Since we’ve been talking about clothes this week, I throw it open to the Basketcases. What’s your favorite Mad Men outfit? And what single article of clothing from Mad Men would you want to own (in your own size)?
37 Responses to “Oh, Janie Bryant, how we love you”
The article of clothing I would want to own is that white dress with the gold buttons and belt that Betty wore in The Inheritance and again in Souvenir. I love that dress.
Favorite outfit? What Betty wore to meet Henry in Seven Twenty Three. The floral dress, the lace gloves, the sunglasses. A close second would be her riding outfit.
My favorite outfits are Peggy's black and red party dress with the Peter Pan collar, and Trudy's blue dress (and dyed to match heels), meant for Margaret's wedding.
So hard to pick one! I love that tennis dress Betty wore to the county club. And Peggy's high waisted black/white plaid dress with the buttons down the side.
My favorites include Joan's black and red party dress (when she plays the accordion…oooh la la, indeed!); Betty's Heinniken party dress (but before she's worn it for two solid boozy days/nights); most anything that Bobbie Barrett wore (except her husband), but especially her hand-up-the-skirt green and gold number, or the drunken-car-crash gold work of fashion.
I guess I can't pick one. Um….I'll go with the Joan dress, just because who WOULDN'T want to be Joan for an evening??
Absolutley Betty's polka dot party dress – white chiffon or organza with big green and blue dots. When she sat on the bed and it fluffed around her, i fell in love.
Just one–can't be done. Maybe I can fudge a little and pick my faves from different categories–day wear, evening, leisure, resort wear–'cause you know for sure those uber-fashionistas of MM, Betty and Trudy, have stuff to pick from from every category. For daywear, my favorite Betty item is that white linen ensemble you see her wearing in the promo still for Season 3 when she's looking disconsolately into a jewelry store–correct me, someone if I'm wrong, but I don't think we ever see her wearing it in an episode, unless it's the same outfit of "The Inheritance" and "Souvenir." To my eye it seems a little different.
For evening, it would have to be the infamous electric blue evening dress Betty wore–and subsequently puked on–did the stains ever come out–when she learns about Don's affair with Bobbie. It's the epitome of elegance.
Trudy has so many great things from which to choose. Her taffeta and plaid party dress is something I could carry off, but the ensemble I really love, even though I don't have the right figure for it, is her capri pants and headscarf outfit she wore for her vacation. You could wear that outfit today, and it looks so modern and effortlessly chic.
I'm really interested in how our resident goddess Joan is going to make the change to the mod sixties–Trudy and Peggy's figures seem more able to adapt to the swingy, looser silhouettes of that era. No matter, in the end, Joan is Woman, but she's not going to be in her fashion element for awhile.
I really want Joan's coral colored sweater (from her second appearance in 'Ladies Room' with the v-neck that has a buckle closure across the front! I'd love it in 5 or 6 colors! Just love Joan's style! The purple dress with the fuchsia tie front and the magnificent red dress from 'Babylon' are iconic too.
If I had Peggy's figure I'd want the tight b/w checked dress too
I love Bobbie's Red coat with fur and tall hat when she first meets Don
I love Rachel's fuchsia suit with the funky ostrich plume hat when she negotiates with Don
And Betty's floaty, creamy dress from Season 2.1 (where she's coming down the hotel stairs. And the 'sad clown' dress that you've mentioned in #7 & #9!
Oh, man, so much to love!! Betty's riding clothes, Trudy's party dress (Paul's party), that gaudy green print thing that Rachel wore while having lunch with her sister, Bobbie Barret's white coat/hat/dress combo, Betty's Heineken party dress, Sally's plaid coat, Sally's bubble skirt with the riding boots, Betty's Italian wear, Joan's powder blue number, Joan's black out-on-the-town with Carol dress, Rachel's yellow linen number with the matching gloves and big chunky necklace, Don's sport jacket with the orange lining, Cooper's bow-ties and argyles, Don's Palm Springs wear, Don's Italian wear, Don's pink towel, Midge's man's shirt with leggings, Roy's linen shirt and pants and sandals, Salvator's coordinated vest and jacket combos, Betty's Henry Francis dress, Betty's Derby Day dress, Trudy's return from the beach look, Helen Bishop's party outfit, Glen Bishop's Pan Am bag, etc., etc. What's not to love, really? Okay, I take that back. I don't like any of Peggy's looks. And Smitty's jump suit? That's just unfortunate. And the fez dude with the Bermuda shorts? Ridiculous. LOL.
