Mad News, September 30-October 6, 2009

October 06, 2009 By: Deborah Lipp Category: Actors & Crew, Characters, DVD, Media-Web-News

TWoP gives us Mad Men’s most outrageous moments.

While in Boston filming, Jon Hamm was spotted buying Mad Men DVDs (as gifts), which he admitted was dorky. But cute!

The Fug Girls guest write at Lemondrop about the Emmys, and criticize Elisabeth Moss for not showing us that she is a young beauty. Which she is, and that dress really didn’t in any way indicate it.

Lobbying for Oceana, January Jones visits Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and John McCain (R-Gene Hosfstadt).  Here’s an alternate picture posted from Sen. McCain’s Twitter (with bonus Grandpa Gene references). McCain also spread the word on JJ’s cause to ABC News White House correspondent — and Mad Men fan – Jake Tapper.

Talk about burying the lede! The Mad Men Live Revue “is expected to expand with a wider rollout over the next year.”

Classic styling for weddings is way better than being in fashion, because those wedding pictures sit on your shelf forever. Mad Men is mentioned as a source for such classic styling.

Mad Men snacks. Fun!

And with those snacks, how about some cocktails?

John Slattery is making a movie. Movies based on Philip K. Dick stories often enrage his purist followers, but they tend to be successful and interesting (Blade Runner, Minority Report, Total Recall).

411 interviews Elisabeth Moss. And I guess they didn’t have recording problems so theirs is up in a timely manner. And it’s illustrated with two gorgeous glam photos of Elisabeth as well as a nice one of Peggy.

Although this HuffPo piece is called House vs. Mad Men, it’s really Don Draper versus Gregory House, and which of the two has a shot at growing up.

Basketcase Jude sent this John Powers critique of Mad Men, which he both does and does not love. It’s very well-written”this is my favorite line:

But for some reason, creator Matthew Weiner has chosen to depict Kennedy-administration America ” renowned for its twist-and-shout optimism ” as if it were the Antonioni administration.

Hahahaha!

However, John Powers loves Joan.  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also loves Joan. SELF loves Christina Hendricks.

CBC News has a new article on the writers of Mad Men from Basketcase Taiga.

An interactive Flash-map of the Draper’s Westchester (which solves the Wentworth’s/Swenson’s mystery)! This is so cool I am making it a permanent part of our sidebar (under “Sites”).

And a little bit about the local real estate of Mad Men. Both map and this one from Basketcase Julie.

Gay Talese on drinking on the job in the 1960s.

In that vein, the women of Double X experiment with drinking Mad Men style on the job. Fun! (h/t Basketcase Allison)

Jeff Warren writes that things were madder than Mad when he worked at J. Walter Thompson.

“The Perfect Secretary” has a training film up for all you Sterling Cooper wannabes.

Access Hollywood prints Jon Hamm’s salary (though I believe he will be up for a new contract for next season  -K)

L.A. Confidential has interviews and smokin’ photos of Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss.

October birthday girl Sarah Drew has landed a gig on Grey’s Anatomy.

Via Momlogic, Extra’s coverage of January Jones’s beauty secret.

Singer-Songwriter Lucinda Williams shares her Mad Men love with the Village Voice.

Bryan Batt is considering marrying Tom Cianfichi in Vermont.  It was in the National Enquirer, which tells you how far Mad Men is permeating into the popular culture.

Alison Brie tweeted an adorable picture of Pete and Trudy during the shooting of Souvenir (from Entertainment Weekly).

Butterfield Catering took note of Trudy’s mention in Souvenir.

American Cinematography features the Mad Men Season 2 DVDs in the September ’09 issue, and has Mad Men on the cover for October ’09 (the latter is not yet online).

David Sirota imagines that the appeal of Mad Men is advertising itself, and that people are fascinated by it because of the ad industry’s effect on us all. (I disagree.)

Basketcase Therese alerted us to a fairly hysterical review of Souvenir on Best Week Ever.

(Mad New is compiled by Deborah and Karl. Right now, Mad News has too many news items, so we’re publishing what we have and will probably publish another one really soon. Keep ‘em coming, Basketcases, and forgive us is we forget to credit you!)

I dreamed about Basket of Kisses last night, only it was called Basket of Puppies, and Roberta and Deborah were yelling at me for spamming the comments with stuff about a new type of bucket I'd invented, with both handles on the same side. It had something to do with the next episode, so keep your eyes peeled.

    Nope, not drinking!

On topic: the difference between House and Mad Men is that while House has the magnificent Hugh Laurie, who would be fun to watch grocery shopping, the writing is HORRIBLE, sitcom stuff that makes Scrubs look clever.

    Re: BestWeekEver's review…
OMG that's EXACTLY what I said when Betty showed up–"Look honey the hairdresser attached a challah to her head!"
Was a mighty fine sophisticated challah, must admit.

