Episode 3.01: Out of Town

Approximately April 1963

Day 1 (It is nighttime, perhaps after midnight)
Ossining, NY: The Draper home
Don, barefoot, heats milk. He sees in memory Abigail Whitman weeping after having a stillborn daughter, and Archie Whitman saying she “killed another one.” Then we see Archie with a prostitute (credited as “Evangeline”), who consents to have sex without a “sheath.” Next we see the prostitute dying in childbirth. The milk boils over as Don remembers. We see the midwife bringing baby Dick to Abigail.

Don brings the hot milk to Betty, who is sizeably pregnant, cannot sleep, and is sure she has a girl. She says she has packed Don’s valise and that Sally damaged the clasp. Don uses guided imagery to put Betty to sleep.

Day 2
Sterling Cooper
Peggy cannot get the attention of her secretary, Lola. Outside her office, Lola is flirting with a Brit we will find out is John Hooker.

In Bert Cooper’s office, Lane Pryce (we will learn he is the new CFO) is fascinated by Bert’s erotic Japanese painting. Don arrives. They discuss Don’s trip to visit London Fog in Baltimore. Burt Peterson arrives; the meeting is to fire him as head of accounts. Roger walks in after Peterson’s already been fired. Peterson gets angry and storms out.

In a doorway, Harry complains about the tax rate to Paul when Peterson comes into the central office and makes a big scene.

Pete is called in to see Pryce while Peterson continues to rave. Joan confronts Hooker (who is Pryce’s assistant) about the way he handled Peterson, and Hooker complains that he wants to be called “Mr. Hooker” rather than “John.”

Pete enters Pryce’s office, nervous and kind of babbling. Pryce tells Pete he’s now head of accounts. Pete goes into his office and does a happy dance, then tells Trudy the good news and mentions that he forgot to ask what it pays.

Ken walks into Pryce’s office, extremely relaxed. Pryce makes Ken head of accounts. Ken asks what it pays.

An airplane
Don and Salvatore are flying to Baltimore. Don is flipping through a magazine, and is disgusted by an ad featuring a giant bottle of Fleischmann’s. The stewardness, Shelly, introduces herself; the men give false names. Shelly invites “Bill” (Don) and “Sam” to dinner at Haussner’s.

Sterling Cooper
Ken and Pete wait for the elevator, discuss Peterson and act magnanimous towards each other.

Baltimore
At Haussner’s, Shelly, Lorelei (another stewardess), a man who seems to be the pilot, Don, and Sal are enjoying dinner. Don implies they’re G-men working on the Hoffa case.

At the Belvedere Hotel, Shelly, Don, and Sal are in the elevator. A bellhop comes in, exchanges a brief glance with Sal, and gets off at the next floor. Sal makes a self-conscious remark. Sal gets off at his floor, and Don and Shelly go one floor up. Don slowly moves to get off; Shelly invites herself to join him. She takes his arm and stumbles, allowing him the opportunity to kiss her.

Sal collapses on his bed, then gets up to call the concierge because his air conditioning doesn’t work.

Meanwhile, Don and Shelly are making out. Don gets her to strip for him.

The bellhop from the elevator comes up to fix Sal’s air conditioning. As Sal pulls out his moneyclip, the bellhop approaches. They kiss. The bellhop quickly begins undressing them both, pushes Sal to the bed and gets into his shorts. The fire alarm goes off.

Don hustles Shelly out the window and down the fire escape. He knocks on Sal’s window and sees enough to widen his eyes. Outside the hotel, Don stares at Sal and the bellhop; then the bellhop starts to take charge and be official.

Day 3

Sterling Cooper
In the conference room, Joan reads off each head’s of accounts list of accounts; Pete sits frozen and angry; Ken looks delighted. After the meeting, Pete stops Ken; Ken is happy, Pete is furious and combative. Ken walks away, kind of baffled.

An airplane
Sal looks tense. Don leans in and asks Sal to be “completely honest,” Sal nervously agrees, and then Don presents “Limit your exposure” as a pitch.

Sterling Cooper
Joan takes Hooker aside and explains that she has setsaside a PPL visitor office. She suggests he occupy it, and also says he’ll get his own “girl” to avoid siphoning off typing from other people’s secretaries.

Trudy comes in to give Pete a congratulatory present. Pete is pouting and upset. He says he can’t live with the situation.

Sal, now back at the office, shows Paul and Harry the sketch of the London Fog “Limit your exposure” ad. They pump him for details, which he doesn’t provide.

Roger enters Don’s office with Stolichnaya and Cuban cigars from Greece. He pours drinks for them both. They discuss the Cosgrove/Campbell thing. Pete comes in to speak to Don, sees Roger, gets deflated, thanks them both for the promotion. Roger offers Pete a drink, but “not the Stoli.” Cooper comes in and tells Pete he needs a campaign for Penn Station. Pete self consciously calls Cooper “Bert.” Cooper asks for a drink, which shocks Roger.

In Hooker’s new office, Lane Pryce looks at the ant farm. Hooker takes credit for Joan’s idea but says nothing when Lane thinks it’s “hare-brained”

The Draper home
Bobby carries Don’s suitcase into the bedroom. Betty calls Sally in to apologize for breaking the suitcase, kicking Bobby out. Sally starts unpacking for Don and finds the wings. Sally wants Don to tell her about the day she was born. Don freezes and Betty takes over.
