The season finale of The Killing had intense emotional highs and lows. It had a small number of scenes that didn’t work, a larger number that could be complained about for minor reasons, and a number of knock-out scenes. Orpheus Descending may not have been perfect television, but it had my heart pounding. SPOILERS AHEAD:
The Killing Finale Post May Be DelayedJun 18, 2011 Nobody panic. I am not going to be able to get the screener until Sunday and I may not be able to have a review written up in time for my usual 11:05pm post. You’ll get it ASAP, I promise. |

Critics Choice Television AwardsJun 13, 2011 So, the Critics Choice Awards have never done television before. And because it’s the Critics Choice, it’s all prestige television that critics really, really love. Which doesn’t stop people from bitching (“where’s Treme?”). Blah blah blah. We’re happy because Mad Men was nominated in every category for which it is eligible (rundown below the fold). [...] |
The Killing: Beau SoleilJun 12, 2011 I KNOW WHAT YOU DID. The Killing has thoroughly regained its stride. I wonder if it isn’t too late. There are structural flaws that this show needs to address. These flaws were apparent even in the excellent first few episodes: How do we make a murder mystery interesting for 13 hours? Once we saw a [...] |
The Killing: MissingJun 5, 2011 Day Eleven gave us a thoroughly satisfying hour of television. This is exactly the show I thought I was watching at the time of the pilot: Surprising, emotionally raw, visually stunning, and intricate. Now, you could argue that it’s another episode in which the investigation barely moved forward, but I’ve been saying for weeks that [...] |
The Killing: I’ll Let You Know When I Get ThereMay 31, 2011 “So, your mother is a different sort of person.” Lo and behold, there was an abundance of personality in tonight’s episode, and real forward movement towards an actual solution to the mystery of Who Killed Rosie Larsen? It’s an interesting dilemma; I liked this episode better than Arthur did (we watch together) but he now [...] |
The Killing–delayed postMay 29, 2011 Hey all. Normally, I receive screeners on Thursdays, and you have a shiny post about The Killing on Sundays right after it’s over. This week, I got on a plane Thursday afternoon, and came home Monday evening. So this week’s post is delayed. Please pretend I complained about the lack of character development and admired [...] |
The Killing: UndertowMay 22, 2011 The undertow is dragging characters under, pulling them along when they fight back. Once you give yourself over to the current, you can’t easily change your mind. This was another very fine episode of The Killing. It has not turned out to be the Next Great Show, but it’s very good, and even though the [...] |
The Killing: StonewalledMay 15, 2011 Wow. So here we are at episode 8, which is episode 107 in AMC’s screwy numbering scheme. If you recall, last week I was kind of meh on the episode, and the week before, I unequivocally disliked it, so we (Arthur and I) sat down to watch with some trepidation. And they knocked it out [...] |
The Killing: VengeanceMay 8, 2011 Everything is voyeuristic this episode, playing off witnesses and finding witnesses and the whole notion of spying. SPOILERS BELOW THE FOLD. |
This News is Killing MeMay 3, 2011 Turns out Eric Ladin (Jamie) and Billy Campbell (Darren Richmond) hang out. Mirielle Enos (Sarah Linden) will star opposite Brad Pitt in a forthcoming movie. Joel Kinnaman (Stephen Holder) has also gotten a high-profile movie role: Safe House, with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. The Atlantic asks if The Killing is still worth watching. Ratings, [...] |
The Killing: What You Have LeftMay 1, 2011 A lot of really interesting stuff happened with the murder mystery this week, stuff that engrosses me, but I can’t write about that yet. I am distracted by the STUPID. |
The Killing: Super 8Apr 24, 2011 Red herring…PSYCH! Red herring…PSYCH! That’s been the pattern on The Killing, and a number of people have expressed a little exhaustion with that pattern, and the sincere hope it doesn’t continue. Well, such fans were surely more satisfied with Super 8. |
