…Roberta and I will undoubtedly write quite a lot about it in the next few days; all without violating our spoiler policy.
I was actually so wired and excited last night that I was up past 1 a.m.; leaving me in no shape to write a cogent review. But here’s what I want to say:
Wow.
Wow, bam, pow. Home run!
This is not For Those Who Think Young. This is not crowded with “updates” that bring the new audience in. It’s smart, it’s accessible, it’s incredibly shocking, it’s very funny, it’s did I say shocking? Holy wow shocking. Sexy. Thrilling. It’s Matt Weiner at his best and we all know how good that is.
I will write more soon, I promise.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

As if I wasn't excited enough for August 16th!
You are both clearly evil human beings for bragging about this. I am so jealous, I am pretty sure that my skin is the same shade as Kermit the Frog's.
Soooo… it's good, then?
AHHHH…I can't wait! I'm so glad you guys liked it, I know last year's premier had some people feeling one way or the other. This year seems to be on point.
I kind of hate you right now. But in a good way.
August 16th seems so close, yet so far…
[BTW I went into a Banana Republic for the first time yesterday. By myself and wearing a t-shirt and gym shorts. I pointed at one of the many Mad Men displays and declared that I wanted to look like Don Draper. I tried on a $900 suit. Then said I'd come back with my mom's credit card. I didn't.]
I'm too blinded by jealousy to say anything nice.
We suck. Sorry.
Oh wow, you ladies are evil, but in a good way.
…and we can now officially declare you part of the MM in-crowd!
[I'm trying to think of what would be SHOCKING and I thought of Don with Sal]
I hate you both with the power of 10,000 suns.
But we have your word that it was awesome and that carries a lot of weight. I can't wait!
Does this mean that you will be able to preview EACH new episode of Season 3?
In any case, I think you are finally being rewarded for all of the hard work you've put into the Basket! Congrats!
I was so jealous when I first heard you got the press kit, and even more so now. Go ahead, rub it in further. Tell them how cool the Zip-po drive is.
Words fail.
Okay, they do not. I am jealous-hatey-jealous … with a side of seeeeethe.
I am jealous too. Very.
Without anything to spoilery did any of the shocking events even for a moment seem out of character? Make you rethink the character? That is what I most worry about when I hear something is shocking.
I'm curious how you are going to write about it without spoiling anything? I remember having the movie watching experience of The Crying Game ruined just from all the revewers saying how "shocking" it was, even though they said nothing else. Because as soon as "that" character came on screen and got my Spidey sense tingling I knew that that HAD to be it. And I was right…worst movie experience ever.
So, I think I'll just avoid reading anything you write about it until after the premiere.
Sooooo jealous. I've heard a few rumours about ep1 and I have my theories/hopes on what the shocks might be. Can't wait!
But, you know, I have to stick up for 'Those who think young'. I know it was a slow paced episode, but I don't think it was a bad one. Rewatching on DVD I thought it set up the season 2 story threads with so much grace and delicacy.
falafel, I agree about FTWTY. It's still not my favorite MM episode, but I do like the far-off, haunting quality about it — particularly the last scene featuring Don's voice over, and the imagery with all those somber grays and the bright red mailbox.
I'm putting aside my seething jealousy for a moment to respond!
I'm so glad it's a great episode – I had no doubts. I want to be spoiler and review free when I watch on the 16th – so I am not reading any reviews (even from you guys and I LOVE you guys!!).
However – even from the little I've heard – I'm getting so nervous that expectations will be too high. One thing about quality shows is that they always EXCEED expectations – and Mad Men has always far exceeded expectations for me. I will always be a fan – but I'm starting to get nervous that regular fans will (having heard how "shocking") will be expecting such – and therefore it won't be as shocking!
I can't wait! I'm thinking of going to Times Square (that must be a recent picture you took… there are no cars… do people outside of NY know they've cut off traffic there? It makes the traffic on 7th Avenue a nightmare!) – but it's been so hot/humid I don't know if I could take it!
lsa, I know how you feel about Crying Game. Many people had the same experience with Sixth Sense. I will be very careful.
By "shocking," I mean I experienced strong emotions that were startling. It was very edge-of-your-seat. Yet it was entirely right for all characters concerned. It is our Mad Men.
falafel, slow-paced wouldn't put me off. My complaint about FTWTY is that it is disjointed; a Stone Soup of ingredients designed to catch us up rather than stand alone.
I am, by the way, remarkably comfortable with being hated.
Shocking…Shocking…All I can think of is something that might involve Sal. Or Maybe Betty, or maybe Pete, or maybe any of the whole cast!!!! No deaths, I hope!!!
Okay, just read your post#18 about 'shocking'—now I think I'll need a big box of Kleenex!
