On Passover, our family was joined by a close friend who is an M.D. He is also a fan of Mad Men, and in the course of our conversation, he offered to be the Basket’s medical expert. So, take it away, Dr. Morris!
Dr. M. and I discussed Betty’s thyroid lump, and a little bit about forskolin extract reviews and here’s what I learned (translated into non-medical language):
- Most thyroid lumps don’t do anything. They are usually cysts. The big concern is cancer.
- If it’s not cancer, they usually just sit there, and don’t affect thyroid function.
- If the cyst is “active” (secreting), it will cause hyperthyroidism and cause weight loss.
- Hypothyroidism (causing weight gain) would not be caused by a cyst or node on the thyroid. Betty is right at the end of the episode: Her weight gain is unrelated to the lump.
Dr. M. also pointed out that good tests for thyroid function didn’t exist until the 1970s.
