What else are you watching?

July 19, 2009 By: Deborah Lipp Category: TV-Film-Culture

We did this about a year ago, and I thought, in the run-up to the August 16 premiere, we could discuss our general television viewing. Because, fun!

I still love Saving Grace. Some of you (Noah!) have mentioned not liking Holly Hunter. For shame!

I still don’t have HBO, so I’m missing True Blood, but season 1 DVDs are out, so maybe I’ll start.

I find Castle pleasant and interesting and undemanding. Might not care if it didn’t have Nathan Fillion.

My biggest passion is So You Think You Can Dance, which is practically a religion in this house. My other reality shows are Project Runway (which also starts in August), What Not to Wear (like a bible to me) and The Fashion Show (which I watched this season but won’t return to).

How about you?

Earlier this year, I was excitedly watching the final season of Battlestar Galactica. I’ve also just recently finished watching all five seasons of The Wire on DVD, which is incredible. I’m thinking of catching up on Big Love next, but I’m English and the DVDs aren’t widely availible here.

Rec for American posters; I hear the UK Life on Mars is coming out on DVD this month in your country. Get it!

Oh yes, True Blood is wonderful! I am thinking about starting Breaking Bad since it had a few Emmy noms. And then there is my beloved The Office.
Gotta throw Weeds in there too! Kevin Nealon has great one liners in that show!

Damages, Breaking Bad, Lost, Project Runway.

Right now, the only drama I’m faithfully watching is Rescue Me, which might be having its best season yet.

I’m staying with the new season of Weeds so far, but I haven’t been as impressed with this season as in the past. The comedic bits are still great, but the dramatic story is starting to feel like they’re keeping it going just for the sake of doing it.

Other comedies I’m watching are two on Comedy Central currently – Reno 911! and Michael and Michael Have Issues. Both from alums of the MTV sketch show The State, and both with immensely silly senses of humor.

I keep meaning to check out Sons of Anarchy before the new season starts (in no small part because Maggie Siff is featured prominently in the ads) and Damages as well, because there isn’t much I haven’t liked from FX. I also really need to catch up on Breaking Bad, I watched most of the first season while it was on but just stopped for some reason.

Okay, in my defense, I adore Holly Hunter [The Piano is amazing] but I think she deserves a better show. ;)

I religiously watch 30 Rock [hands down funniest show on tv], Breaking Bad [really good first season, but absolutely explosive second season], Lost, The Simpsons [still funny, especially in comparison to Family Guy], and So You Think You Can Dance [Janette ftw].

I DVD Flight of the Conchords, Arrested Development, Twin Peaks, and Mary Tyler Moore.

And I love me some Jeopardy. And Malcolm in the Middle.

True Blood…LOVE, so campy, so fun. It’s a great world to escape into for an hour and it really hooks you in.

Damages is something I fell into a couple weeks before the start of the second season. It’s one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen, it’s like a novel. Fast paced and the twists are mind-blowing.

I’m also into any of the Bravo reality shows, particularly The Real Housewives series.

But today I watched a movie, White Oleander, I recently read the book and had to see the film.

Recently I discovered The United States of Tara, which I adored, and I might be willing to say that it’s the best show on tv, after Mad Men. It’s so smart and refreshing, while balancing sharp comedy with one of the most poignant family dramas I’ve seen on TV.

I love 30 Rock, The Office, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The latter is best described as a comedy about the 4 biggest assholes on the planet. Danny DeVito produces and does a great turn, along with the regular cast (especially Charlie Day!) Also, The State and it’s spawn (Viva Variety, Reno 911, Stella, Michael and Michael have Issues, and the movies too!)

From Adult Swim on Cartoon Network I love The Venture Brothers, The Mighty Boosh, and Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace. Those last two are actually from the BBC.

For reality tv, I love Bravo, even all the housewife shows, but especially Top Chef (Masters!), and Project Runway (which I guess I will have to tune in to on Lifetime). I also watch The Hills, to my chagrin, but only for the schadenfrueude and reminding myself that I am so lucky that I have other priorities than trying to live my life as a replication of what is glamorized on MTV.

DVD wise, it’s The Wire, Arrested Development, The Simpsons (especially pre-season 9), Futurama, MST3K, The Critic, Errol Morris’ First Person, Strangers With Candy, The Office UK, Extras, and as much French and Saunders as I can get my hands on.

And what I can never resist if I see it in reruns: Golden Girls, Bewitched, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, Maude, Rhoda, MTM, Dobbie Gillis, The Patty Duke Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy.

