I loved this outfit, very Mondrian and chic. Joan’s office look has become more predictable since S1 although her at home wardrobe has variety.

True to historical accuracy, the scarf tied around the handbag was probably inspired by fashion icon Babe Paley.

Several years later in the ’60s, I bought a color-blocked dress similar, but in brighter, later sixties colors.
And a friend’s mom tailored it closer to my body (similar to what Janie Bryant has done here.)
However, I believe Joan’s earlier dress would have had a more blocky shape, as well.
That Janie tucked this in for Joan’s figure is evident by the puckering around the buttons.

As a woman with a figure like Joan’s, I can say that if the dress had not been tailored to her body, she would have looked enormously fat. Blocky silhouettes are not made for girls with large busts, no matter how tiny our waists may be. Remember, with a blocky shape, everything falls straight down from the widest horizontal point, so from the side she would look like she was as wide through the waist and hips as she was in the bust, with two stick legs poking from below. A look suitable for only Twiggy types. Or children’s stick-figure drawings.
