Add “Woman Up” at Politics Daily to the roster of regular Mad Men bloggers with a political or feminist slant. I’m late to the party: This one focuses on The Arrangements.

Racialicious contemplates the @Carla_madmen Twitter feed.

Feministe offers factual information about Twilight Sleep and giving birth in mid-century America.

Several feminists are commenting about the Equal Pay Act reference. Amanda is pleased to have called it (I called it too; it’s been sitting in my Drafts folder for over a year, but now it’s too late).

I am going to say that I think Feministing is off-base on the baby-naming thing.

  1. Yes, well, feministing has been bothering me for awhile now. Not all men are a.) assholes b.) prison guards c.) just waiting for a raping opportunity.
Feministing does see the world through a particular framework. For example, although Betty's birth experience is disturbing and disempowering, I wouldn't wish a drug free, painful birthing experience on anyone who doesn't want that. For some of us, the pain is/was horrific and the epidural couldn't come fast enough. We're not all after that same magical, holistic, doctor's-stand-back-I'll-handle-this birthing experience. Some women need assistance. That's why we do it in the hospital these days. It's because too many of us were dying on our own.
They're too, I don't know, *something* for my taste. It's like the pendulum swung too far and they haven't reached an equilibrium. Women are persons first, gendered second. That's my philosophy. But it's not clear to me that it's theirs,

  2. Although I was much too young to experience Twilight Sleep, I can personally attest to the hallucinogenic effects of anesthesia in the 1950s.

I was knocked out on something called "orange gas" at the dentist at about 6 or so, and I still remember the devil, demon images that came up.

Again, after appendicitis operation at 8, my dreams were also disturbed by devil/ demons.

I'd put those down to a Catholic/scary hell/religious instruction, except that those images otherwise did not appear in my childhood nightmares.

  3. I can't find any references to "orange gas" but I think that may have been a colloquial reference by the dentist to a child.

I remember the gas being flavored by the scent of an orange, maybe to make it more palatible for children.

  4. Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
