Don’t forget you can enter to win a limited edition screen print. Walking Dead recap should be up this afternoon. Because this is a show we recap from live airings, TWD depends on Arthur’s work schedule, but you can count on recaps around noon Monday most weeks. Downton Abbey, another show we recap from live [...]
There’s a huge tree being carted in the back of a truck. Oh, the Crawleys have finally decided to do some landscaping! I am looking forward to some creative gardening, especially if they retained Edward Scissorhands’ services. Wouldn’t Downton be sooo much cooler if it were surrounded by shrubs in the form of elephants and swans? Oh, no, sorry, it’s Christmas. And while there will not be any Ghosts of Christmas Pasts, other otherworldly beings will be in attendance. Spooky, innit? On the other hand, what fun! Someone bring out the marshmallows, let’s make smores!
SPOILERS AFER THE CUT
Downton Abbey: Season 2, Episode 5 – Who Was That Masked Man?Feb 8, 2012 Mary wheels Matthew along the verdant grounds of the Downton estate. When he complains that he is strong enough to wheel himself, she responds: “I’ll be the judge of that!” Leave it to her to find a way to further castrate a man with erectile dysfunction. Yes, Mary’s in top form. SPOILERS AFTER THE CUT! |

Fan Art Thursday: Downton AbbeyFeb 2, 2012 The credit for this sweet bit of romance goes to queensammy of the Downton Abbey Appreciation Life Tumblr. |
Downton Abbey: Season 2, Episode 4 – Get Out Your Handkerchiefs!Feb 1, 2012 It’s Amiens, 1918 and we open on a shot of a couple of rats surveying a battlefield atop a shattered brick wall. Presumably the papa rat is saying, “One day, son, all this will be yours”, but my hearing sucks at the subsonic squeak range, so. SPOILERS AFTER THE CUT!! |
Downton Abbey: Season 2, Episode 3 – The Contrary ContrariansJan 25, 2012 It is 1918 and evidently everyone’s gotten into the swing of running a convalescent home, because there’s no more kvetching or eye-rolling coming from the Crawley gang. Lady Edith has found her stride. She’s putting on a concert and wants archenemy Mary to participate. This is a little like Michele Bachman and Obama doing a [...] |
Downton Abbey Love: Nostalgia for a Bygone Class System? Or Refuge from TMI?Jan 20, 2012 In today’s Slate, Katie Roiphe discusses the paradoxical popularity of Downton Abbey given the current economic meltdown and the subsequent discontent of the 99%: One might wonder why, at the precise moment that we are condemning class divides in this country, so many of us would develop a passion for a show like Downton Abbey; why suddenly [...] |
Downton Abbey: Season 2, Episode 2 – Who’s the boss?Jan 17, 2012 Mary and Matthew have run away for a romantic sojourn on the shores of the Bosphorus—oh, wait. That’s just a Viking River cruise commercial. Seriously, who wants to travel with Vikings? The pressure to rape and plunder must be overwhelming. SPOILERS AFTER THE CUT!! |
Downton Abbey Language DiscussionJan 12, 2012 The very serious (yet very enjoyable) linguistic blog The Language Log is discussing the Season 2 (or, as they say in the U.K., “Series 2″) episode, specifically, Thomas’s use of the phrase “Just saying.” Beginning with a letter from a reader: Has Language Log ever looked at the origins of “(I’m) just saying’” as a [...] |
Downton Abbey: Season 2, Episode 1 – This is War! (Full Recap)Jan 11, 2012 Laura Linney is all decked out in black lace in front of a red satin curtain. That’s because she’s celebrating — this time they’ve actually given her lines! Instead of channeling the ghost of Alec Guinness, though, and intoning sedately from a plush armchair, she moves all around the stage in way that makes me [...] |

Fan Art Thursday: Downton AbbeyJan 5, 2012 For a change of pace, and in eager anticipation of Downton Abbey’s U.S. Season 2 premiere on Sunday, January 8 (check local PBS listings), this week I’m featuring Downton Abbey fan art instead of our usual Mad Men. I found this on Deviant Art by NezumiPickle. |
Seasons of Fun: Downton AbbeyDec 13, 2011 Okay, so seasons. We’re mostly doing Mad Men, but other things too, during our not-really-annual-because-we-skipped-last-year fundraiser. Donate button is at the bottom! Your donations keep the doors open! Our own MarlyK is our Downton Abbey writer: Here’s a run-down of Season 1. In dignified BBC fashion, episodes aren’t named, but Marly took care of that! [...] |
