Fugging the Emmys

September 21, 2009 By: Deborah Lipp Category: Awards, Media-Web-News

The Fug Girls think Elisabeth Moss looks old in her gown. I agree that it isn’t gorgeous on Elisabeth; it’s wrinkly and staid. That said, I think she slams the neutral tone, and I like it better on her than the red she wore to the Golden Globes. I was watching Shoot the other night, and Janie Bryant, in her commentary, pointed out how bad Joan’s red dress looks on Peggy; “it’s a bad color for her,” Janie said. Elisabeth looked lovely at the Globes, but the red washed her out. Here, her delicate complexion doesn’t compete with the dress, but it’s not a good dress.

They did the “Fug or Fab” thing for January Jones, and their audience loved her look. It’s a great dress, which would have been better with a necklace or bolder earrings, or more of a hairstyle, and without the near-raccoon eye makeup. Just sayin’.

The Go Fug Yourself Liveblogging included this gem:

4:01 p.m. Jennifer Westfeldt is in gray, which is pretty on her, but I can’t see the entire thing. We never noticed before how much she looks like Lisa Kudrow from some angles. Hamm is charming — we feel sort of bad for Jennifer; it must be weird to have dated him for over a decade, and yet all of a sudden everyone in town wants to straddle her man and ride him like a bronco. Flattering, but weird.

I don’t think I’m going to find anyone criticizing Christina Hendricks, because, wow.

and Jennifer Westfeldt is a fine actress. It is exactly what happened to Ralph Fiennes and Alex Kingston in England. He became a huge star and she was overlooked, until she came to America to star on ER. (They ended up divorced.)

I am sorry to dissent, but I did not like January's dress. It's too costume-y for my taste. Elisabeth's almost worked, but the top got a little fussy. Christina looked gorgeous, though.

Believe it or not, lots of people slammed Christina's dress as "too tight" and "too dull". I don't see how she could make ANY dress look dull.

I thought January's dress did not fit her well – the top stood alone and off of her chest by a good inch. Was not flattering from the side at all.

Here's the thing about January Jones. We know she's stunningly beautiful. However, on the red carpet, she just never looks as good as she looks as Betty Draper. Now Elisabeth Moss looks wonderful all dolled up, not being Peggy. But I don't think January can quite keep up with Betty in the looks department.

I loved Januarys dress, it reminded me of a a frillier dress with a diamond motif that Princess Diana wore once, if I find a pic of it on line, I'll post it.
Christina was Greek Goddess at her Best!!! LOVED it! Elizabeth's was okay, but I forgive her because all I could see was her crazy sweet love for her Fiance! They just glow!

    I didn't have a problem with January's dress, but I didn't love it.

I'm just tired of the way she tends to approach evenings like these: by loading the entire contents of her makeup kit into an industrial-spray-paint gun, aiming the thing at her eyes, shrieking, "It's ON, b!tches!!", and pulling the trigger.

It's a little old. As is that look.

Christina, on the other hand. Ahhhh: Christina. Is she the most beautiful woman in Hollywood? I think so; she seems to need no adornment at all.

The best thing about these three, whatever they wear: the last thing that matters is how they look. They are terrific actresses. Who cares how they show up to this thing? They could stop the Emmy ceremony at any point, re-run last year's, and few in the audience would even notice.

Meanwhile, these women will keep doing great work … and keep getting better.

It's true and at events like these, they are so underrated, which is a shame.

Mad Men is more important and meaningful than was the result of last year's election.

  8. # 8 Lissie Says:

January looked like the Chrysler building, but in a good way. Elisabeth's was a little too dowdy, the draping seemed to bunched up and it made her look heavier.

I'm beginning to think Cristina really IS Joan, just with different hair. People had the sweetest picture of her and the fiance:

If that man matched his tie to Christina's dress and eye color … HE IS AWESOME.

Okay. I guess he deserves her. :)

    Thanks Lissie!

I was watching the Emmys last night with a few fellow MM fans before the episode… three guys, two girls. All of our mouths collectively dropped when we saw Christina and January. One of the girls is a fashion student and was hunting around for an image of Christina's dress so she could make her own.

Mind you, the girls in our group also got very frazzled when they saw Hamm in a tuxedo.

I think every twenty and thirtysomething female I know has mad lust for Jon Hamm/Don Draper.

“…all of a sudden everyone in town wants to straddle her man and ride him like a bronco.”

Yeah, that just about covers it! Laugh out loud funny and dead-on accurate at the same time.

  13. # 13 brenda Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Cojo on ET put January in a 3-way tie for worst dressed, and named Christina as one of the best dressed.

As for who cares, the entire celebrity fashion industry cares – designers, jewelers, stylists, shoemakers. When Nicole Kidman wore violet Prada to the Oscars, she put them on the map. This is big big business.

  14. # 14 JS Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 5:19 pm

I can see why January went back to Versace after the success she had with her Globes dress, which had her in a more vintage style. This time she’s space age Grace Kelly.

Elisabeth could’ve been fitted better, Christina looks demure…Blake Lively could learn from her on controlling curves in the right dress.

