Mad News, January 10-19, 2010
A note about Mad News: We are now so far behind that we are publishing an incomplete edition and starting another right away. News! Phew! As ever, Mad News is compiled by Deborah and Karl.
Janie Bryant is writing a book! I can’t stand it, it’s too wonderful!
On the Guardian’s Top TV Dramas of all time, Mad Men makes #4. Impressive!
Jim MacLeod has created an awesome Mad Men poster that is now my wallpaper.
The Times of London interviews John Slattery. He’s charming. Who knew?
The NY Times heat map of Netflix rentals has been making the rounds all over the blogosphere, for various reasons. Our reason (as Basketcase SmilerG pointed out) is that it shows Mad Men rentals.
Rich Sommer and Bryan Batt weigh in on Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno.
Rich Sommer will be guesting on Ugly Betty in March as a fireman who asks Betty out.
Bryan Batt has designed a $15,000 retro loveseat called “The Hef,” which is autographed by Hugh Hefner and debuts next month to mark this year’s 50th anniversary of the Playboy Clubs.
Psychology Today has an article on Vance Packard’s 1957 exposé, The Hidden Persuaders — and the Draper-esque James Vicary.
Christina Hendricks will auction her SAG Awards dress to benefit the ‘Clothes Off Our Back’ charity. And we can vote for the sexy red dress Hendricks will wear; with every vote a $1 donation will be made to ‘Clothes Off Our Back.’
Christina Hendricks also got a meaty profile from the Times of London.
Matt Weiner headlined “An Evening with a Mad Man,” in celebration of the American Advertising Federation’s Fort Worth chapter’s 100th anniversary. Mike Orren dug it; Christopher Kelly did not (though he is not a fan of the show, either).
Gawker describes Boardwalk Empire — HBO’s upcoming bootleggers-in-Atlantic City drama created by Sopranos writer Terrence Winter — as “a 1920′s Mad Men with Guns.”
The Wall Steet Journal covers the latest from RJD2, whose “A Beautiful Mine” became the theme to Mad Men. He’s been streaming the album on MySpace.
Alison Brie talks Community (and a little Mad Men) with BuzzSugar. And she’s quoted by the Boston Globe in apiece about Community’s off-screen friendships.
WBUR reports that when it comes to diversity, Madison Avenue has not changed much since the days of Sterling-Cooper.
The Age covers “Men Behaving Badly” on TV.
Here’s some backstage at the Golden Globes YouTube fun.

Another timely news item: Jon is one of the presenters for Friday's Haiti benefit telethon this week. Nice. Count me in.

Not sure if this was noted elsewhere but I viewed Tom Fords directing debut
A Single Man. Beautifully shot & designed; no doubt MM's Amy wells was the set decorator.
Jon Hamm lends his smooth as silk voice in an uncredited voice cameo.
A very Mad style altogether.

I spent so much time trying to decide which dress to vote for, I worry about what Christina will wear on the red carpet more than I worry about my retirement savings.

Just wanted to give the Basketcases a heads up – Melinda Paige Hamilton (Anna Draper) has been in the last two episodes of Big Love, and I think she's going to be around most of the season.
It took me until tonight to recognize her, as she plays a character with some sort of disease and is wearing an ill-fitting black wig.
