It would be like Pete coming to work as Son of Dracula or something. Also, did we know that Susie Essman is a fan?

October 27, 2009 By: Ms. Darkly Category: Actors & Crew, Characters, TV-Film-Culture

There were many appreciative chuckles among Whedon fans last night as the character of Richard Castle on, um, Castle dressed up as a “Space Cowboy.”  In point of fact, he was dressed as Captain Mal Reynolds from Firefly, and both Castle and Reynolds are or were played by the lovely Nathan Fillion. This is the kinda stuff that geeks enjoy. Needless to say, I loved it, especially when the episode turned out to be about vampires, and Buffy was mentioned! (One of Castle’s ex-wives is played by Darby Stanchfield, Mad Men’s Helen Bishop.) The episode can be viewed here.

My friend suggested this is akin to Pete Campbell showing up to a Halloween party as Son of Dracula, referring to Vincent Kartheiser’s turn as Angel’s son in, er, Angel. Which made us wonder what other costumes might end up at that bash. Anachronisms be damned!

A few suggestions:

Don Draper could be a handsome, but bumbling doctor who can’t play tennis and gets his mail stolen. Okay, perhaps not.

Our Lovely Joanie was on both Angel and Firefly. One as a barmaid and one wearing essentially a gunny sack — she filled out both equally well.

Bert Cooper could be the Rudy Vallee character in How To Succeed in Business, although he still has the cool, clear eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth.

Care to play along?

***

I was reading Susie Essman’s book last night — she played Susie Green on Curb Your Enthusiam when I read she loved Mad Men, but that her husband hates that she loves it, because she becomes obsessed with the idea he’s cheating on her since, in the world of Mad Men,  All Married Men Cheat. I say that if she’s at all like her character on Curb, he wouldn’t dare!  By the way, love her, love the book.

Peggy as Caroline Kennedy comes to mind, insane and implausible as that might be…

  2. # 2 Matt Maul Says:

Don Draper as GORT from The Day The Earth Stood Still

Rachel Menken as a biker chick

I think they're missing a prime opportunity if they don't get Jon Hamm into a Superman costume just once. :)

  4. # 4 Emi Says:
    October 27th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Don could come dressed to the nines as Peyton Saunders, heir of a wealthy family whose background makes him attractive for a romantic alliance, but he's boring. (sounds a bit like the 30 rock character). –he did Saunders in a Gilmore Girls episode.

  5. # 5 Scott Says:
    October 27th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

However, on the actual, you know, *topic* of the thread… uh heh heh… :D

Following on Nate Fillion's recent outfitting, it's so tempting to want to see Christina Hendricks dressed as a country girl in simple little sunfrock and sandals, plus a garland of flowers, in memory of the notorious YoSaffBridge…

  6. # 6 Alex Says:
    October 27th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Slightty Off Topic… but did anyone catch how, at the beginning of The Gypsy and the Hobo, Sally and Bobby proclaimed how they wanted to masquerade: Sally as Minnie Mouse; Bobby as an astronaut? Any explanations for how their disguises may have resulted in the gypsy and the hobo? Who decided this? Whose inspiration were these? Any ideas?

  7. # 7 Scott Says:
    October 27th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

The ideas are coming thicker and faster…

Jared Harris in a silver spacesuit and bubble helmet — lest we forget that he played the time-shifted, adult version of Will Robinson in the film version of LOST IN SPACE.

(Okay, so I'M the guy that liked that movie — don't judge me!)

  8. # 8 Caravelle Says:

    Peggy as Jackie Kennedy.
One of the Kennedy children would be better, but that wouldn't be much of a Halloween costume, so, Jackie.

Sal as a cat (cross-reference: Bryan Batt in Jeffrey)

Thanks for the Castle link. I like it, but keep forgetting it's on. Also, I'm always too sleepy to watch it on Monday night because I stayed up too late on Sunday night posting here.

So, Rich Sommer could go as a slightly bumbling office worker who knows way too much about fashion? (I know, it's obscure, but work with me)

Alternatively, we could put him in drag as Miranda Priestly or Andy.

And we can put both Jon Hamm and Anne Dudek in Charmed garb – they played the now-dead father of Agent Kyle Brody and a neighbor of the Charmed Ones. As a plus we could include the metal claw used to slice open poor Dr. Brody in the episode.

    OK here we go…

    Peggy-ADA Abbie Carmichael
    Roger-ADA Jack McCoy
    Kinsey-Det Robert Goren
    Cosgrove-Det Ed Green
    Crane-Det Lonnie Briscoe

The whole darned office (almost!) can dress up as the Law and Order gang!

Peggy is more of an Irene Dunn type ;-)

  13. # 13 Peggy Joan Says:

@ Alex # 6 — Sally was asking for a store-bought costume (from Woolworth's, I think) and Don nixed that wasteful idea before leaving for work.

Gypsy and hobo are 2 costumes that most resourceful parents can whip up at home without a large investment. Ghost is another favorite ;-)

I was wondering if anyone would mention Castle! I loved that. It was really great when his daughter said, "Didn't you, like, wear that five years ago?" Also, don't forget Nathan was also on Buffy as the evil Reverend in the last season.

  25. # 25 Robin D. Says:

Hmm… characters dressed as analogues of other characters the actors have played that would fit in 1963… How meta. I've come up with:

Roger as Walter Mondale (and actual Slattery role)
Joan as Mata Hari (a la YoSaffBridge from Firefly)
Dr. Wayne as a demon (a la D'Hoffryn from BtVS)
Lois as Lucile Ball (due to Crista's years on MADtv)
Bobbie Barrett as Batgirl (as Melinda was Babs in Dark Knight)
St John Powell as Sam Goldwyn (a la Maxwell Sheffield from The Nanny)
Lane Pryce as Dr. Frankenstein (see David Robert Jones on Fringe. Creepy.)
Mrs. Pryce as the Bride of Frankenstein (a la Sheila from Army of Darkness)
Hooker as Dr. Watson (assistant boy on Bones)

[Man, I love IMDb. I had no idea that Deborah Lacey, aka Carla, was Sarah Sisko on DS9. Or that Chelsie Ross once played a character named Jack O'Neil in something that wasn't Stargate.]

  26. # 26 Stace Says:

Kitty Romano as a southern high school cheerleader.

As an aside, I LOVED Nathan as the "hero", Captain Hammer, in the Dr. Horrible Sing Along Blog with Neil Patrick Harris.

"As an aside, I LOVED Nathan as the “hero”, Captain Hammer, in the Dr. Horrible Sing Along Blog with Neil Patrick Harris."

I know! I was hoping "Castle" would include a Dr. Horrible or Capt. Hammer in the background of his costume party! I LOVED that Castle gave a shout-out to "Firefly". Apparently, that is the actual costume. Fillion took it (and, I hear, several other things) from the set. *sigh* So sad to lose such a great show.

Hey…maybe Nathan Fillion can be on "Mad Men"!! What kind of client could he be? Head of a publishing company? Military captain (Greg's superior officer?)

  28. # 28 Tsatske2 Says:

    I’m going as Peggy.

I thought I was going to BUST A GUT when Castle strutted in in his Mal Reynolds gear. And the Buffy reference was classic; considering that Nathan did a stint on Buffy as the evil priest Caleb.