If I could OWN one look, though, it would have to be Rachel's Chanel suit from the pilot episode. Every woman needs one of those in her closet.
Favorites on the show – both on Joan. Her red white and blue with the squares at the waist, and the red and black mitre striped dress. I would love to have 2 of Mona's dresses – the black short sleeve fitted dress she wears to the office when Margaret is planning her wedding (with the fabulous chapeau and gloves), and the brown dress she's wearing when Margaret throws her pre-wedding tantrum. They're not flashy, but they're both timeless classics that you could wear once a week for the rest of your life.
Oops, I meant Kurt! Kurt's jumpsuit is tres lame. Another outfit I liked, but forgot to mention is Sheila's hounds tooth suit. And agree with Miss Dove about Mona's post-Roger wear. Would don either of those outfits in a minute.
I absolutely LOVED Mona's black dress and hat she wore in "Love Among the Ruins." It's like she finally broke free from the dowdiness of acting like the happy wife in a failed marriage. Mona flaunting it in that episode was awesome and showed Roger that she's not crying in some room while he's off with a young girl.
My favorites are mostly Betty's clothes, I think, either the fabulous blue dress #9 mentioned or the creamy dress she wore at the SC party where Don was honored.
As for having something for myself, it would have to be a Joan dress, maybe even the green one that got all bloodied (but before blood!)
Betty's dinner party/meltdown dress (white with the blue, green, and yellow dots). I fell in love with it at first sight, and it wore so well over that evening and the next day. Damn it, yes.
I also loved Betty's "seething" suit: the one she wore to unload at the shrink's office, in "The Wheel". She looked calm and in control, though she must have been anything but. Betty looks great in fitted clothes.
Third: Trudy's bright blue dress and shoes in "The Grown Ups". A nice show of costume in a key scene.
My favorite outfit, no contest, is Trudy's lovely party dress in Flight One. Purple velvet top, multi-colored plaid skirt. Gorgeous. The outfit I would totally rock, though, would sure be Joan's party dress in MOKH. Must. Have.
Deborah, I'm hoping that TLo will show more of that dress when they work on Betty's clothes. Did you write about watching some scenes being filmed and I missed it?
Definitely not official. Don’t look too closely at some of the, uh, “mosaics.” One good look at any of those, and you know for sure that it’s not “official.”
kdk, we visited the set last August, posted some pictures and wrote some things. We did sign a confidentiality agreement and were not able to secure permission from AMC to post in detail.
ahhhhhhhh Betty's Riding Clothes….Hands Down. So reminds me of my mother…..Let's face it, these are the best clothes on television or anywhere else as far as I am concerned.
Hands DOWN it would be Betty's Pucci (I THINK it was Pucci – if not, a fab copy) maxi jumpsuit that she's wearing in the kitchen while fixing breakfast for the kids right after she and Don got back from Italy.
I would say just about anything worn by Peggy, or Betty aside from the episodes when Peggy was pregnant. I love the clothes on this show. July is going to be great!
I loved Betty's evening dress in Season One that she wore out to dinner with Don, Mona, and Roger. It had a beautiful blue sash. I believe it was used to dress the Betty Draper Barbie Doll.
I also loved the blue and red neck scarf that Jane wore the day Joan fired her and the knight cufflinks that Rachel bought for Don.
Oh, and if I could steal one item from the wardrobe room, it might just have to be the hat Jane wore with her harlequin dress when she visited the office in "My Old Kentucky Home."
I'd definitely go for Betty's formalwear- the outfits in "The Color Blue" and "5G". The gowns, jewels, fur, gloves- wonderful. It seems that people just don't get to (or choose to) dress up like that anymore unless they're extremely wealthy. So I'd want the clothes and someplace to wear them to.
I think there are modern versions of the other clothing that I like, so no need to raid wardrobe.
Favorite outfit: Betty's riding clothing
Article of clothing: So hard! maybe a dress of Joan's the purple one the barbie wears.
Accessory: Joan's pen neckless
The article of clothing I would want to own is that white dress with the gold buttons and belt that Betty wore in The Inheritance and again in Souvenir. I love that dress.