I'd like to reiterate Christiana's question. Does this mean you'll be receiving screeners for every episode like most critics, or was this a special exception?
Waiting for August 16th and experiencing the same joyous anticipation I had as a child 2 weeks before Christmas….imagining the upcoming 13 episodes full of extraordinary richness, riveting drama and unending surprises… all wrapped in their glittering best and just waiting to be ripped open, savored, dissected and digested, not just by all the basketcases, but hopefully by MANY new viewers as well!
Am I getting too carried away by all of this????
I'm envious. I only know one other person who's screened it, and he's resisting my efforts to pull out details. Although I did wheedle some Don/Sal info out of him.
From #18:
"Yet it was entirely right for all characters concerned. It is our Mad Men. "
This is the best endorsement possible. I can't wait for the 16th.
I am so jealous and yet I pity you. Season three, episode one has been revealed to you, yet now you must wait until August 23d to see episode two…or is Weiner cutting you a break on that one, too?
Damn that Weiner.
So give the deets on how you were able to view it.
I can't wait to see the premiere.
Shelly, I bet it went a little like this:
Shiny black car pulls up to an undisclosed location. The Lipp Sisters are waiting, dressed down yet looking fabulous. Two men in black suits and sunglasses emerge from the car, approach our girls, and hand over a package.
"Here it is. You know what to do … and not to do," says Man 1.
Man 2 opens his wallet to reveal ID.
"And we were never here."
Dyna Moe's Mad Men Yourself got a shoutout on the Daily Beast! http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/20…
i'm un-facebooking you both.
Well I'm still thoroughly jealous. However, I went to see Funny People tonight and a curious thing caught my attention.
Rachel Menken is immortal. I arrived at this conclusion when Adam Sandler's character tries to flirt with a Jewish woman played by Maggie Siff. Then, during the credits, I noticed the character's name was Rachel. Bam.
Also, Bryan Batt played Adam Sandler's character's agent who introduced Rachel Menken. Total Mad Men geek out ensued.
[That was horribly off-topic. But I got too darn excited.]
I just hope Peggy doesn't hook up with the priest…or Don! That would be too cliche. I think Matt Weiner won't take any obvious paths…
Deborah thank you for being reasuring abou what "shocking" means.
Noah that is so great regarding Rachel! If I were not tired I would go on about Rachel as the force atracting away from the Shiksa godesses like Betty Draper, but I am not going to make sense of it.
Sommgirl really there is not a character who has already existed on the show that I could want Peggy to hook up with. Peggy needs to widen her circle of aquaintances.
I'll admit I'd love to see the premiere ASAP, but you did start the website and give the rest of us Basketeers a home, so I can't be too jealous of you gals… I am very glad that it will be "our" MM, though, despite the media blitz.
Anne B–Actually I bet Man #2 said “This never happened.”
Awesome. A great tribute to the labor of love the Lipps put forth here and the little community they have created. I am doubly excited for the premiere.
Sommgirl, I agree, Weiner would not go down such an obvious and cliched path! (leave that to Network offerings!) Mad Men always gives you the unexpected.
Also, I just changed my MM calendar this morning and there's a lovely picture of Rachel with a Mai-Tai.
Deborah & Roberta:
I want to send you guys something re: airline travel/stewardesses, which may have something to do with S3's opener (only you guys would know!). I have a gmail account so I am concerned it will get filtered out. Suggestions? I am a technological cro-magnon man so you may already see my address.
Frank Bullitt
Anything sent to the lippsisters email address should get through.
portiaslegacy – I actually could see Peggy and Ken getting together. He was very supportive when she was doing her first commercial, he always calls her "Pegs" (or some nick-name) and kind of punches her in the shoulder. Ken needs to grow up and he certainly acts like a frat boy at work – but I could see he and Peggy working out down the road. (It would KILL Pete as well which would be nice!)
Peggy + Hollis FTW!
“I actually could see Peggy and Ken getting together.”
I could too, they’re both ambitious and would make an interesting pair. Besides I think his character is the most underdeveloped of the boys.
….finally revealed that Ken ( making $300/week…lots more than others in his group ) is Roger's son out of wedlock ( remember Alice Cooper's comment to Roger about 'regards to his children' and he says he only has one )
But wasn’t Ken also the one who, when asked whether Peggy was a “Jackie” or a “Marilyn” answered….”Gertrude Stein!”. Not exactly flattering looks-wise…..
I actually thought Alice Cooper was describing Roger's mistress, Jane, as one of his "children". It was a slight against him because of how young she is?!
I've just recently become obsessed with this show. I've seen both seasons in a 3 day span. Totally ready for the next season now. LOL! This website is fantastic!!
