I am in the process of installing the “Intense Debate” commenting system on the blog. While that is going on, old comments will temporarily disappear. They should all be back soon.

If there are any problems with the system once it’s in place, just let us know.

  1. I had to watch all of this season's episodes so far in one fell swoop, due to missing them all while traveling. Just one thing I would like to clear up in my mind. Does Pete know about Peggy having his child? For the life of me, I cannot remember. And is the baby (now toddler +?) still being cared for by Peggy's mother? Thanks.

    • Who is Anna Draper, and how does she know Don?

      • Sounds like you need a marathon of the earlier seasons. :)

Don Draper, as you probably know, is really named Dick Whitman and stole the real Don Draper's identity. Anna Draper was the real Don Draper's wife and found our Don masquerading as her husband. A friendship was forged.

  2. Yes, she told him at the end of season 2. He referred to it obliquely once in season 3, saying that her decisions affect him.

  3. And no, the baby is not now (and was not ever) cared for by Peggy's mother. She gave it up for adoption. The baby at Peggy's mother's house belongs to her sister.

    • Oh, LDS, good. Somehow I missed that part of the question. A lot of people assumed the baby seen with Peggy's sister and mother belonged to Peggy — it seemed to have been a red herring to mess with our minds. We see in flashback that Peggy's sister was heavily pregnant at the time Peggy gave birth and so it's assumed Peggy gave hers up for adoption.

  4. Just trying out the new system. I like that you can reply to specific comments. Will we have to put in our name & email every time? Anyway, I think it's good.

    • Yes this is cool, no more putting comment numbers in responses which I have forgotten to do in the past.

  5. Also… BOK: The Cure For The Common Blog.

  6. Glass Darkly: Gold is a brilliant Post!

while trying out the new commenting thingy i thought this is as good a place as any to ask if somebody could post a picture of the fur ad? i missed Betty's picture the first time through, and after i found out it was her it went by so quick i still missed it. after all, why wait for a man to post you a picture?

  7. Guys! I am trying to use this to make sure our new system isn't a problem. PLEASE don't use it to discuss the show. Geez Pete!

  8. I'm trying to figure this out. Test

  9. I've posted 2 "test" comments. But they've disappeared when I've gone and come back. What happened to them?

  10. Hey all–I've learned how to correct for some of this. Right under the post where it says "Comments" you can click to sort by "Last Activity".

  11. Is this where we should report problems or questions about this new system?

Anyway, I was reading comments on another post here and after one comment next to "reply" it said "two replies". I clicked on that and only 1 reply showed up. I clicked on another comment with supposedly two replies, but again, only one reply showed up.

  12. Now my comment is timing out when I try to post it.

Earlier, it wouldn't post at all.

This is response to my own post. I'm really hating this new app.

  13. Keep putting complaints here. We can uninstall if we choose to, but let's give it a shakedown first. (Anne, try breaking it into two. We've had intermittent server problems today; I don't think it's related to the comment system.)

There's help here: http://support.intensedebate.com/ and explanation of features here: http://intensedebate.com/features

Comment threading & the ability to sort comments is something I think Basketcases have wanted. You can also reply via email to people in comment threads, which is very slick.

However, the main reason for installing IntenseDebate is that it will make moderation easier. We have the ability to block and delete comments and commenters easily if there is a problem, and every user has the ability to report a problematic comment. Since moderation has become kind of a bear, I searched for tools that would make it easier.

If we end up hating ID, there is one other app that looks plausible, however, I want to give this a little more of a chance.

  14. Ugh.

    I get it… but Ugh.

But don't give that a lot of weight. I hate Disqus, too!

  15. I'm logging in as a Guest, because when I try to login under WordPress, it immediately directs me to login under Intensedebate. But when I try to login under Intensedebate using my WordPress i.d. (as asked) it doesn't recognize the password. What am I doing wrong?

    -Melville

    • Test post. Just trying to see how this works.

    • Mel, it only recognizes WordPress.com. Many people don't realize that is completely different from WordPress.org. The difference between WP.com and WP.org seems to be causing the majority of login problems at this time.

  16. Nice work upgrading, Deborah. Hang with it, gang.

  17. I did have to try three times to get a comment posted. I had just posted a very short comment on another thread; then I did a long one on the “Respect” thread, and WordPress told me I was commenting too fast and took the entire comment away.

The second time, I didn’t try to duplicate the long post (I was afraid if it went away again, I would be highly not pleased) and only typed a few lines. When I clicked on “Submit Comment,” the system closed out the website entirely. Needless to say, the comment did not make it into the system.

I went away and had a Healthy Choice Fudge Bar, then came back and tried the third time, and this time it worked.

So far, the whimsicality of the system seems to me to leave something to be desired.

  18. ANyone else having trouble subscribing to comments?

  19. It's not an improvement to lose the comment #'s. Indenting replies is good.

I thought the last system was fine – not broken, did not need fixing.

    • Jahn, unfortunately, the system was pretty much a mess as far as those of us running the blog are concerned. If we uninstall Intense Debate, I will install some other commenting solution. We are too big and too contentious for nanaging and moderating comments the old way. We need a system that does a better job of helping us to prevent some pretty nasty trolling that sometimes appears.

      • Well, of course you must make your routine duties easier – life is too too short, and the admin folks at BOK are far more valuable as critics than referees.

The link below is not a blog – more of a set of "bulletin boards" (they call them "forums") – which has been operating for 11 years. I offer it as a networking possibility – the webmaster might know something helpful. I like the "classic" presentation – which allows and displays deeply embedded threads.

You may reach the Audio Asylum webmaster using this form:

Best of Luck – and keep on keeping on!

      • "pretty nasty trolling"

        "too big and too contentious"

You are doing a good job (even if difficult) – the quality is top notch at BOK.

Audio Asylum has trolls – mostly trolls are hooted at – but sometimes the admin folks choose to delete posts – and occasionally suspend posting privileges. They seem like nice, reasonable guys, and may have some useful advice (11 years!)

  20. I'm a late adopter, so I'm sure I'll get used to the system, but I really don't like the "thumbs up/thumbs down" thing. Glad to have the "report" function, however.

  21. I still see the comment numbers. My comment above is #22.

  22. Well, in two days I have lost my handle and my desire to post. So that answers the question for me.

I think it's sad. Sad that we have to install a system to police a good blog against a few who want to turn it into something else: and that the system itself probably changes the nature of the conversation anyway (long comments out? thumbs-down icons? the name "IntenseDebate"?).

I don't like the extent of the loss. I feel bad.

  23. Curiouser and curiouser, said Alice. When I posted my comment about seeing the numbers, it was #25. Now it’s #31, though my original comment is still #22. I am bemused. Confused, too.

  24. I am able to log in via wordpress.com and edit my ID handle to match what I used for BoK (White T Jim B), replacing the default wordpress login I use for my blog.

Also obviously able to add spaces to it.

So far so good for me, Deb.

    • For now, I’ve uninstalled Intense Debate. I have another comment system that I want to try that may cause less agita.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
