy’s apartment
Pete comes home and complains about work. Trudy tells him his “sample was quite viable.” Pete is pleased and relieved. He doesn’t understand why Trudy is unhappy and she is angry that he is insensitive. They argue. Pete says he doesn’t really want children to disrupt their lives. Pete starts to storm out and Trudy apologizes and says she really wants a baby.
Peggy’s apartment
That night, Peggy makes up the couch and remembers the hospital…
December 1960, St. Mary’s Hospital
Peggy wakes up in her hospital bed to see that Don is in the visitor’s chair beside her. He explains how he tracked her down…
Sterling Cooper
Don, Pete and Sal meet about Clearasil. Peggy arrives. Peggy asks for more time to come up with something, but when challenged says she’ll have the copy first thing Monday. When the others leave, she asks for the $110 and Don looks chagrined. He gives her $60 and tells her that he’ll give her the rest tomorrow. She calls him “Don.”
As Peggy leaves, Jimmy and Bobbie arrive. Peggy doesn’t acknowledge Bobbie. Jimmy thanks Don for his help with Utz, shakes his hand and then leaves.
The Draper home
At home, Don arrives with dinner already in progress. Betty, drinking wine, puts a slice of meatloaf on Don’s plate. Don discovers there’s no salt for him, she is protecting his blood pressure.
