The latest Masters of Sex episode, Coats or Keys, is the best single episode this show has given us in ages, probably since season 1’s knock-it-out-of-the-park stunner Catherine., or season 2’s FightCoats or Keys may also be the first truly great Masters of Sex episode that is as funny as it is dramatically rich.

Nothing radical’s ever been catered.

“Key parties” have certainly been fodder for fiction before. I’m especially reminded of the film The Ice Storm. Ang Lee’s film and his all-star cast (Sigourney Weaver, Elijah Wood, Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Christina Ricci, Tobey Maguire) mined many of the same veins: Hypocrisy, fear, using swinging to prop up an unhappy marriage with a services as Zoom Escorts Stoke-on-Trent or similar. In some ways, though, Coats or Keys is better than the rather sloggy movie. For one, it’s funny. For another, it steps back and comments from the outside, by showing us “homos” and caterers and people who have no idea why they’re there.

I’m looking for a little moral support from the only other homo at this party.

Pleasure and pain. Punishment and danger. Episode 4.05 of Masters of Sex, The Pleasure Protocol, digs into some previously unexplored territory. It’s excellent material, and suitable not just to the show but to these characters, at this point in their lives. The juxtapositions all work, and this is something the series has sometimes struggled with. Self-punishment mixed with pleasure as a conversation that arises after an AA meeting? That makes sense. Working with sexually dysfunctional couples and uncovering hidden rage that is painful and triggering for Bill? Of course.

I’m going to say that it’s more than a little ridiculous to present us with Masters and Johnson’s very first woman interested in some fairly mild BDSM when they’ve been doing this for more than ten years. The shock and surprise that there’s such a thing as a woman who wants a little aggression? Seriously? Continue reading »

Masters of Sex: Inventory

Masters of Sex: Inventory

Sep 21, 2016

Masters of Sex S4 E2, Inventory, raises the question of how much tolerance we can have for a female anti-hero. Television loves its male anti-heroes, from Don Draper to Walter White, and Bill Masters—cold, adulterous, a shitty father and a worse husband—fits right in. But television is also virulently unforgiving of its female anti-heroes: Betty […]

Masters of Sex: Freefall (Season 4 Premiere)

Sep 12, 2016

Masters of Sex is going for the symbolic title in its season 4 premiere. Both Virginia Johnson and Bill Masters have lives in Freefall, and the extended metaphor is used twice. Once with meaningful music. If I sound like I didn’t like the episode, that’s not at all true. It wasn’t great. It was disjointed. […]

Masters of Sex: Party of Four and Full Ten Count

Sep 28, 2015

Throughout Full Ten Count, the season finale of Masters of Sex, there were masterful (see what I did there?) speeches. Excellent dialogue, excellent monologues, powerful moments. Stunning scene after stunning scene. The problem is, each of those scenes could serve as a denouement, each could have been the final scene of the season. Bill confessing […]

Masters of Sex: Through a Glass, Darkly

Sep 14, 2015

Another strong, if flawed, episode of Masters of Sex. Through a Glass, Darkly, has everything that makes Masters of Sex a great show, and also much of what makes the audience suffer with frustration about how much better it can be. Showtime doesn’t advertise this show right. AMC would be all, “Only two episodes left […]

Masters of Sex: High Anxiety

Sep 8, 2015

Before I start actually reviewing Masters of Sex Episode 3.09: High Anxiety, can we just look at this picture? What the hell is on the wall behind these ladies? The Bat Signal? Also, note the tragedy that is a St. Louis pizza box. I weep. High Anxiety was an action-packed episode. Of course, the Mel Brooks […]

Masters of Sex: Surrogates

Masters of Sex: Surrogates

Aug 31, 2015

It’s amazing how much of a 360 180 Masters of Sex can do. The difference between last week’s Monkey Business and this week’s Surrogates is a case in point, as the show has gone, in two weeks, from rock bottom to excellence. With Monkey Business, not only was it kind of weird and creepy, it was […]

Masters of Sex: Monkey Business

Aug 24, 2015

At the end of the Masters of Sex episode Monkey Business, I turned to Professor Spouse and said “What did that mean?” She didn’t know either. There were some great scenes, and I was interested in a lot of it, but nothing hung together for me, and the gorilla subplot in particular didn’t seem to […]

Masters of Sex: Two Scents

Masters of Sex: Two Scents

Aug 17, 2015

Masters of Sex episode 3.06, Two Scents, is all about subliminals. This feeds into an idea that I brought up in conversation recently, that Virginia Johnson may have purred “We killed Freud” in a recent episode, but this season has been all about Freud. The through-line for the season is how the sins of the […]

Masters of Sex: Matters of Gravity

Aug 11, 2015

Early in Masters of Sex episode 3.05, Matters of Gravity, Obnoxious Washington University Guy talked about his son needing to get his wife pregnant in order to be eligible for a draft deferment. At this point, I hit pause and Professor Spouse proceeded to research deferments during the Vietnam War. In 1965, as the war […]

Masters of Sex: The Excitement of Release, and Undue Influence

Aug 4, 2015

This week’s Masters of Sex recap combines the previous two episodes, as I’ve fallen behind. The Excitement of Release, from two Sundays ago, and Undue Influence, from this week, are two very different animals, and combine to highlight both the excellence and flaws of this series. In The Excitement of Release, Virginia and Betty pursue […]

Masters of Sex: Three’s a Crowd

Jul 20, 2015

Masters of Sex talks about penises and vaginas, about erectile dysfunction and about the clitoris. However, in Three’s a Crowd, we learn that this show, like apparently every other, is incapable of uttering the word “abortion”. “Are you okay with…?” “Of course.” Ugh. In a show that purports to be about honest communication about sexuality, […]