  4. # 4 Therese Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 8:56 am

#3 Damn fine challah! What cracked me up was "Colosseum Hair Gets you Laid!", I admit, I really loved the Rome sequence, it was a lovely dream, wish it was real. Don was willing to let it linger, but Betty slammed it in his face. A shame too, I thought there was a slight chance that they might reconnect in the real world, but then we wouldn't have a show! Heck, if I had had a great weekend with my husband in Rome with canoodling galore, the afterglow would have lasted at least a week!

So happy to see all the love for Joan and Christina Hendricks–she isn't going anywhere!

Elizabeth (and/or her stylist), should have dressed her in the outfit from the L.A. Confidential photospread (the hammock photo), for this past September's Emmy's. My lord, that dress looked fabulous on her and the color made her skin look flawless and porcelain.

    The other dress is va-va-voom.

Our Vinnie made the cover of Draft Magazine where he talks about more than beer. Lots of cute pictures, too.

  8. # 8 Anne B Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 11:42 am

    FtLoP,

I could totally kiss you right now. :)

Not only is "Lost in a Supermarket" one of the best songs in the history of the world — seriously — but that is a great interview. I laughed out loud. Twice. And I was on a conference call.

    (Awkward!!)

True story: I too took the bus, to and from classes in my last year of college in Los Angeles. Good old RTD. :)

There was this place where the bus driver would stop the bus and no passengers could get on or off. Being the only transfer passenger the guy usually had, I stayed on. (It was in a residential area of Monterey Park; I didn't know my lawyer-gangta homegirl Lo Mei then.) The driver would in fact leave the AC running .. and eat lunch, or smoke.

    Good times.

Anyway. I like VK's half-step-toward, two-giant-steps-back from, car ownership. (He could try CityCarShare or Zipcar, if Los Angeles has either now.) But I love his earnest ambivalence in the face of monogamy.

    This:

I don’t want you to be with anyone else because that has to do with me how?

Dude. I write … and I don't even know where to start with the sentence structure on that one. :)

  9. # 9 dancewosleeping Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

    Anne B,
The computer I'm on has no sound (it's my main one in the store…no sound so my employees can't do WHAT I'M DOING RIGHT NOW) so LIAS is running thru my head instead…
I used to take the RTD (that totally dates us BTW; no Metro bus for us!) from the SF Valley to UCLA…good luck finding a seat, so I got REALLY good at standing up, holding on w/one hand, and reading out of a book with the other, while the bus jostled its way down the 405.
Recently, I was on a plane that was trying to land during a storm, and I sat there reading while everyone around me was (literally) losing it. I completely attribute that talent to the RTD!

  10. # 10 Anne B Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

    Wow, dance.

I sensed that you too were a homegirl. :)

I took the RTD to CSLA — that's where I got my Bachelor's. I paid my way through college and held down two, sometimes three, jobs while taking classes. Believe it or not, I never much minded that bus ride. It was the only time of day when I was accountable for nothing.

But you … taking the bus to UCLA? That's some real fish-out-of-water stuff. You must have been the only person on campus not looking for a place to park.

Here's my happy ending: I now live in SF and still take the bus. (More often cabs, which are fun and not too much of a splurge.) But MUNI goes pretty much everywhere.

My strap-hanging express-bus pavement-surf down Bush in the morning? Yup: learned it on the good old RTD!

Thanks for the memories, my friend …

  11. # 11 Donny Brook Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Vinnie on monogamy is priceless, mostly because he frames it from the woman's point of view. He is so not Pete.

Kudos to bus riders in LA. I lived there for 25 years and only rode the bus when my car broke down, like the native I am. I wonder if it's gotten better cause back then you could wait 20-30 minutes just for a bus to wander by, and it might not be yours.

  12. # 12 Erica Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Our man Don Draper is the #1 most influential man of 2009.

    Love it.

  13. # 13 Nancy Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 2:11 pm

Bryan Batt's not getting married. When it comes to the National Enquirer, trust your first instinct & assume they're wrong!

And he definitely wants people to know that Tom is older than the 38 they state in the article.

  14. # 14 dancewosleeping Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 2:16 pm

    Oh Anne,
It gets better cuz I live in Sonoma County now…so we're STILL homies!

  15. # 15 Deborah Lipp Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

    Thanks, Nancy!

  16. # 16 Anne B Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

    dance,

The good ones always move North. (Just don't tell hull and LAbaby I said that.)

We really are going to have to plan a NoCal Basketparty, one of these days. I'm going East for the finale, but … maybe sooner? Or maybe the S3 DVD release?

  17. # 17 Donny Brook Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

Anne B, I so agree. NorCal basketparty, I'm there! Just tell me when.

  18. # 18 dancewosleeping Says:
    October 6th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Absolutely! (Thinking to self…Wife already thinks I'm obsessed with the show…has no idea how much time I spend HERE…how do I sell it? Must channel my inner Don!)

  19. # 19 Aran Says:
    October 8th, 2009 at 11:47 am

Not sure where to put this, but in case you were wondering where they shot the Rome scenes, seems it was the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in downtown LA.
