  1. Hmmm, the ties are changing on the set, it seems. Much more use of color.

Curious: does anyone have any ideas what year Season Five is supposed to take place in?

  2. Greg H,

Dunno about the year, but someone as steeped in fashion as Janie Bryant could reverse-engineer the answer from the ties…

  3. Just a quick correction, Weeds in on Showtime, not HBO. I almost wish it was on HBO, they may have put it out of its misery before/soon after it took such a steep dive in quality.

  4. Wrong link for the “I Have Nothing to Say and I am Saying it” blog, it links to an RJD2/Spinner article, instead of this (which is the correct URL): http://sayingnothing.blogspot.com/2011/09/falling-man-music-in-mad-men-title.html

Thanks for including this article in the Mad News, btw.

  5. No wedding band on the lovely Don Draper’s finger in those pics… But would DD ever wear one anyways?

  6. Don didn’t wear a ring when he was married to Betty. Anyway, Don, Pete, and Roger are all rather conservative dressers over 30 whose style is not going to change radically over the course of the 60s. Probably they’ve had the same suits for the last 5 years and don’t see any need for new ones. And I wouldn’t expect long hair or sideburns or mustaches or anything like that on any of them, ever. Merely abandoning styling gel would be radical enough.

But it’s probably true that someone who’s a real ’60s fashion buff, who knows clothing from that period like car aficionados know what “year” a set of fins is on sight, could tell the exact year of the ties.

  7. Karl, what does “icymi” mean? Tks.

Love Pete’s tie, and how the color is picked up in the background.

  8. I did think of how he never wore a ring with Betty, but I would have thought that it would be different with Meghan. Just an observation.

  9. Loving Matt’s house, and the vintage stove, and bath. It reflects his down to earth personality.

  10. I just think Don is not a jewelry person. I could see him doing a two-ring ceremony with Megan, and then taking it off because it made his finger itch or some other flimsy reason and “forgetting” to put it back on.

And I could see Pete adopting somewhat hipper fashions at some point, or at least louder ties, maybe even a shirt that wasn’t white or blue. But the “suits” took quite a while to take to things like longer and looser hair, even the younger ones. They mostly made it through the 60s looking totally squaresville. Now, if we could see what the “creative” guys other than Don were wearing (like Stan?), that might tell us more about what year we’re in.

  11. Switching topics (as usual) to Pan Am:

    See the embedded video here:

    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2011/09/pan-am-what-critics-are-saying/

This is a 5 minute ABC news feature with set up, brief Ricci interview, and clip.

The writers seem to be unsure about the speech of (they have no “ear” for) the time.

In the clip Ricci gets a call from a Pan Am manager. She’s to inaugurate a new flight to London. He says:

“…. we can not let it fly without a person….”

    (person?)

    he finishes the call:

    “and sweetheart, wear the girdle”

So he calls her “sweetheart” after saying they need a “person”???

n the interview Ricci herself is unsure how to talk about the show referring to the stews as girls errr women uh….. and that the girdles are harder to take off than put on.

(really? Ladies, is (was) that true?)

Here’s hoping the show finds an authentic voice – but I’m not holding my breath.

  12. @12- he said “purser”, which is a chief flight attendant

  13. My guess for when the show picks up is summer-fall 1966. Their ties are still skinny, hair still short. By 67 and certainly by 68 even conservative businessmen had started to subtly change how they looked.

  14. You know who I could picture trying to “dress hip”? Harry. He’s already learned a mouthful of Yiddish slang to keep up with his West Coast showbiz peers, I could just imagine him coming home from the Coast with bellbottoms and a Nehru jacket. In fact, he’d probably wear them both at the same time, heeheehee.

  15. #13

    Purser!

    That’s better! Damn computer audio.