I would love to own Betty's blue coat.
So hard to pick one! I love that tennis dress Betty wore to the county club. And Peggy's high waisted black/white plaid dress with the buttons down the side.
I would love to own Pete's steel blue suit. It's such a cool look.
Favorite Outfit?
what #2 bee said. Betty looks like a goddess in that outfit.
I also love that crazy cool dress Betty wears at the end of Souvenir.
Betty Betty Betty!!!

Absolutley Betty's polka dot party dress – white chiffon or organza with big green and blue dots. When she sat on the bed and it fluffed around her, i fell in love.
I agree…the polka dot dress Betty abused by wearing it day and night is my favorite!
I actually bought a pair of shorts with an old-fashioned flower pattern similar to those she wore in one episode (can't remember which one…anyone?).
Just one–can't be done. Heck, I want half the wardrobe on this show!

#16 Deb–Great minds think alike.:) But, really, it's impossible to pick just one! I wish I could have Janie Bryant for my personal stylist. Sigh.
#7, I'm with you.
Betty's dinner party/meltdown dress (white with the blue, green, and yellow dots). I fell in love with it at first sight, and it wore so well over that evening and the next day. Damn it, yes.

Third: Trudy's bright blue dress and shoes in "The Grown Ups". A nice show of costume in a key scene.
I guess I'm pretty girly at heart.
Hands down, the floral dress Betty wore when she had her secret rendez-vous with Henry. My favorite and the one I would LOVE to own!
(A close second is Rachel Menken’s khaki dress with black piping that she paired with the chunky necklace.)
My favorite outfit, no contest, is Trudy's lovely party dress in Flight One. Purple velvet top, multi-colored plaid skirt. Gorgeous. The outfit I would totally rock, though, would sure be Joan's party dress in MOKH. Must. Have.
Oh my, look at what they've done to the MAD MEN logo for season 4…
http://www.adultmosaic.com/files/51/02/510232efa7…
Anything Joan wore — but especially the dress she was wearing when playing the accordion.
#18, that’s what January Jones was wearing in one of the scenes we saw filmed. It’s actually a very pale blue and green.
The La Vie en Rose dress that Joan wore to play the accordion, followed by the infamous Basket of Kisses dress.
I loved a lot of Bobbie Barrett's wardrobe because it fit her so perfectly. And I have a soft spot for Jane's Dior muffin hat.
#21 that's not for Season 4, that's someone having fun with a mosaic toy; not official.
Deborah, I'm hoping that TLo will show more of that dress when they work on Betty's clothes. Did you write about watching some scenes being filmed and I missed it?
Definitely not official. Don’t look too closely at some of the, uh, “mosaics.” One good look at any of those, and you know for sure that it’s not “official.”

ahhhhhhhh Betty's Riding Clothes….Hands Down. So reminds me of my mother…..Let's face it, these are the best clothes on television or anywhere else as far as I am concerned.
I would love to have the blue cocktail dress that Betty wore to Jimmy's party where he clues Betty into the affair with Bobbie. (Pre-vomit of course)
I would love to borrow anything from Betty or Rachel Menken's closets!
Hands DOWN it would be Betty's Pucci (I THINK it was Pucci – if not, a fab copy) maxi jumpsuit that she's wearing in the kitchen while fixing breakfast for the kids right after she and Don got back from Italy.
Forgot about that Pucci! I want a copy of that!
Trudy's Derby Day dress and hat! Or maybe Betty's pink Lutece gown, or turquoise Stork Club gown?
Oh, and if I could steal one item from the wardrobe room, it might just have to be the hat Jane wore with her harlequin dress when she visited the office in "My Old Kentucky Home."
I would kill for Trudy's blue mohair sweater in 'The Grownups." Or her red hat and red/gray plaid coat in "Shut the Door, Have a Seat."