Most of the time though, my dvr is recording whatever looks good on TCM. I would be devastated if I did not have access to that channel. I look forward to the day I become a professional film historian, when I will try to write off the cost of cable because TCM is so essential.

TV is such a wasteland in the summer that I’m watching little of anything. Right now it’s The Next Food Network Star, Top Chef Masters, and a Canadian show called Triple Threat (a reality show in which young performers train to sing, dance and act). At night, I toggle between Jon Stewart and Charlie Rose as well as David Letterman and Conan O’Brien. I’m also watching the Tour de France every morning before work.

My default channels are Food Network, Bravo, E!, TCM, the cable news networks, PBS and the CBC. The CBC has a great evening newscast called The National and an interview show called The Hour.

The Daily Show, The Colbert Report,30 Rock, Better Off Ted (very funny) TCM, Designed to Sell on HGTV, Ugly Betty,Mentalist, Smallville, and the last episodes of Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies–which never should have been canceled! My kids like Wipeout! and I Survived a Japanese Game Show.

    Oh yeah, LOST too.

Been really getting into True Blood lately, just couldn’t resist anymore. I convinced myself I wasn’t missing anything because I don’t have HBO, but no, it’s really mad fun. The books by Charlaine Harris are actually quite good. Both very addictive.

I LOVE 30 Rock and got the first two seasons on DVD–somehow I forgot how hilarious they were! Gah. Tina Fey is my hero. And hello, Jon Hamm’s guest spot this past season? Awesome.

My tied-for-favorite-show with Mad Men is Pushing Daisies, and its second season is released on DVD on Tuesday. Seriously, I cried when this show got cancelled. It’s so fanciful and sweet and kindhearted, you can’t help but love it.

Therese & Luisa, so glad to see I am not the only one here who finds the upcoming tv season lacking because Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone won’t be back. Seriously, after Ugly Betty (which I have intense, complicated love for) ends I will not watch any more ABC. I watch Lost there too (and was disappointed with S5, but still might need to know all the island mysteries), and occasionally Scrubs and Better Off Ted, but I am mad they extended Scrubs after what would have been a perfect series finale.

Amongst other recently ended shows I watched pretty regularly are Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (I liked it more than any of the big screen sequels) and Battlestar Gallactica.

I started watching Chuck because of “Captain Awesome’s” Mad Men appearance. I am pretty regular with Bones (though lately I’ve been irked, but it is regular in my household) and Fringe which became more compelling by the end of the season than I would have thought possible at the beginning.

As I do not have HBO I recently started watching The Wire (between seasons 3 &4) and Big Love on dvd. I need to know what happens next.

Also in anticipation of AMC’s The Prisoner I’ve been watching the original on their web site. Even if the remake is bad, I am glad they put these up.

I feel like I confessed to a lot of tv.

  13. # 13 portiaslegacy Says:

Oh yeah, how could I leave out The Daily Show and The Colbert Report when they keep me up to date on all the cable news I am not watching.

  14. # 14 Greg H Says:

I love Battlestar Galactica, The Simpsons, The Daily Show, Dollhouse and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It pains to me to acknowledge that BG and Sarah Connor are now both over… I’ve recently been going into the DVD vaults to watch The Sopranos and The Wire, also.

I actually had a great conversation earlier this week: it seems as if a number of sci-fi fanatics are Mad Men fans too. I have a few private theories as to why, but any thoughts?

  15. # 15 hullaballoo Says:
    July 19th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Oh to have access to TCM, IFC, Sundance, and Bravo again. Stupid cable system for rearranging my channels, and stupid economy keeping me broke so I can’t afford the new “tier.” But man, I loved, loved, LOVED TCM. Such an invaluable resource. The Smithsonian should declare it a national treasure. Seriously.

Since my cable’s been scaled back, I’ve come to appreciate PBS once again. Masterpiece (formerly Masterpiece Theatre), Mystery, Nova, Bill Moyers, the NewsHour and Frontline still represent some of the best television programming out there. Unfortunately, none of this is “lightweight” television. You actually have to pay attention to these shows, and often I just need the TV to be background noise. Admittedly, as much as I enjoy these programs, I don’t watch them as often as I’d like — but whenever I do, I’m usually blown away by them.

I try to get my news and “information” fix from one or all of The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Rachel Maddow Show, and occasionally, The Soup or Best Week Ever just to remain current with all the ridiculous pop culture stuff.

