We love Janie. She has made Mad Men what it is. Her costume designs have been integral in creating the lush and beautiful world inside which our characters are so freakin’ miserable. Janie is also the Emmy-award winning costume designer for Deadwood, and Deborah loves nothing so much as a good-looking Western. Yum.

Happy Birthday from the Basket!

  1. I didn't realize she did Deadwood too. Deadwood was all kinds of awesome.

  2. Happy Birthday Janie Bryant! I love her work, it's one of the many reasons I watch the show. At least once a week I say "I want that dress/outfit"

  3. Janie has brought back the '60s with amazing and loving accuracy! Happy Birthday to a very talented artist!

(Now if only I could have some copies of some of my favorite MM outfits–like Joan's orange sweater with the cross strap from season 1, and Betty's long print dress from 'Souvenir'!

  4. I heartily echo gypsy's sentiments!

And we should all be encouraged to type more . . . colorfully on these threads.

I always felt like I needed a bath after watching Deadwood; I say that with great affection.

  5. Happy Birthday Janie Bryant!! Your work on Mad Men is truly amazing! Every week, I feel as if I am going back in time, and I too say every week: "I would love to wear an outfit like that!" Thank you!

  6. Happy Birthday ! She does wonderful work. The costumes are fantastic.

  7. Happy Birthday, Janie, you are awesome.

  8. Wow! No wonder I love the costumes on MM so much. I’m a Deadwoodhead since the beginning, and always thought the costumes were fabulous. (Remember Joanie’s tophat, Charlie’s frock coat, Al’s striped suit, Sheriff Bullock’s outfit, everything that Alma wore…not to mention Trixie, the whores, and E.B. Farnum!).

The costumes on Mad Men are phenomenal. Janie’s a genius. Happy Birthday!

  9. The birthday lady does brilliant work!

I have to wonder what her closet looks like, and where she shops for herself…in 2009.

  10. Happy Birthday, Janie! Thanks for all your meticulous work in seeking out such beautiful clothes. You’re one of the most influential women stylists in fashion today. Can’t wait to see what happens when mod fashions hit — and paper dresses!

  11. I just loved Betty's "Dolce Vita" dress AND jewelry

  12. The top two ’60s outfits are dead on: the madras plaid jacket worn with tie. “College prep” it was called in my neighborhood, not so waspy, but the Wasps wore it forever beyond school.

The dress with the sleeveless fitted velvet top, matching sateen skirt (I wore a version to a prom, slightly later in the ’60s, so empire waist, straight skirt. But I wore that same Trudy sillouette for a formal dance in ’63, different material.)

  13. Have we seen Betty in that gorgeous turquoise gown yet? I WANT THAT DRESS!!!

  14. Celia, Betty wore that dress at the dinner she went to when Jimmy Barrett told her that Don was cheating on her. I remember hearing Janie Bryant saying that they made 3 copies of that dress– maybe there’s still a spare laying around that you can have!

  15. Making my way through Deadwood now, another great, well-written and well-crafted series. Janie Bryant’s contribution to both Deadwood and Mad Men are significant and worthy of all the honors. So happy birthday to Ms. Bryant!

  16. ” maybe there’s still a spare laying around that you can have!” Well…you’d probably need the material from all three dresses pieced together for it to fit me….!

  17. Lol Celia–And you’d look Gorgeous!
