How lovely! My favorite food moment? There are so many, as I love to cook and bake and eat, but Don making hash in the middle of the night (and eating with Sally) is one of my favorite moments.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Mad men has so many great food moments. But something about the idea of chicken Kiev being so buttery you have to wear a bib is hysterical.
Pass the grilled cheese sandwiches so I can go to bed!
Grandpa Gene and Sally eating ice cream out of the carton before dinner.
Sal cooking pasta for Ken in “The Golden Violin.” Ken said he could smell “heaven in the street.”
I liked the food-related moment(s) in “Red in the Face”. First, Don invites Roger to dinner and Betty doesn’t have enough food for the three of them, then they all wind up drinking too much and Roger hits on Betty. Don’s revenge later in the episode (combining overindulgence of alcohol and raw oysters with a walk up twenty plus flights of stairs, leading to Roger vomiting in front of the Nixon people) was priceless.
I like the dinner scene from the “Jet Set” when everyone is enjoying the exotic delights of Mexican food (LOL) on the patio of that beautiful house! I would absolutely kill to dine in that outdoor setting.
I like when Don and Peggy go get food at the diner during “The Suitcase” and Don gets flatly suggests after eating: “Let’s go some place darker”.
I love so many of them but perversely, I have in mind Peggy & Don in the diner, too. And the map of the Acropolis. I’ll leave out the rest:)
Thanks for this giveaway!
“Red in the Face” is centered around eating (and drinking). Roger over indulges in both situations. In the end, he winds up spilling his oysters.
I’ve been watching MM with my 15-year-old son. Last night we were plowing through Season Three, Betty indisposed with new baby, Don in kitchen, Sally shows up to see her dad working up a bachelor meal (if I ever saw one) – hash in cast iron pan with an fried egg.
A very nice moment.
Favorite moment? Pete heaving Trudy’s turkey out the window. Honorable mention to Don and Sal in Baltimore having dinner with the two stewardesses – but there are SO many food related mentions (chip and dip, anyone?)
I love the montage shots of dining in ‘Red in the Face’ cocktails, oysters….
“I don’t like food that close to the bed…reminds me of a hospital..”
I kind of loved the scene in “Marriage of Figaro” where it’s Sally’s birthday and Betty asks Helen Bishop for her frozen Sara Lee cake after Don is a no-show with the nicer real one.
Definitely Roger and the oysters in “Red in the Face.” No matter how many times I have seen that episode I always forget that scene after they climb the stairs is coming. And it gets me every time. Very Roger Sterling. Same episode as the chip in dip which I still want!
Gotta love the season 4 finale, in the diner in California, when Don realized that Meghan Calvet does not cry over a spilled milkshake!
For sure!!! That is Bob’s Big Boy in Downey, California….love that place. I was so happy to see that they filmed so close to home!
Wish I was there.
I love potato chips so I’ll go with the Utz potato chip commercial episode.
FOOD! Right up my alley! (I’m a food blogger) There are so many great food related moments… it’s hard to choose. But I do love when Roger totally barfs up his oysters! Especially because you realize Don planned it.
I love the pineapple-upside-down cake, and the fascination with exotic (for them) cuisines. Reminds me of a fancy Hawaiian restaurant in our area back in the 60′s that was shaped like a giant pineapple. It was the height of chic to go there!
Definitely Betty coming home after her back-of-the-bar sex with the stranger and munching on some chicken alone in the light of the refrigerator.
I don’t know why (yes I do!) but it’s this: When Jimmy Barrett (the insult comic), having made up with the sponsor’s fat lady wife, does the commercial for Utz potato chips, and eats them like a chipmunk, perfectly willing to make a mess and a fool of himself for cold, hard cash. It fits his character, and the rapacious nature of advertising, and celebrity advertising, in general: Ieat this, I’m famous; you should eat them, too, and ergo, you’ll be famous.
Works (most) every time.
I think one of my favorite moments is when Don and Sal are having dinner with the airline pilot and stewardess and they are completely lying about what they do. They say they work for the government and have everyone at the table riveted with their story. The pilot eats his lobster and tries to scoff at their profession, if only he knew!
Loved it when Betty has to serve Roger at the last minute and only had enough food for two…”I am a vegetarian sometimes.” over her plate of iceburg lettuce!
oh god, anytime anyone eats a cocktail olive I get happy! and anytime betty cooks, that is also super!
I have to go with Peggy and Don at the Greek diner in The Suitcase. The whole episode is great, that scene in particular.
I love Betty’s “international dinner party”. I would kill to have a reason to host a dinner party in the first place and hers was hosted with style!
Betty coming home after her back-of-the-bar sex with the stranger and munching on some chicken alone in the light of the refrigerator.
Betty’s Around The World dinner. I hosted one with my supper club in her honor. Not nearly so many fireworks though. And I didn’t fall asleep in my party dress.
Peggy’s date with the truck driver! “So, you drive a truck?” To be fair, I think it was over before any food was consumed. I also second Pete throwing the chicken off the balcony.
My favorite food moment from Mad Men is watching Pete scarfing down an enormous bowl of cereal when Trudy was vacationing alone in the third season. He’s regressing big time, watching cartoons and giggling like a kid. It was sweet.
Loved It when Sally visited her Dad at his bachelor pad in the City and made him French Toast with Rum Syrup the next morning.
[...] Only one more week to win one of three copies of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook! [...]
I think I entered in the wrong place so I’m posting again here. I would love this book. My repertoire of 60s food is limited to Lipton French Onion Dip and fatty grilled burgers with Kraft American Cheese slices on top. I need help!
grandpa gene showing up with sandwiches from pat’s steaks sounded real good
Martinis and oysters!
I love Helen Bishop saving Sally’s birthday party in season 1 with a Sara Lee cake.
Definitely Pete heaving Trudy’s chicken (and serving platter!) over the balcony.
I love the scene where Betty slaps Helen Bishop in the grocery store. All of the produce looks so yummy and colorful!
Betty: I am a vegetarain sometimes.
I love the scene from season four when Don, Megan and the kids are in the California diner, and Bobby spills his drink. Everyone freezes because they’re used to Betty’s hysterics, but Megan simply cleans it up and everyone breathes a sigh of relief. That’s when I fell in love with Megan.
)
The episode where Don and Roger spend the lunch hour eating seafood and return to the office unaware the elevator is “broken.”