    Other than that…

    * Breaking Bad (love Bryan Cranston)
    * The Office (Steve Carell is the bizarro world Don Draper)
    * 30 Rock
    * Psych (lightweight, but fun, and the guys are cute)
    * Leverage (not nearly as good as Hu$tle, but I love seeing them “stick it to the man.”)
    * Damages, although season 2 wasn’t nearly as good as the 1st season
    * Sons of Anarchy (tuned in for Ron Perlman and Maggie Siff, but stayed because of Katey Sagal, who’s wonderfully vile — think Lady MacBeth on a Harley; the scene where she whacks this girl upside the head with a skateboard is almost as good a television moment as Pete’s shrug from season 1 of Mad Men.)
    * Glee shows promise, and I can’t wait to see what they do with it when it returns in the fall (plus my good friend is the costumer for the show, so I have to watch it.)
    * Occasionally I’ll catch an episode of Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Bewitched since they provide good cultural context for Mad Men.

  16. # 16 RetroGirl Says:

I Netflixed S1 of True Blood and it was so good that I bought a few episodes on itunes because I couldn’t stand to wait on my 2 at a time delivery. I decided to suck it up (pardon the pun) and get HBO again since there’s really nothing else on for me right now. I was going to get Showtime for Weeds, but I couldn’t justify the cost just for one half-hour show. If they had brought back Brotherhood, I would have gotten it though. bitter.
I was thinking of getting rid of my cable altogether, but now I have True Blood, I can watch MM in real time with everyone when it returns, and then the final episodes of Nip/Tuck will be on in October.

  18. # 18 Joy Says:

Much as I hate to admit, I haven’t watched much television recently, and I probably wouldn’t watch any at all if it weren’t available through the internet (yes, I didn’t even have AMC during S1, had to eagerly wait for iTunes the next day!). Still, I love 30 Rock and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, and I’m looking forward to catching up on the past season of Breaking Bad, Lost, The Tudors, and Big Love.
I catch British television through TheBox.bz as well, and my favorites across the pond are Mitchell and Webb and their scripted comedy Peep Show.

The Fashion Show, as weak tea until Project Runway returns (although I’ve started working Thursday nights and Bravo never seems to repeat at a good time — I might buy the last three episodes from Amazon.)

Burn Notice — I normally don’t go for the spy stuff, never even tempted by the dangerous right-wing fantasy 24 — but Notice is well-written, the cast charismatic and crackerjack, the scenarios Rube Goldberg in a good way.

I came late to Breaking Bad, but like Mad Men, Bad is a fascinating universe all it’s own, fully fleshed.

Psych is lightweight, but usually amusing.

Sons of Anarchy — reminds me of the early seasons of Oz, a brutal world beautifully told.

Big Bang Theory — I assumed, wrongly, this would be a twenty-something boink fest, or as unwatchable as When I Met Your Mother, but my brother turned me on. A sit com about socially-retarded physicists — yeah! I love a series smart enough to tell jokes that go over my head.

Oh yeah, and the guilty pleasure of Two and a Half Men — same producer as Big Bang Theory and the late-lamented Dharma and Greg. Chuck Lorre, a genius at fish-out-of-water, sit com style. (Fans of D & G also loved Joel Murray as Pete Cavanaugh, a lazy, happily-debauched lawyer — which in retrospect seems a warm up for the more complex Freddy Rumson.)

Caught up on Big Love while staying at a friend’s house, and miss Weeds from the days when I subscribed to all the premiums.

The Daily Show and The Rachel Maddow Show for my news fix.

And Ace of Cakes — normally I don’t like food shows (I don’t get to eat or smell the results, so seems pointless to me), but the Cakes crew is funny, and it falls under the only kind of reality show I like, in which I get to watch somebody make/create something artistic, kinda.

A dance (back when I watched Dancing with the Stars), fashion, pretty amazing cakes.

Portiaslegacy, totally agree on boycotting ABC: first they cancel Pushing Daisies, then unnecessarily drag Scrubs into another season(s?). Ugh. I’ll have to watch to see Lost’s last season, but after that, I think I have to quit.

Forgot to mention–LOVE The Soup. It’s like you never have to watch reality TV ever, because the best parts are on The Soup. And that’s all you need. Cracks me up every week, I have a multi-pass on iTunes just ’cause I have so little else to entertain me, TV-wise…I mean, how does a television lover live on only basic network channels during the summer? It’s impossible!

  22. # 22 Donny Brook Says:

Burn Notice is fun. I recently watched all of The Wire, which is even better than MM, imo. I also love Project Runway and I don’t care what network carries it. My fav shows are still probably Daily Show/Colbert Report and Mythbusters.

In the summer, I mostly watch baseball.

