Bitch is unequivocal about Souvenir: Pete Campbell is a rapist (h/t Basketcase Hazel).

In an article on the gendered response to Kater Gordon’s firing, feminist genius Kate Harding quotes Basketcase Karl. Woo! (Woo Karl, that is, not Kater leaving.) In related news, Robin Veith has left the fold as well. She will be sorely missed, but watch the media, and watch how it’s painted as women leaving rather than as writers leaving. Just a thought.

What Tami Said is interested in the relationship between the treatment of Sal and the treatment of women on Mad Men. Well, she’s interested in a lot. I’m summarizing poorly. You can read it.

  1. On Pete's rape: the uncanny thing about it is that it's a crime for which the evidence came first. He's carrying around this dress with a stain on it. (Was it reddish? And where's Linda Tripp?)

It's reverse causation. And from that point of view, it makes all the more sense to put Joan on the other side of the cover-up transaction. She's married to a rapist herself. Ick!

  2. FWIW, I have a bit of a connection to Robin, although I don't know her personally. From what I understand, AMC asked Matt to cut his budget on writers and directors, because they think he has too many. At the same time, Robin was ready to move on and is pursuing other opportunities in the industry. It sounds like it was mutual. Not sure if that's the same thing that happened to Kater, but I wouldn't be surprised.

  3. Mike, fascinating.

    G8, thanks for the info.

  4. No problem. AMC sucks for making Matt get rid of such talented people, whoever it may have been. All the writers have been vital to the quality of the show.

  5. Not sure really were to put this, but it's about a female character and slightly freudian ….. did I hear correctly? Does Roger call his mother, "Mommy?"

  6. Sounded like he either called her "Mommy" or "Mummy".

  7. Obvsly, I'm already on record as noting that there has been a decent turnover rate for writers on the show. So I agree that when the media paints it as women leaving, rather than as writers leaving, it may be unfair to all involved and may get framed in some feminist (or anti-feminist) way. However, I also note that Matt Weiner is not shy about promoting the fact that he hires more women than average for the industry, and he has gotten good pub for doing so. That might make the "women leaving" frame even more unfair, but it also makes it all the more predictable. If you make a big deal about hiring women writers, people will notice the gender when the axe falls, too… and likely leave out the broader context, because the media does not do nuance.

  8. Plus the fact that, if you have a proponderance(sp?) of women writers, then statistically speaking, there will also be MORE women writes leaving as well…

  9. Hey, has anybody but me noticed this: the episode is titled The Color Blue, in the last scenes Betty is wearing a blue dress, and that's all Don sees — pretty dress/not Betty looking obviously unhappy.

Don sees the color blue and nothing else: not Betty's cold demeanor/dissatisfaction.

  10. "The truth is, people may see things differently, but they don't really want to." — Don Draper

  11. It wasn't rape. She consented. You people are nuts.
