We have a few leads, but nothing in stone. We want:

Manhattan, preferably but not necessarily midtown.

A room that can hold between 100-200.

Despite the obvious themes that call, not too upscale. We want everyone who wants to come be able to come.

Decent food.

TV screens a’plenty. Duh.

Available on a Sunday night (we think November 8th, but can’t confirm).

Ideas. Bring ‘em.

  1. Phoenix was nice, and the sliders were like bovine crack (and most importantly, Weiner knew where it was) …wherever, I am there.

    XOX
    Glen

  2. Bovine crack was what the drunk guy was wooing me all night called it.

Honestly, Phoenix Park was perfect, but we were at capacity for that room, and I can't imagine we won't double or more this year, based on our numbers and on the fact that at the time, no one knew Matt was coming. Once we secure the place, I have a few folks I plan on inviting ; )

  3. I might be in NYC at that time this year. A few Canadian fans in my circle are thinking of taking a hike down across the border for a pre-Christmas trip to NYC — see a few Broadway shows, do some shopping, check out the Empire State Building, et al — so we may be coming.

If so, I'm so there. I'd love to meet you Lipp ladies in person, it's been years now of web chatter!

  4. Los Angeles — the Biltmore Hotel.

  5. hullaballoo did you even read the list?!!

  6. I guess Northern MN is out then. ;)

  7. If I can be there, I will, wherever it is. Does PJ Clark's have an event space, because that would be cool.

  8. We're West Coasters, but planning to be there.

It's about time we got in on all this fun! :)

  9. PJ's has an upstairs. And there is a branch in the Empire Hotel now.

You might check out the upstairs bar at Robert Emmett's on 8th Avenue. It can hold that many and has TVs. Food isn't bad.

  10. Hullaballo, I am SO THERE.

  11. It says wants AND preferably. Well, I want Jon Hamm, preferably right now but…I'm amenable to other options too. :-D

Ah, well. The Biltmore doesn't have AMC anyway.

Maybe we can do an internet video feed, coast to coast? Must think this through. That could work…

  12. Oh no I wish I could be there, but I'm in Austria, where almost no one knows mad men.
    Oh so boring!

  13. Ah, well. The Biltmore doesn’t have AMC anyway.

    Hah! Oh, good times.

  14. OOoooooooooooOO! Sounds like SO much fun!

  15. When I first started working at Ogilvy & Mather back in the 80s, and it was at its original location at 380 Madison Avenue, we used to hang out in a bar called Maggie's Place (http://www.maggiesnyc.com/). That would have been friggin perfect – it's certainly close enough to Sterling Cooper – and dead empty on a Sunday – except its private party space only holds 80. Boo! I'll keep thinking.

  16. Ooh wait! How about this? http://www.theperfectpintnyc.com/ They have a smoking lounge! I've been to the one at 45th and 3rd – it would be kind of a vertical party over a couple of floors. And ad people do hang out there – Mediabrands, Grey, Lowe, Gotham all in spitting distance. Like Maggie's, an Irish pub, and yes there are TVs everywhere.

  17. I had a high school reunion at the Perfect Pint; pluses it could not possibly be closer to Grand Central Station for easy access, also the food is pretty good there and comes out fast. Minuses, the multistory set up made it difficult to socialize (each floor above the ground level is small … about the size of the back room at Phoenix Park) When the show starts doesn't everyone want to be together to gasp at the same thing at the same time? Also, at the Perfect Pint the staircase between floors is steep, particularly after a few gimlets.

I would also toss out "Social" on Eighth Ave/48th. There are three levels upstairs and each floor is fairly large with its own full bar. Plus for that one is the size of each level, a smoking area in the back on one of the upper floors, the food is good and pretty reasonable; minus is that it's only easily accessible to the Port Authority bus terminal.

  18. Thanks, all. Funny, I was just at the Perfect Pint a few weeks ago, and was exactly the same vibe as Phoenix, but right–that upstairs is too small.

I'll look into these suggestions (we looked into PJ's last year and they needed more $ up front than we can pony up, frankly, but maybe we'll try again, what with all this year's buzz).

    Keep 'em coming, though.

  19. Can Jon Hamm be a door prize? :-)

  20. I've been to The Press Box for brunch a few times, but if you're expecting over 100, it'll be too small. http://www.thepressboxnyc.com/index2.html

  21. i don't mean to derail this, but i think an l.a. party for us left-coasters at the biltmore is a fantastic idea!! probably would need to be a more informal gathering, but still…i'm sure there are quite a few of us, right??

  22. Crash Mansion 199 Bowery holds big parties.

  23. I couldn't attend the Mad Men parties for season three. I live in NYC and would love to attend! =)

  24. I love all of you for pulling together on this. My sister and I (possibly husband too) are really looking forward to it!

hullaballoo, a coast to coast video feed sounds terrific: also tricky. But there must be some media types in L.A. who could make it work, yes?

If your group could get Jon and ours could get Matt, I'd call that a huge win. Of course, sooner or later we will all just have to consolidate for a massive International Basket of Kisses party.

Make like Trekkies. Call it a convention. :)

  25. Question what time does Mad Men come on in LA? Isn't there a three hour time difference? Wouldn't the folks on the east coast would ruin it for the west coasters?

  26. Wow, 100-200 people? Is the Basket that big nowadays? That's great, I'd love to meet more fans (although more competition for the trivia contest ;) ). I don't know NYC well enough to suggest a location, but with enough notice I will definitely be there again this year.

  27. I'm thinking 100-150. Last year was 50, and we are much bigger now, plus last year we didn't have any celebs–Matt surprised us, and put our parties on the map.

  28. The AMC HD and Direct TV feed on the west coast comes on at 7 with the replay at 8 local time, concurrent with the East Coast So it's possible to celebrate at the same time. If there's anything happening in LA I would love to join as I'm in SoCal that weekend…sorry to miss what promises to be a Party to End All Parties in NY!

  29. …too bad "Dublin House" does not serve food, it would be fun to have it in a place mentioned on the show.

  30. This might be worth investigating. I was at a get-together in the party space here – it's got a large balcony with its own bar that should be able to do 150ish, and the website claims more party space that I might not have seen. Just a few blocks from Penn Station, across the street from the Empire State Building; I sort of remember there being televisions.

Social on Eighth Avenue also sounds like a good bet.

Dublin House = one of my very favorite dive bars… could might squeeze 50 into the back room. Surprised Dr. McRapey drinking here? Kinda far from the hospital, though I guess Dr. and Mrs. Harris might be Upper West Siders.

  31. Hi-

Slightly, but not completely, off-topic: are there places in Manhattan where fans gather on Sunday nights to watch new episodes? I'm going to be visiting this weekend and thought I might look for a spot to watch (I haven't come across a lot of hotels that have AMC on the cable lineup). Thanks for any suggestions.

  32. There was a gathering a few weeks ago at Phoenix Park, where we had our party last year. They have AMC, and the Sunday night waitress is a Mad Men fan. But I don't think it's happening this week : (

  33. I don't live in NYC but … how about a Hilton bar? ;-)

  34. This is still on my mind. I had drinks here recently, and I looove the 60's reference in the name of the place:

  35. Hi ladies, any better idea of when the finale will be shown? Or should I bank on November 8th? I'm trying to plan my housing arrangements, because I *will be there*.

  36. I just told my sister to pull the trigger on her flight plans. Mine are set. I'm there in NYC on the 8th!

It's on, Basketbabies. Please let me know if you need my rather long-distance help. :)

  37. True. They have been wrong before.

I am just so darned excited about this.
