We wish Jared Harris a very happy 48th birthday, but the character he plays deserves no such pleasure.

  1. I am a sucker for an English accent, and for them little colored shades.

A la Gary Oldman in Dracula.

  2. Please note that Jared is age appropriate for this Lipp sister. (okay, for both. but just saying.)

  3. I love his wife…on the show I mean. I was like, is that Embeth Davidtz? That Junebug accent is recognizable anywhere!

  4. I think Lane is a tragic figure. Surely SC cannot be a plumb assignment. He got farmed out to NY as some kind of punishment, most probably. Ditto Mr. Hookah. Plus, his wife is a beotch.

Happy Birthday, Jared, and I look forward to finding out more about your character as weeks go by.

  5. I keep feeling this is a crossover from Fringe and David Robert Jones DID make it through to another universe and he's going to kill all the Mad people. It's coming in future episodes, I know it. ;)

(If you don't watch Fringe, nevermind.)

I love Jared Harris on Mad Men.

  6. I'm with you, Donny – so far I've seen Pryce as more victim than villain. Of course, it's early days yet.

  7. I agree with Donny as well. I think "victim" is putting it a little strongly, but certainly he can't help the decisions that the home office makes, and yet he gets the blame nonetheless.

  8. Yes, Lane Pryce is a tragic middleman; I'm very curious how this will play out with our two competitors. What an incredible voice, too. He brings amazing resonance to each line reading. I'd love to see an extended dialogue between Lane (Son of Camelot) Pryce and Paul (Son of Orson) Kinsey.

  9. Maybe not victim, but certainly errand boy. Unfortunately, I'm not feeling him as a formidable adversary to Don. He seems like too much of a milquetoast. Don could probably wipe him off the face of the earth just by blinking his eyes. And his wife is waaaaay too much for him to handle.

  10. Does anyone else think Mrs Pryce might be already seeking a diversion like the Don Draper treatment?

  11. I thought she looked like Embeth Davidtz, but I didn't think she was Embeth Davidtz. But I hope she is. Mary Crawford and Don Draper!

  12. No news on imdb.com, but on the TV Guide link, they say it is Embeth Davidtz, which makes me very happy!

  13. I think Lane's an alright chap. He's a company man, doing what London wants. It's a no-win situation for him.

  14. "Victim" may be a strong word, but it goes so nicely with "villain!"

  15. I just found out Jared Harris' father is (the late) actor, Richard Harris.

  16. Mrs. Harris is played by Embeth Davitz, although interestingly it's not credited on imdb, which isn't always accurate. I doubletake when she plays the icy snob character because in my house she'll always be "Miss Honey" from Matilda which was one of my daughter's favorite movies for about a year.

  17. Hmm, I don't know, I've met a few English folks in my time and lived in London for awhile and sadly , I think his wife is representative of a certain type of woman of a certain class and attitude, much more prevalant probably then than now, who is very upper-crust, very snooty, and that is just how she is, it isn't a matter of being a bitch. I think in a lot of ways how we see things and how the Brits see things are very different. They are a lot less "stiff upper lip" than they used to be but then, being cool, in control and slightly haughty, like Lane's wife is sort of par for the course. I mean, I remember after Princess Diana died and everyone was mad at the Queen for seeming cold and she made a speech on tv about her feelings about her passage. I worked in an office that always had to have either C-Span or the news on and my co-workers all stood around and watched. When it was over we all looked at each other and said, "that was the coldest thing I've ever seen in my life" and we were convinced that would not help. Well minutes later they did people on the street interviews and everyone who they talked to said it showed great feeling and they were happy that she had showed the appropriate amount of sorrow at last. We were dumbfounded. I think that is just a small touch of different perspectives can be on both sides of the Atlantic.

  18. #15- thanks for looking that up. If you close your eyes when he speaks, he sounds just like Richard Harris.

  19. Oh, I don't think Lane Pryce is that bad all. I actually find him quite likable!

  20. #17 I know what you're saying, but she still comes off as a bitch. She insulted New York! More than once!

I love how the men lie to each other later about how the evening went.

  21. I was just noticing on rewatch how many upper-class British clichés are stuffed into Pryce's ultra-American office. It's so over the top it's hilarious!

Besides the suit of armor, there's the square-rigged model ship, a pipe rack, all three volumes of The Compact Oxford English Dictionary with brass horse head bookends, a red leather wingback chair, a Wedgewood teacup, (a print of) a Roman bust, and to top it all off, a bowler hat on a hatstand, looking for all the world like 007 just tossed it there. It's like a parody of an English manor house!

  22. I love how the men lie to each other later about how the evening went.

Me too. That really made me laugh.