This winter, in addition to re-watching The Wire with my husband, I might try to catch up on Breaking Bad. Plus I’m slowly making my way through Babylon 5 for my cheesey scifi fix. Oh, and I pre-ordered Californication because Callum Keith Rennie is on it in S2 and S1 was freaking hilarious!

  23. # 23 Peebs Says:

Rescue Me, (which is probably the best show on tv right now), Weeds, Nurse Jackie, True Blood, Hung. Those are all currently running new episodes.

I also love Dexter (fabulous show), Deadliest Catch (don’t judge me…some of those guys are really sexy!).

Can’t wait for Californication, Breaking Bad and MAD MEN!!! Woo-whoo!

  24. # 24 Melissa Says:

I’m also awaiting the premiere of Project Runway. Other new shows I watch regularly are Law & Order: Criminal Intent, In Plain Sight, Daily Show/Colbert Report, and 30 Rock. I watch and enjoy Castle if it happens to be on, but it’s not planned viewing.

For DVDTV, I’m working my way through Dark Shadows for the second time.

  25. # 25 Scott Says:

If you mean right now, during summer, my main television squeezes are True Blood (and if you are a fan, you HAVE to check out Jacob’s recaps on TelevisionWithoutPity.com), So You Think You Can Dance, The Closer, and Deadliest Catch. I have also been watching reruns of How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory (both of which I will be watching in the fall now that I have given up on House), and have sort of gotten into Better Off Ted.

Once the fall season arrives, my list is way too long to go into here…I DVR at least three shows a night. Yeah, I know.

  26. # 26 Robin D. Says:

My current summer TV consists of SYTYCD, Top Chef Masters, Iron Chef America, No Reservations, BBC import Merlin, True Blood, Leverage, <Burn Notice, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Canadian import The Listener, and the last few episodes of Kings. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this week’s run of the new Torchwood miniseries on BBC America (such a fangirl for that show!), as well as the next season of Mad Men next month. When I remember it’s on, I’ve also been watching the new gymnastics show Make It or Break It on ABC Family. It’s not great television, but it’s entertaining in a Stick It sort of way.

As for DVD, I’ve been extra-featuring my butt off with Burn Notice season 2, Secret Diary of a Call Girl season 2, Eureka season 3, Stargate: Atlantis season 5, Leverage season 1, and Mad Men season 2. In the next couple of weeks I’ll be adding Pushing Daisies season 2, the remastered and recut Stargate: SG-1 pilot ‘Children of the Gods’, Dollhouse season 1, and Torchwood season 3.

When I list it all out like that it looks like I have no social life. :( I assure you that I do. I just don’t get nearly enough sleep. Also, commentaries are good to listen to while I’m doing tedious things at work because I’ve already seen the episodes and therefore don’t have to actually watch them to know what’s going on.

I was overjoyed at the renewal of Dollhouse, and I’m happily awaiting new seasons of Lost, House, Dexter, Monk, and Psych. Glad to have Leverage back. Castle is a good show, though, like Deb, I wouldn’t have bothered to check it out if Filion wasn’t in it.

I stayed with True Blood to the end of its first season, but was never enthusiastic about it, so I haven’t bothered with the second season yet.

I realized a couple of years ago that I just can’t watch half-hour sitcoms anymore. I think it’s because I’ve seen too many of them in my lifetime. So I find I can’t sit through How I Met Your Mother despite the presence of Alyson Hannigan and Neil Patrick Harris, or 30 Rock, no matter how much I love Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, or The Office, even though just the thought of Steve Carell makes me laugh (I even liked the Get Smart movie.)

I still love The Daily Show, and remain loyal to Letterman when I’m up that late, though I’ve been tempted over to Conan a couple of times.

    NO Reality Shows!

And on Saturday mornings, or if I’m home sick during the week, I still can’t resist watching the Angel reruns. :-)

Precious little. Mad Men is really my thing. Especially now, it stands very much alone.

In season, we watch 30 Rock, mostly for Tina’s writing and for Alec being Alec. I’m fond of Nurse Jackie, and True Blood is fun.

Dexter is great, and I do try to stay up for The Daily Show and Colbert when my schedule allows — who doesn’t love satire? My kid watches Rescue Me on Project Free TV, and sings its praises.

I truly miss The Wire. That was the most achingly relevant TV I’ve ever seen. To compensate, I read: Richard Price (“Lush Life”, excellent). But that program, its dark beauty and its lack of an audience haunt me still.

What if they made the most honest American television show in history, and nobody watched it?

So You Think You Can Dance – I am all about Ade, although I would be okay with almost anyone left winning.

How I Met Your Mother – someone above called it unwatchable, but I beg to differ – I think Slapbet was one of the best episodes of any comedy ever on TV.