  15. # 15 Stagmom Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 5:26 pm

I wouldn't recognize Miss Jones as Betty Draper if I saw her in person. Christina Henricks is Joan, Joan, Joan. What a gorgeous woman. Even on Oprah today – Miss Jones had the Betty makeup but lifeless "2009" hair. It's the hair that stands out on Betty, that sheen of golden blonde gloss that doesn't move. Jon Hamm looked great on Oprah, but thinner and smaller than he does on MM. As if his suit wasn't as padded. Is he small?

  16. # 16 Noah Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Slight OT: Can we please discuss the bat shit craziness in Matt’s speech for Best Drama? “What a year. First the election, now this.” Was he comparing MM’s back-to-back Emmy wins with our nation’s first black president? “I am the only person in this room with total creative freedom.” Ummm? I love the guy, but really…

  17. # 17 Melissa Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 5:57 pm

Elisabeth’s dress is lovely, but I don’t think it’s the right style for her. I think it’s more suited for someone taller with a long neck.

  18. # 18 Donny Brook Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 6:02 pm

I think January looks amazing. Not sure why cutouts are suddenly back in fashion, but it was all over Fashion Week, so I’ll forgive her. But they’re right, you just can’t make that woman look bad.

That said, Christina wins the Emmy for fabulous.

  19. # 19 Lisa Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 6:02 pm

I think January is stunning but that dress — I think it’s FUG :)

And I thought Elisabeth looked fantastic. If I was going to go to the Emmys I would go for a look like that! It was wrinkly but I didn’t think it made her look old at all!

  20. # 20 Stace Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 6:09 pm

I thought that Elisabeth looked lovely. Her hair and makeup were on point. The dress definitely was a bit dowdy on her and swallowed her a bit. I think she’d also look good in certain shades of green. That kelly green dress she had on at the end of the Maidenform episode was a perfect color for her. I think something more form-fitting up top works better for her also.

  21. # 21 hullaballoo Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 7:43 pm

I wouldn't call Hamm small. I think he's about average — maybe 5'11, and very lean. Not skinny, but definitely not a beefy guy. I'd say he has a tennis player's body in the mold of old school players like Stefan Edberg or Jim Courier. Jon's not as tall as Aaron Staton, Michael Gladis or Bryan Batt, but he's not so much shorter that you really notice their height difference. He's definitely taller than Kartheiser, Slattery and Morse. Oh, and he's gorgeous…but that goes without saying.

I saw Jon and January on Oprah, and he did look kind of small, but that could have been how they filmed the show. They were shot from above, which always makes you look shorter. And the set was strangely out of proportion, with that huge couch and Oprah's desk, which looked like it was about 5 blocks away from the couch. Even Oprah looked like a kid sitting at that desk. The set was horrible.

  22. # 22 Deborah Lipp Says:
    September 21st, 2009 at 7:49 pm

Noah, I believe the election remark was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

  23. # 23 seagirl Says:

Greg, you can add forty-fifty-sixty-something to your list of decades! And maybe not just females.

  24. # 24 Sally Says:

My two cents on the fashion – albeit it's their collective talent which caused me to watch *yet another boring awards show*….

January: I applaud her for taking a risk. Few others did. I thought the white was beautiful without being bridal or (yawn) grecian goddess, even though the bust a tad ill-fitting — hair and makeup – meh. She is lovely, no doubt, but why is it that she shines on higher wattage in 60's garb?

Christina: Not an earth shattering innovation, by any means — but considering most designers keep sample-sizes (former Neiman Marcus employee here) rather than Joanie-sizes on hand — I think she got one helluva good fit. She is not a woman who can (easily) wear a strapless or one-shouldered (Wilma) dress…

…witness the horror that was Patricia Arquette's choice: http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?iid=6558811&a...

I think Christina brought it on like a brick house – she's mighty, mighty~~

Elisabeth: Agreed that she can do neutrals — but this wasn't the one. Satin is unforgiving — both in wrinkles and the ability to 'stumpify'. This dress was designed for a much taller woman.

However — BONUS points! for beautiful styling. Hair and make-up were perfect. Glow from being in love, priceless.

My favorite ladies – well done indeed. :)

#24 – I am trying to figure that out too about January and the retro style.

I think January looked the best out of all the women. She wore something that Judy Jetson would wear and that gets thumbs up from me.

    She looked wicked.

Noah, I believe he was remarking about how good life gets sometimes. Obviously he voted for Obama and is happy about the outcome and now can't believe he got something else great to celebrate about too.

  27. # 27 Robin D. Says:
    September 22nd, 2009 at 7:35 am

Christina's dress is my favorite by far (I mean, DAMN, girl!), followed by Elisabeth's and January's. Lizzie's was a really flattering color and I love the neckline, even if it could've used a little more tailoring. Jan's bodice was just too architectural for my tastes, but I did like her skirt.

  28. # 28 spike Says:

    Christina: yum.

  29. # 29 Glad Mad Woman Says:
    September 26th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

January killed it. She always tries to wear something different and I think she can pull off just about anything.

I love that she doesn't look like Betty outside of the show. She's an actress. She's being herself, not the character.

However on Oprah, her makeup was so overdone it was distracting.
    Yikes!

    Jon Hamm is gorgeous!
