I am always happy to give Arlo Weiner (son of Matt) space in the Basket. The young fashion maven is featured today in GQ, and we’ve got the scoop right here. (All images courtesy of GQ.)

Here’s Arlo with brother Marten (known to Basketcases as Glen Bishop).

It was hot that day but I thought the jacket was important because it’s the only solid and it brought it all together.

police hat velvet jacket

This outfit is beyond words. Police hat! Velvet! I am dying of happiness. I think Tim Gunn just fainted.

The tie looks sort of like a Dracula tie or something. I always wear a tie to school. I started doing that in first grade.

  1. He is hilarious and incredibly creative. Can't help but look at the one in the top hat and hear "Where is Love?"

  2. LOL, Aran. I was thinking "please sir, I want some more." That…and "I got, you got, everybody we got…someone who cares!" (Jack Wild, aka the Artful Dodger, in H. R. Puff N Stuff)

Love Arlo's style. He such a risk taker, but it really works for him. I don't know that many adults could pull off the kinds of stuff he does, but they could certainly learn from him. He gives great fashion advice: color is good; mixing patterns and textures is okay; it's all about layering and contrast and making entire outfits, rather than just throwing on tops and bottoms without thought to completing the look. That's true for everyone. Men or women, young and old.

  3. The whole Glenn-Betty thingie still creeps me out. Even little Marten Weiner (& I didn't know until recently it was Matt's son playing the part) freaked me out.

  4. After seeing those photos, I am convinced that Arlo is really Johnny Depp's love child ;-)

  5. I'm glad I'm not the only one creeped out by Glen-Betty. Someone tell me what that was about – perhaps it was discussed at the time.

I'm also creeped out by GQ interviewing a child.

  6. This is one confident kid, because you know he gets the crap beat out of him in school.

  7. The Glenn-Betty thing creeped me out, too, especially that Marten is Matt's son. Betty's reaction to Glenn just didn't seem like someone anyone would actually do, more like a tv writer trying too hard to be "edgy." The acting was great, tho, as usual.

  8. Great8: Given who his father is, I doubt anyone beats up Arlo.

  9. #8 I doubt any kids have heard of Weiner, actually.

  10. Yeah, finding out he was Matt's son somehow didn't make it better for me. In fact, I found it creepier.

I can honestly say it's the only story line in the whole series what's made me say "WTF??!!"

And knowing that little Arlo is in GQ acting like… I don't know what exactly…

Well, I just don't know what to say.

    Not 'mah thang' I guess.

    To each his own.

  11. You know what ? I'm going to take it all back and try not to feel so judgmental. I was at a family party this weekend (Thurston's uncle's 90th BD surprise party) and I met the son of Thurston's cousin who was CLEARLY very bright, and CLEARLY completely out of the mainstream of his Bronx-Brooklyn pumpin'-iron-steroids-at-the-gym upbringing, a kid who loves math and science and computers and was so CLEARLY gay at his young tender age of 9 that my heart went out to him. My parting words to him were "you can be whatever you want to be, ya know. Just work hard in school and don't take no from anyone;" and to his parents I said "you have a very bright boy – encourage him in anything he wants to do," to which the dad responded "He should be be more involved in sports."

Christ almighty. How do kids survive?

    Do whatever Arlo.

  12. Uh, hello? Funky, bohemian private school in Los Angeles. With the children of famous actors, producers, athletes, musicians, etc. Given who his classmates are, I'm sure he's not the only kid dressed in a unique way. Besides, Arlo is now a mini celebrity in his own right, having been profiled in a number of media outlets, and even given the famous Dyna Moe treatment. Believe me, in L.A., that counts for something. I'm sure he does just fine in school.

  13. Yeah, I gotta agree with Hullaballoo. I live in SF and my daughter attends a funky bohemian private school and the kids there wear outfits you wouldn't believe. Arlo would stand out in a good way. I wonder if he wears the top hat to school. I think Arlo has great style, love him, wish he had a blog with a daily snap.

  14. I cannot believe how hateful the people commenting on the story on GQs own page are being! Not one nice thing in the 5 comments that popped up at the bottom. And most of them swipes at MW and the show. Grow up you GQ posters, he's 8 and half!

  15. We know he goes to a funky, bohemian private school? I must have missed that somewhere. All I know is, from my experience, kids can be cruel. I admire this one for being himself, but most 8 1/2 year olds I know are all about conformity, and anyone who steps outside the box is ridiculed.

  16. I believe they mentioned his school in one of the many articles about him. Besides, if he was getting harassed on a daily basis, I seriously doubt he'd still be dressing this way. He's been doing this since he was 3 years old, so somewhere along the way, he accepted or transcended whatever fate had in store for him because of it. He speaks confidently and with passion about his style, and seems to really enjoy fashion, and even has a sense of humor about it all. If he were getting bullied or beat-up as a result of this, it certainly is hard to tell based on his demeanor. He knows what he likes, and has the confidence to pull it off. Good on him.

  17. I've never seen any other articles about Arlo, so this is the first I've heard of him. I guess I mostly pay attention to articles about the show, not Matt's family members, as interesting as they appear to be! Anyway, good for Arlo for being himself, and I hope he's treated well by his peers. I have my doubts, but if he's going to dress like that for the rest of his life, he needs to develop a thick skin anyway. ;-)

  18. OMGosh, I think he's absolutely adorable. "I thought the jacket was important because it’s the only solid and it brought it all together." I'm dying over here!

I used to subscribe to GQ but stopped when it became more about half-dressed women (have to keep up with the Maxims of the world!) than about men's fashion. I'd much rather see any well-dressed guy of any age in its pages than naked women.
