On Passover, our family was joined by a close friend who is an M.D. He is also a fan of Mad Men, and in the course of our conversation, he offered to be the Basket’s medical expert. So, take it away, Dr. Morris!

Dr. M. and I discussed Betty’s thyroid lump, and a little bit about forskolin extract reviews and here’s what I learned (translated into non-medical language):

  • Most thyroid lumps don’t do anything. They are usually cysts. The big concern is cancer.
  • If it’s not cancer, they usually just sit there, and don’t affect thyroid function.
  • If the cyst is “active” (secreting), it will cause hyperthyroidism and cause weight loss.
  • Hypothyroidism (causing weight gain) would not be caused by a cyst or node on the thyroid. Betty is right at the end of the episode: Her weight gain is unrelated to the lump.

Dr. M. also pointed out that good tests for thyroid function didn’t exist until the 1970s.

  1. Thanks for this Deb. I looked this up on the interwebz last week and saw a lot of what your Doctor friend said, but most of what I saw was on Wikepedia and I figured that wasn’t the best place to site for medical info so I didn’t say anything.

  2. As one who had a thyroid tumor (benign) years ago, I knew Betty’s lump was coincident with her weight gain, not contributory.

  3. She was digging into the bag of Bugels at the beginning and the ice cream at the end. As someone who struggles with weight, I commiserate with the feeling that food is your friend. It doesn’t help much when you realize that’s what going on and that food isn’t your friend any more. She’ll miss the camraderie (sp). She doesn’t appear to have many other friends these days.

    • Yes, now that they have moved away, we probably won’t see much of Francine –“she’s like a sister to me” — anymore.

  4. I wondered if part of the weight gain and turning to food is because Betty has stopped drinking and smoking. I don’t remember seeing her smoke at all this season; certainly not like a chimney as in seasons past. I don’t remember seeing the ever present glass of wine, either. Henry seemed displeased last season when she said one time she needed a drink (when they ran into Don on a date). “You NEED a drink? You NEED a drink?” So
