November 1,2011.

I had a funny experience today.  While at a favorite antique shop today with my darling mother, I was taking in all the nostalgia around me when my eyes fell on a strangely familiar doll.  It had up-swept blond hair,  and a luxuriant, strapless pale blue brocade gown.

“That doll looks like Betty Draper!”

“Betty who?”

“You know, blond Betty, Don Draper’s wife on Mad Men?”

(I had to refresh her 91-year old memory.  She and I had watched the first and a bit of the second season of MM, but that was a while ago.)

“Oh, yeah!” she smiled, as images of blond Betty filtered into her mind.   I told her that the gown reminded me of one that Betty wears in an episode she hadn’t seen yet, and hoped to show her soon.

As we were talking, a woman who appeared to be in her early 70′s came bustling around the corner of another section, her eyes aglow.  “Who said Betty Draper?”

“I did.”   I introduced us and pointed out the doll,  and she loved it.  I asked her how long she’d been watching Mad Men.  She said since the beginning, and she enjoyed MM but in particular LOVES Jon Hamm!   We agreed on his timeless sex-appeal and had a nice chat about our favorite show.  I reminded her that Season 5 will begin on March 21st, and she said “I have to write that down!”  It was a joy to tête-à-tête  with a fellow Maddict!

As for the doll?  Well, see here how much it resembles Betty in all her iciness from “The Color Blue”

In the meantime, I have to dig out my S2 MM DVD’s so Mom and I can review — as she’s described it to me in the past: “It’s a good movie!”

  1. Ok, I’ve been behind on my MM news, but Season 5 premieres on March 21st… A WEDNESDAY NIGHT?!?!?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  2. When I first heard the news about it, that was the date I had read — I thought I read it on the AMC blog but I could be wrong! Sorry about the confusion! I guessing in a March of Sundays, it will be the 4th, 11th, 18th, or 25! I hope the lady from the store looks it up!

  3. The doll is amazing.
