And the movie Lorelei most likely remembers him from is Witness for the Prosecution (1957) in which he plays a charming, two-timing con man who nearly gets away with murder.
Tyrone Power was young and very handsome, although not so well remembered today. I saw him in 1939′s “Marie Antoinette.” He died rather young, age 44, in 1959. I hope Lorelei wasn’t subconsciously referring to Don’s mortality.
Maybe this is a shot in the opposite direction, but I thought it was a shout-out to Zorro–Tyrone Power played him in ‘The Mask of Zorro’, and what with the dual identities, one of which is a womanizing cad and the other as someone quite seriously rooted against injustice for freedom…it fits with Don’s behaviour in the context of the episode; as someone who plays it free and easy to disguise just what serious business being him entails.
@ Mari: Oh my goodness, that is such a good analogy, and not just because I love Zorro and his antecedents (like Douglass Fairbanks as El Gaucho). It also reminds me of a Superhero's secret identities, and how Betty leafed through Glenn's Action Comics with part curiosity, part disdain.
Tyrone Power was a very big star, and I found it a bit curious the Stew would say, "remember him?" as he had only died four years previously. The reference first triggered the thought that he died very suddenly, at a young age, of a heart attack on set. The Zorro post was brilliant, too. In addition, in his last role, he played a happy-go-lucky lying cad in "Witness for the Procescution," a story which had its own share of dual identities.
Tyrone Power was one of the handsomest men who ever lived, and is still considered so today! He is not forgotten at all – there are two box sets of his movies. The first one came out in 2007 and was such a huge seller that 20th Century Fox rushed out a second set a year later.
He was recently the subject of a weekend-long tribute at the Egyptian Theatre in LA. Forgotten? No. Gorgeous? Yes. But there are much better photos, though I realize you were looking for one that showed a resemblance.
And I just remembered that either Harry or Paul back in Season 1 said that Don could be Batman, for all they knew; Batman is a strong derivative of Zorro, with most Batman origin stories giving a salute to that in the final movie that the whole Wayne family sees (before the murder of Bruce's parents) being 'Mark of Zorro'. Mask was the 90s movie, my bad in that prior post.
call me crazy but i think Mr. Hamm looks remarkably like Clint Walker, who in 1963 would've just finished a seven year run on a tv western called Cheyenne.
i only have very vauge recollections that far back but i certainly remember him in The Dirty Dozen http://www.espritlibre.ws/celebrities/clint_walke…
Don't see the resemblance . . . except in their coloring.
Jimmy Barrett compared Don to Gregory Peck previous season – much more accurate.
I knew you guys would post Tyrone Power! Hamm is prettier, I'm thinking.

I don't know if it's significant, but it reminded me of the scene last year where Don told Peggy she reminded him of Irene Dunne.
Here are some photos where the resemblance is more clear:

Except Ty Powers smiles. With his eyes.
I loved the stewardess, she had a lot of personality. When she said that about Ty Power, it was funny.
If Don is Tyrone Power, then Pete must be Tommy Kirk (of Disney movie fame). I just saw an (awful) movie on TCM the other week, 1962's (Disney) Moon Pilot with Tom Tryon and Tommy Kirk. In one scene the two Toms are riding in a convertible and honest to God, it's Don and Pete! I don't have an image of that scene, but here's some of the two Toms. Mr. Tryon definitely has that Don Draper air!

(Ironically, like Sal, Mr. Tryon was deeply, secretly gay)

Tyrone Power was a real ladies' man. There was gossip in Hollywood that he got the young Judy Garland pregnant and she had an abortion.
Vincent Kartheiser is the only cast member who looks like Tyrone Power. As Pete Campbell, he's a ringer.
I see Don more like Gregory Peck too.

Yeah, that picture definitely looks more like Pete or maybe Ken, but the cinematic allusions make for good comparisons to Don.

I can see a bit of it but Don is more handsome, IMHO. I didn't know Tyrone Power died so young. So happy the show is back.
