The NYC premiere and why we won't be there

August 08, 2009 By: Roberta Lipp Category: AMC, Lipp Sisters/Basket, Media-Web-News, Scoops & Exclusives

Our story so far

As we know, the new season premieres on Sunday night, August 16th at 10pm. My sister and I had begun making plans for what looked like would be a pretty outstanding party. There were discussions of some exciting collaborations, and I had a ‘yes’ on at least one celebrity guest. We really wanted an epic gathering of the Basketcases.

For more than one reason, we put the whole thing on what became permanent pause. The main reason was that we’d heard word of the Times Square event, and we wanted to be there, along with you all.

Here is all the available info on that event, as well as other NYC Mad Men fun.

The plot twist

After months of scheduling negotiation, Deborah and I are going to L.A. to spend a day on the Mad Men set on Monday, 8/17. Whooh hooh! We are quite psyched, although the irony of our missing the big New York premiere does not escape us. AMC had all invited us and stuff. And yet? It was a no-brainer. So a big brownie thank you to AMC either way, ’cause of how they’re the ones who greenlighted our trip to the set.

Just so you know, we are still not guaranteed to get on the set that day. Production schedules change, and if the set is closed, the set is closed. Also, we have no idea who will be there that day. They really don’t know these things until a few days before. So we’re traveling at risk. And yet? Whooh hooh!!!

Regarding the premiere party, we apologize for our lack of commitment–typically we are very committee–and for any confusion or inconvenience that may have caused. I think going forward we will stick to season finale events–not as much competition.

We’ll be writing from L.A., don’t you worry.

Also, we will continue the tradition started with Season Two with live open threads for each episode. My recollection is that doors opened at 8pm.

Kisses–
rkl

HOLDEN: You think you do that on purpose? Maybe you’re trying to protect yourself?

BUFFY: Protecting myself? From heartbreak, misery, sexual violence, and possible death? Not so much.

HOLDEN: From committing.

BUFFY: I commit. I’m committed. I’m a committee.

    Pure, unadulterated jealousy and loathing.

    That's it.

I am jealous but I can't hate. ;) Give a shout out to John if you see him. :P

Yay…more Buffy fans. LOL I miss that show…none of these new vampire crazes measures up in the wit and skill of BTVS.

Noah, I think of all the Basketcases, you're the one we'd be most willing to try to smuggle in with us. Your loathing is both appreciated and unappreciated ; )

  5. # 5 Donny Brook Says:
    August 8th, 2009 at 11:27 am

It's too tiring to keep on hating you for this kind of thing. Besides, you deserve it. I hope you get to see Jon.

  6. # 6 Roberta Lipp Says:
    August 8th, 2009 at 2:22 pm

I really, really can't guarantee we'll be permitted photographic evidence, y'know?

Joy, I'm still trying to find out if there's a way the Basketcases can get into the AMC corner of the 'Square'. Also? I was just telling a friend about how we voted here for Basketcases but how I was pushing for Basketeers. Yesterday, I was saying this. Refreshing to see you say it.

And as a total aside, I was also remembering our party (Joy was the first one there and had the honor of helping with set-up) and how nice it would have been for us to take pictures of the room, the favors (umm… little baskets of kisses, among other things) and like, each other. Doy.

Thank you for the hate exhaustion. I am listening to his podcast right now. I would certainly love to meet Jon. Because of how he’s Hamm. My god.

OK, well, I was being gracious to you and Hull for your opportunities earlier – but now I’m joining Camp Noah. :X Exclusive pictures and information may be accepted as part of peaceful negotiations, however.

My fingers are crossed for a season finale party again – I had such fun meeting the other Basketeers at the bar, and since the MM fanbase has been growing the past two years, I can only imagine there’d be new BoKers to meet. In the meantime, are other BoK Non-Elites planning to attend the NYC screening? I’m debating getting dolled-up and coming down to NYC, getting dolled-up and staying in Boston, or assuming my typical spot on the couch in front of the tube and computer for the BasketChats….

  9. # 9 Shelly Says:
    August 8th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

I hate living on Ohio. I'd definitely attend your parties if I lived in NY. No one around me watches Mad Men, except ME. It's depressing.

if anyone should get to go, besides me, it's the two of you. Don't let them lose your luggage: it might show up on the doorstep back home days later and freak Betty out.

If you ever need help planning the finale party this year, let me know. I'm a former event planner and can always use the practice. I LOVE theme events!

  14. # 14 Noah Says:
    August 8th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

@Roberta – I’ve been smuggled many a time and can fit in any number of small bags and containers if necessary.

Oh, and I’d like photographic evidence of this set visit. (:

  15. # 15 seagirl Says:
    August 8th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Ladies, no one deserves this more than you and hope you have a wonderful time on set. Wishing you ample moments with the Hamm and all other good things while in LA. Can't wait to hear it all.

  16. # 16 Roberta Lipp Says:
    August 8th, 2009 at 7:49 pm

lsaspacey we will definitely take you up on that. I'm a project manager for a living but don't do so well in my own life.

  17. # 17 Deborah Lipp Says:
    August 9th, 2009 at 6:22 am

lsaspacey, what Roberta said. I have a heart attack every time I have to plan a social event.

  18. # 18 Jeremiah Peck Says:
    August 9th, 2009 at 7:09 am

so what else is going on in NYC next Sunday? are they projecting the episode in a designated area (with seating and clear sound) or will it just be on one of those huge screens on the side of a building?

  19. # 19 Jill Says:
    August 9th, 2009 at 8:55 am

Carry on, ladies…..our thoughts, prayers, hopes and dreams go with you!

Very exciting! I hope you have a great time! I'd love (if allowed) some pictures of backstage (or whatever it's called in TV-land) – to see behind the scenes kinds of stuff. We need a picture of you two on the Draper's couch or Don's desk… something iconic. Have fun!!

  21. # 21 Belle Jolie Says:
    August 9th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

How lovely! As others mentioned, please take lots of pictures (if that is allowed). What an incredible way to start the new season.

  24. # 24 Joy Says:
    August 10th, 2009 at 8:51 am

Roberta: I took some photos of everything, but unfortunately my camera was on it's last legs, so the pics of the Utz chips and baskets came out blurry and I came out looking unattractive. :D Seriously, though, I have a few unexceptional shots of that evening containing other Basketeers, and I can send them along if you'd like, but I'm sure you have better pictures.

  25. # 25 CoolBliss Says:
    August 10th, 2009 at 9:04 am

So you're supposed to get dressed up and stand around in Times Square watching the show on a big screen, or is this indoors?

No way I am standing around with all the proles in the street!

  26. # 26 Camille Says:
    August 10th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

I plan to be at the Times Square event. Though I'm not much of a dresser-upper.
