Mad News, November 8-10, 2009
The NY Daily News writes about Jon Hamm and quotes the one & only Roberta Lipp.
Matt Weiner talked to the Daily Beast about the Season Three finale. (h/t Andy Levy)
Just before that, he spoke with Los Angeles Magazine. There are written excerpts, plus a link to a 25 minute video of the whole thing.
And if that’s still not enough Weiner, here’s Lateline (Australian TV).
Matt is also making a movie.
The Daily Bastardette loves Mad Men (and the Basket).
January Jones comes to New York to do SNL.
If Magazine interviews the Slattery-Balsams.
John Slattery does a Q&A with Vanity Fair:
Because of your white hair, people usually assume that you’re much older than you actually are. Do you prefer being described as a “Silver Fox” or a “Mougar”?
What’s a Mougar?
It’s shorthand for “male cougar”.
(Laughs.) Well then a Mougar, definitely. Because a Mougar is just such a ridiculous and silly thing to be called. I hate Silver Fox. I absolutely hate it. It just sounds so… (he shudders)… so slimy and embarrassing. But a Mougar, well, that’s confusing and stupid, so I like that much better.
Janie Bryant tells Esquire her secrets to finding the best vintage clothes, then wearing them with a modern elegance… and it’s a slideshow. Same deal with TV Guide, except it’s the Mad Men closet.
GQ, however, is only partially about the fashion in “Mad Men Gets Madder.”
Defamer lays odds on who returns for Season Four.
Jon Hamm’s high school football picture. (I don’t know if we have seen it before but if so, I’m guessing few would mind seeing it again. -K.)
Unlikely Words compiles “Everything Don Draper said in Season 3.”
National Review has a (mostly) apolitical look at the final episodes of Season Three.
Alarming News writes In Defense of Betty Draper.
It seems that real-life ad agencies are affected by Mad Men, in that their clients are now expecting Don Draper.
Meanwhile, the Examiner wonders if Don Draper would like today’s advertising world.
Why is Mad Men the best show on television (a list).
A Mad Men blog writes in characters’ voices about the decision not to pre-screen the finale.
The S3 finale had great ratings, but not as great as the Kardashian wedding (there was a wedding?).
Mo Ryan interviews Chelcie Ross (Connie Hilton).
At the Vulture, two TV bloggers get conversational about the finale. Fun!
Lionsgate turned a profit with the help of Mad Men.
NOLA.com wonders about Sal’s future, and consolidates some media speculation.
Danny Miller is obsessed with Mad Men (despite believing there have been four seasons) and reminisces about the 1960s television of his childhood.
Although Mad News does not link many episode recaps, the New York Times finale recap mashes together two frequent subjects here at the Basket:
Many of us have been wondering if Suzanne Farrell was going to turn out to be a nut job, but clearly that distinction goes to Henry, who seems to have no good reason at all for offering to support Betty and her three children. They have spent all of 13 minutes together, but he is ready to refashion his entire life in deference to his objectification of her. It is hard to believe that someone who has been presented as a generally mature and rational man would rush into something so potentially disastrous. How long are we giving this relationship? (Or more to the point: how long before Sally short-sheets Henry’s bed?)
Newsday lists “Mad Men plots we’d like to see.”
Here’s an article about the AV system used in Times Square for the S3 premier.
Americans watch more TV than we used to.
Backstage interviews Vincent Kartheiser.

Totally totally off topic, and I fear my question may have been addressed eons ago…but as a voracious collector of Dyna Moe’s posters last season, I am struck by a difference in caricature this season. Was there a legal issue? Something’s way different (brilliant that she is) but, in case I missed something, can you dear Lipp sisters fill me in? I collect everything that Dyna Moe creates!!

Wow, those are a LOT of paparazzi pictures of January going through airport security. Can’t wait to see her on SNL.

John Slattery was really well cast as Roger Sterling, wasn’t he? What a funny answer.

Not sure if I missed you guys posting it, but there’s a very interesting critique of Mad Men in the Atlantic this month. The article is called “The Devil’s in the Details.”

Read Mo Ryan’s interview w Chelcie Ross, and he is a really interesting guy. Loved his insights on how he prepared to play Hilton, and his impressions of the MM set.

or Sketch if you prefer!!!?

Laura Lynn- I just bought a Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce t-shirt at http://www.spreadshirt.com. It is too cute! I got the navy tiny tee. I hope that helps!
Also, did anyone else dress up as “Mad Men” for halloween? I threw a huge halloween party at my house just so my husband and I could go as the Drapers. It would be fun to see photos of anyone else that did.

Sorry, John Slattery is a Silver Fox no matter what he says.

Regarding the first commenter, if the artwork looks different this season it’s just a factor of evolution of style or more/less time spent on each one. There was no one telling me to change anything.
Unrelated to me – the reference for “&” shirt: It’s a parody of an original design by Experimental Jetset done 2001.

Fresh from Whedonesque, where everybody is cursing the sudden but inevitable betrayal of the Dollhouse cancellation (but with a promise that all 13 shows of the season will be shot & aired). News of a new project for Vincent Kartheiser:
Money, a BBC Drama Production two-part adaptation of Martin Amis’ darkly comedic tale of excess, greed and flawed ambition set at the beginnings of Eighties capitalism…..
Navigating larger-than-life characters including uber-slick film producer Fielding Goodney (Kartheiser)….
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2009/11_november/11/money.shtml
Now I’m wondering if any of the fine Dollhouse cast might show up on the next season of Mad Men.

#14 Please, god, no Whedon “actors” on MM.
November 11th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Vincent (Angel) & Christina (Firefly) are Whedon Actors.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
I know, but Whedon has a way of latching onto certain actors, who shall remain nameless, who aren’t all that good. I was referring to them.

Project Rungay reviewed the latest episode of V. Beginning with much squeeing about the scene where Mona Baccarin (one of those Whedon actors) tried on various fabulous outfits in a virtual mirror. http://projectrungay.blogspot.com/2009/11/v-s1e02-there-is-no-normal-anymore.html
Relevant here? They added: “If it were up to us, Mad Men would be 40 minutes of Joan, Betty, and Trudy modeling clothes.”
November 12th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
not_B, Rungay does a weekly Mad Men recap, so I’m not surprised.
November 12th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
John Slattery performed here on stage a few summers back – I chatted with him VERY briefly before one show, and after another – he and Sam Waterston did “A Long Day’s Journey Into Night”…Terrific stage presence (both of them)… We joked a little about both of us being prematurely ’silver’ (I’ve got about 5 years on him), and we both attribute it to the Irish sides of our heritage… I have his autograph hanging here on the wall above my computer monitor.
I wish I had the opportunity to chat more with him, but I didn’t want to take up any more of his ‘private time’ than I already had.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Deborah: Yup, I was checking for new comments on Rungay’s MM recap when I found the bit on V.
Judy S: Much Irish blood in my background, too. At a wedding reception, a speaker remarked that, in our family, the men all get white hair quite early. The women all get different colors of hair!

Last night, I tuned in to watch the 1992 Michael Douglas/Sharon Stone erotic thriller, “Basic Instinct” and who did I see playing a police captain – but a much younger looking Chelcie Ross. I didn’t even realize who it was until I heard his voice.
