As more and more of these arrive, it’s possible I’ll tire of putting them front and center, but I doubt it. Thanks to the Basketcases who are keeping me on my toes with these!

Although there are many fab fashion shots, this is absolutely my favorite, because it’s so full of mystery. Who or what do they see with such a capacity to startle YodaBert?

  1. A lot of the characters in these shots look as if King Kong were bearing down on them.

  2. Is it just the photos, or will the show have that kind of sepia tone? I like it.

    YodaBert rocks.

  3. I love Bert at the shoe shine without shoes… hilarious…

Where is Ken? He wasn't with "the boys"…

Don is in brown – which dovetails the very brown tones he wore post California (camel coat apologizing to Betty, brown with the "dad vest" and kids in the hotel room etc…) – a definite turn from the grey, charcoal, black and blue tones that he normally wears… I think it's more a character thing rather than a "time-what-was-in-style" thing….

Don/Betty – January/Jon … I mean really. Really? Come on. I know they are both gifted and talented actors – and I don't mean to be so shallow but they are so beautiful. Stunning.

  4. So now we know who belongs to that set of red fingernails at Haussner’s. "Out of Town." I wonder if that means when the cat's away…Looks like there's something there for Don and Sal.

And Stephanie, I agree. Jon/January/Don/Betty — gawgeous. It's like Jimmie said, are they "a matched set?"

Thanks for sharing the pictures. Fantastic. The colors seem autumnal? Lots of browns, rusts, tans, and other earth tones. Fall 1963, perhaps?

  5. I love this photo.

  6. Great photos, thanks for posting.

Is that really Jared Harris with Bert? If so, he's not looking too good but glad to see him back.

Betty's reflection is so similar to the one in the clothing store window from last season. This time it is a jewelry store!

  7. I found myself googling Breakfast at Tiffanys after seeing the Betty photos. She really seems to be channeling Audrey Hepburn in the publicity photos from that movie. The movie was out in 1961 btw in case you're like me looking for a clue as to the year.

  8. These photos are all sort of haunting in a way, I think it's the color tones, I like it…

  9. The shot of Lane Pryce and Bert Cooper looks especially telling. I gather this is the beginning of the Austerity Era at Sterling Cooper.

  10. Do anyone else get the feeling that the Drapers have moved to the city? Betty downtown shopping and with the taxi. Just a thought.

    • tarab, I think that people then (as now) tend to believe that the city is bad for children. Moving two suburban kids to the city would not be seen as good parenting. The goal is to get out of the city.

  11. "Does" sorry.

  12. "Do anyone else get the feeling that the Drapers have moved to the city?"

Interesting theory…they would certainly have the money to afford a deluxe apartment in the sky. LOL

  13. It's hard to work up a good shine on a pair of cashmere argyles.

I've often wondered if Don and Betty might move into the city. She'd probably be happier there.

  14. They can certainly afford it now, what with Draper clearing half a million in 1962 after the sale of SC. His take would be worth roughly $3.5 million today, which is enough to live comfortably in Manhattan (although, in a sad and somewhat disgusting way, not enough to live in Manhattan indefinitely in any era).

You know, it's funny: since this is shaping up to be a season where the financial constraints come down from PP&L (with Lane Pryce most likely being their financial enforcer), the dramatic tension between Pryce and Draper is going to get intense.

Draper was so clearly leagues above Duck in terms of playing the political game and bringing real (or perceived) value to SC; I suspect Pryce is going to be a much harder opponent for Draper to lock horns with.

Of course, Draper has one significant card to play against Pryce if it comes to that: he can always walk away.

  15. @#4: Hull, thanks for echoing my initial impression about the color palette that we're in autumn. I flip-flopped because I'm so eager to get to 1964, but now that I've seen the photos in aggregate, I'm again convinced we're in autumn. Re, the sepia tones: reminds me of faded Kodak snapshots of my family from the era. Love it myself, hope that's the overall look of the show, really helps create the sense of looking back.

  16. It was great to see who the red nails belonged to. I feel a bit sorry for Sal though. There's a handsome pilot at the table, and he can't do anything, not even a hint of flirting with Don there.

Regarding Betty, my guess is that she spends a day in the city shopping. It's not too far away. Maybe she and Don get together for dinner before they go home, or she could stop by the office and they meet for lunch.

  17. Should we be concerned by the lack of Ken Cosgrove? Will he be the first victim of the shift in power?

  18. meghan:

Matt Weiner has said that all the regulars are back for season three, which includes Ken.

  19. Betty is definitely not showing, so it's either fall 1963 or fall 1964, after she's had/not had the baby.

Did you notice the tape marks on the floor of the group photo (it's photo 9 in the second set)? Probably not supposed to be there. Also, one of the newcomers looks like he's wearing shoes in YodaBurt's office.

