Jesus Christ we’re still on Hershel’s farm? Well, yes, we are. And, even if there’s no geographic movement, there’s still movement in the character sense. People are having things happen to them, although some of it is still in the Final Destination-lite run of luck these people have. But there’s movement! Of story, if not [...]

Taking a life changes you. Agatha Christie once wrote, from the mouth of Hercule Poirot, that once someone had taken one life, it was much easier for them to take more lives. That however hard the first murder is, the second is always easier. We are wired not to be able to kill another human being. Break that wiring, so it goes, and the wiring stays broken.
This, then, is why Shane, dangerous even before, is more dangerous now. It’s not just that he’s unstable, lunatic, and unraveling. He’s all those things and has killed the living already. He can do it again. Continue reading »

Fundraising Seasons: The Walking Dead Season 1Dec 12, 2011 We’re having fun revisiting interesting things during our fundraiser, and our theme is “seasons,” so I thought you’d like a stagger-through of Season 1 of The Walking Dead (see what I did there?). It’s fun for me watching my son, Arthur, grow as a writer, he does all our TWD recaps. Episode 1.1 Days Gone [...] |

The Walking Dead—Episode 2.07: “Pretty Much Dead Already”Nov 30, 2011 Or as my mom and I came up with, Conversations with Dead People. (Alternate joke: The episode title is a reference to its pacing.) This, my friends, was the episode of conversations. And conversations. And conversations. And… Look, when you’re doing a show like this, people are going to want zombie action. That’s understandable. It’s [...] |
The Walking Dead—Episode 2.06: “Secrets”Nov 22, 2011 Boy, they weren’t kidding with that episode title, were they? This episode was the episode of secrets getting revealed or at least discussed. I wonder if I can even list all of them. Let’s list all of them. |
The Walking Dead—Episode 2.05: “Chupacabra”Nov 15, 2011 A chupacabra is a beast of folklore. Like the yeti or Loch Ness monster, it’s rumored to exist but no proof of its existence can be found. It’s mostly rumored to exist in the Americas, especially Spanish-speaking countries. As far as the scientific evidence goes, signs point to it being the result of coyotes badly [...] |
The Walking Dead—Episode 2.04: “Cherokee Rose”Nov 8, 2011 Dude, that episode was just bad. Just… bad. Look, I know I can’t expect weekly top-notch quality from this show, but this? The most memorable scenes from this show were thoroughly gratuitous. And the big walker scene was one big idiot plot. If you don’t know that term, it means a plot that relies on [...] |
Basket of News, Oct. 29 – Nov. 4, 2011Nov 4, 2011 James Bond 23 – now officially titled Skyfall – will face its greatest challenge in his spy career—be a worthy Oscar contender next year. Casting Albert Finney can’t hurt. Entertainment Weekly extracts from Matthew Weiner’s take on his renegotiations with AMC (and the alleged impact on other shows) from the interview with his sister, freelance [...] |
The Walking Dead—Episode 2.03: “Save the Last One for Me”Oct 31, 2011 Firing the entire writing staff seems to have been a good move for this show. The show is a lot better this season. Oh, sure, it isn’t cliché-free like Mad Men strives to be. This episode has both an incredibly predictable “Just in the nick of time” moment and a shirtless scene for the cast [...] |
