Continuing our visit to New York’s Central Park.
The Central Park Carousel is in the southern portion of the park, just south of the 65th Street Transverse. In Mad Men episode 7.03, Field Trip, Ken Cosgrove shows Don Draper pictures of his son Eddie that he took at the Central Park Carousel. Ken tells Don that the carousel reminds him of Don (because of The Carousel pitch in Season 1, although he doesn’t say so).
The most famous cultural reference to the Central Park Carousel is undoubtedly from Catcher in the Rye, when Holden Caulfield visits it with his sister.
Then the carousel started, and I watched her go round and round…All the kids tried to grap for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she’s fall off the goddam horse, but I didn’t say or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it is bad to say anything to them.
