We see a memo from Lane Pryce, announcing a mandatory 9:15 am meeting. Pete, Paul, and Harry wonder what’s up. As Don walks in, Lane announces a visit from the Director and Chairman of the Board of Putnam, Powell, and Lowe. The visit begins on July 2 and goes into July 3, even though they were going to be closed. PPL, Lane says, was unaware of the holiday.
After the announcement, Bert and Roger call Don in. The secretaries discuss that this interferes with their going away party for Joan’s last day on Tuesday. Peggy didn’t know about the party. Hooker asks Harry and Pete to prepare presentations.
Cooper and Sterling tell Don they think that PPL is coming to see Don and probably promote him. Don is pleased. Cooper orders Don and Roger to “kiss and make up” and makes a barber appointment for the two of them together.
There’s a loud sound, at which Pete bursts out of his office, angry, to see Ken driving a John Deere tractor into the office, saying he landed the account.

She asks him what happened, and he tells her he didn’t get the chief resident position. The chief of surgery told Greg he’s no good and he’s devastated. He can’t stay in surgery and stay in New York. He tells her to get a job. She shuts the light with a look of despair.

Joan comes up and is introduced by Hooker to Guy McKendrick, Harold Ford and Saint John Powell. Hooker takes them on a tour of Sterling Cooper. Paul is ostentatiously playing guitar and singing in his office. Pete sucks up. Peggy comes out and McKendrick gives her the same compliment he gave Pete. Hooker brings them into Cooper’s office to meet Cooper, Sterling, and Don. Powell recites McKendrick’s many accomplishments, and then they all leave.
Hooker comes into Lane’s office and announces the visitors. They come in with a big box and Lane offers coffee and cake. Ford and Powell tell him they’re very impressed. They give him the box and tell him it’s his offer. It’s a cobra in a basket and it symbolizes that they’re sending him to Bombay. He’s taken aback and unhappy, but they give him no choice.
In the conference room, Ford turns on the projector light and introduces Guy, who announces that Lane is going to India. Guy shows an organizational chart that places Don under him (Guy). Don’s face falls. Roger Sterling’s been left off the chart entirely. Don sketches an American flag on his pad. Bert apologizes to Don for his “wild imagination.”

Betty sits Sally down for a talk. Betty gives Sally a present from baby Gene. Sally takes it with trepidation. It’s a Barbie. Betty says that Gene wants to be Sally’s friend, and that Sally is very important to her too. Sally takes the Barbie out of the box, puts it far from her and stares at it.

Sterling comes into Cooper’s office. Roger is upset by the slight on the chart and is pouty about his “name on the building’ and what he does “looking easy.”
At the party, Dale, Smitty and Kurt discuss Vietnam. Peggy and Joan are talking when they see the tractor has been fired up by Kurt. Lois gets behind the wheel. Peggy tells Joan she’s happy for her. Lois loses control of the tractor, and rides over Guy’s foot before she crashes through a wall.

Don tells Joan she’ll be “terribly missed.” She calls him “Don.” The Brits arrive. They say that Guy’s career is over and Lane will stay on while they “reevaluate.” Powell and Ford leave, Don and Joan share a moment and she kisses him on the cheek.
Joan leaves. Lane buys Don a soda. He expresses his unhappiness in literary terms.

Don arrives home and finds the Barbie in the bushes. He goes up to Sally’s room and puts it on her dresser. He’s in his room undressing when Sally starts screaming. He runs in, and the baby begins to cry. When Betty comes in with the baby she screams some more. Sally is clearly terrified of the baby. Don holds her and learns that Sally thinks the baby is Grandpa Gene’s ghost. He puts her to sleep.
In the bedroom Don and Betty argue over the baby’s name. Sally comes in and apologizes. Don takes her into the baby’s room. He brings Sally and the baby together in his lap, shows him to her, and holds them both.
Song to Woody plays over the credits.