Roger is reading the New York World Telegram and Sun, which went out of business in 1967.

  20. I noticed the color palette too. Definitely Autumn of '63. I say 63 because Betty is back to her pre-preg figure. The brownish suit with the big Oleg Cassini buttons that Joan is wearing also points to '63. (very Jackie) This is from the same scene I saw in EW the other week with Joan and the new Brit. (although in print, it looked more like olive green).

What this has me wondering though, is, that Matt Weiner said that JFK's assassination has been way overdone, and hinted earlier in the year that MM may not approach it, but he also said (more recently) that Season Three is about big changes, the world changing, and Nov. 22 1963 was considered the touchstone of change when the 60's Became The 60's. Hmmm. What do you think?

  21. There's often a substantial bit of time in between episodes. I suppose the assassination could take place between episodes.

  22. Here's a bit about January Jones I just found on the OK! site, she talks about 'softer figures':

January Jones: Too Skinny for ‘Mad Men’?
    July 29th, 2009 10:12 am / Author: OK! Staff

January JonesMad Men star January Jones admits she’s been having trouble filling out the girdle of the curvy late ‘60s character she portrays on the critically acclaimed AMC show — and it’s gotten her in hot water with producers.

“I got told a couple of days ago that I look too skinny, and I was in trouble,” January sheepishly told reporters at the July 28 party for the AMC network. “I’m naturally pretty thin, so I’m trying,” the beautiful blonde actress said, showing reporters she was drinking an Amstel Light beer at the party.

Also, January says, “I eat whatever is at craft services. I’m a big eater. I’m from South Dakota, so meat, potatoes, carbs.” The star notes that to maintain Mad Men’s early ‘60s look, in which women definitely had more meat on their bones, she and the other actresses are “encouraged NOT to work out. We want soft; we don’t want any muscle definition.”

January’s character, who is married to advertising guru Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm, is pregnant during the show’s third season, premiering August 16. It has affected her wardrobe: “We’ve done a little bit less petticoats and it’s been really fun.

“They tell us to gain weight, gain weight, gain weight, because they want a soft, voluptuous woman which they were [back then] which is beautiful, as it should be.”

  23. Wait a minute, what?!?!!!

January's character, who is married to advertising guru Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm, ,is pregnant during the show's third season, premiering August 16. It has affected the wardrobe…

Is that a spoiler or an error? If she's still pregnant, then the time slot is much earlier. Are the pictures we're seeing supposed to be the early days of her pregnancy — fall of 1962? Is Season 3 going to follow Betty's pregnancy?

Don's two button jacket seems too modern for 1962, although JFK did make waves when he began wearing them — which I believe was in '62. Don's probably an early adapter, but it still seems anachronistic to me. '63-'64 seems more likely for Don to be wearing that kind of jacket.

    Hmmmm. Lots to think about.

  24. It'd be funny now if the premier started like 2 days after the last ep stopped.

  25. Oops Hulla! I should have read the post more carefully, might be a typo! I still think it's fall '63

  26. Oh, no Therese. I'm not being the spoiler police. I just thought it was an interesting bit of information. You could gloss right over it, if you weren't paying attention.

  27. Roger is not wearing a wedding band. But he does have a pinky ring on.

    Hmmm…

And it's possible Betty lost the baby she was pregnant with at the end of S2 and is now pregnant with a different one. Or that she had that baby already and is pregnant again.

  28. Or maybe she had the baby and now her body is acting like a normal woman's body after 3 babies–bigger hips! And thanks for your comment, hulla, I did gloss over that part! But it does make this more intriguing. Don doesn't wear a wedding ring at all does he? 17 days, 17 days…

  29. A few new (some previously published) pics at
    http://spoilertv.blogspot.com/search/label/Mad%20

They're publicity photos, and cite AMC as the source, so not spoilerific or anything.

And am I registering as spam? I seem to post a comment, but it doesn't appear until a day later or so. Have I been kicked to the curb?

  30. Deborah, I could just be losing my mind. Maybe I thought I posted something, but got sidetracked and didn't. That happens.

  31. With regard to the rings, we had a post about this a while ago — or at least some discussion of them. Neither Roger nor Don have ever worn wedding bands, while most of the other married men on the show do wear them, or have worn them at some point. For example, Bert Cooper wore a wedding ring in season 1, but not in season 2.

  32. Looking at these again and someone had mentioned the more subdued color of Pete's suit. I'm wondering if that indicates a physical representation of Pete choosing Don over Duck and trying to model his wardrobe after Don?

Love!!! Joan's rust colored dress that matches her hair.

I noticed the missing ring on Roger as well, I would have thought that maybe he would want to wear a ring for Jane but maybe not. Or maybe they didn't get married.

Cannot wait, 13 days to go!
