No, I don’t know where all our stuff is. Our settings. Our customizations. Our posts. It’s one a.m. and it took me all night to get this far. It’s a long and stupid story and I won’t bore you.
I have data on my hard drive, last backed up July 2009. After that, we were backing up to the server instead, on the strong advice of our web host. Of course, that server had both our primary data and our backup, which I only found out when it was too late. Still not sure how that constitutes a “backup.” Whatever.
So here’s the story. With an adequate amount of sleep, and a few hours, I’m pretty sure I can put everything back together more or less the way it was nine months ago. But not now.
Now you may consider this an open thread to vent your little heads off about what evil meanies we were to keep you away from your beloved Basket. We missed you SO MUCH.

As I understand it, your previous web hoster went bust – is that correct? That's not the same thing as his server being wiped out. The data probably all still exists, it's just that you can't get at it. No? At some point the financial situation will be resolved and someone, somewhere will own the server. Don't you think you'll be able to get the data transferred then?

Welcome back! Hope you'll be able to restore all data. May be you can use Google cache? One just needs to search by post title in Google and click on "Cached" instead of the link.

Olga: If I can't get the 2009 data from my hard drive (I think it's a problem understanding the WordPress database structure and an expert could help me), then archive.org has data back to 2008. And yes, Google cache is an option, but with so many, many posts, we'll need an army of volunteers to find them all.

My work website went down in a similarly spectacular fashion last summer, and it was a lot of work by a lot of people scrambling to put it back together. This is a wonderful place, but it's just for fun. Please take your time and don't worry about us. We, and our discussions, will still be here.
And if you seriously want volunteers, please ask. I'm sure a few of us would be willing to spend an hour or three scouring Google for the good of the Basket.