Castle – I wouldn’t watch it if it wasn’t for Cap’n Tightpants, but I do love seeing him on my TV every week, and I think the girl who plays his daughter is adorable.

Big Bang Theory – I don’t love everything about this show (could it be any more dude-centric?), but I do love seeing what Walter is wearing.

Dead Like Me – I just finished this series on Hulu, and I’m so sad that it’s all over and there’s nothing left for me to watch.

I never watched The Wire because I don’t get any pay channels.

I am eagerly anticipating Glee in the fall.

I like Masterpiece Mystery: Foyle’s War, especially, which I am catching up with via DVD, and Miss Marple (Series 4 right now!) and Inspector Lewis (Series 2 starts Aug. 30!). I love History Detectives and If Walls Could Talk. I also watch What Not to Wear and House — basically what these all have in common is that I liked to be surprised at the end of the story. If the story takes place prior to 1980, it’s that much better for me.

How I Met Your Mother – someone above called it unwatchable, but I beg to differ

Oh, I didn’t mean to say it wasn’t a good show. In fact, I mentioned it, and The Office and 30 Rock, because they seem to be the best sitcoms out there right now. It’s just that I can’t watch sitcoms anymore. Even the good ones make me fidget.

To compensate, I read: Richard Price (”Lush Life”, excellent).

Oddly enough, I just picked up this book today, and I’m really enjoying it so far (fifty pages in). It has the same immediacy as The Wire, which is not surprising from one of its writing staff.

I just don’t watch much TV, but I finally started watching The Wire. OMG. What have I been missing?

I am rewatching MM to get myself prepped for Season 3. Open. Open. Open.

Ugh, I forgot True Blood and Big Love! Big Love is really outstanding. Hung looks alright, I’m planning to watch it On Demand when I get around to it.

And Hullabaloo, you also reminded me of PBS! I ADORE History Detectives, Frontline, Bill Moyers, the documentaries, et al. But unfortunately unless I hear about something extra-special from public radio or my parents, I miss a lot of stuff on there.

Damn, I watch a lot of tv. But with a very critical eye, hehe.

I think The Wire will live on in DVD sales for many a year. It’s really the best tv show ever made. At least once a season I was reduced to wracking sobs, and the best MM ever got out of me were a few misty tears. (Not that I don’t adore MM, you all know that.)

    Wallace!! *sob*

My sister recommended the Wire to me as she agrees with #44 Donny Brook that it is the best television show ever. I definitely love it but the “Mad Men” era of the early 1960’s is preferable to me than crack-filled Baltimore of the early 2000’s. My once favorite, Rescue Me, has become predictable. I’m also missing “Brotherhood”. Did anyone else see it besides me? Movies and Friends reruns and reading have become my past-times. Can’t wait for August 16th!

I agree with those who bring up The Wire – it’s like the “great American novel”, only in television form (creator David Simon actually claims that each season was deliberately structured like a novel). I only recently became a convert, when I purchased the entire series via a ridiculously good one day only deal on Amazon. Watching the show, I come away thinking “this is America, this is how things work – and why they are so f#%ked up”.

The only show that I think has a chance to live up to it by the time it completes is Mad Men.

Also love 30 Rock about as much as I love Mad Men.

Once again reiterating, but Rescue Me is having an unbelievable season – my jaw has dropped multiple times, which does not happen often.

I enjoy the campy debauchery of True Blood, though it’s certainly not high art.

Recently started instant Netflix viewing Californication, which has surprised me quite a bit through just a few episodes – really though, it’s totally a show that probably is a lot better if you have lived in L.A.

Still like The Office, though it’s dropping in quality. Loved the 2nd and 3rd seasons of It’s Always Sunny, but could barely stomach season 4 – it just wasn’t funny anymore. I could say the same thing about Flight of the Conchords, which I loved season 1, then season 2 had maybe 2 good episodes and that was it.

Lost, of course. If the world ends before I get to find out how Lost ends, that would be my biggest disappointment.

Watched the pilot of Hung – it intrigued me enough to watch more, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Project Runway, always fun. What Not to Wear, I could use a make over. Rescue Me, becoming very predictable. Real Housewives, great mindless stuff when I’m sewing.Sons of Anarchy, kind of like it but wish they’d get the hell on with the dead fathers legacy stuff.Love Cooper Anderson on anything.Any of the bravo chef shows, Top Chef, Next Iron Chef etc. Who doesn’t love Alton Brown?. Going to try out the new version of V on 11/03. Just finished watching the old one on the net and geebus how horribly campy it was but the idea was fun. Battlestar might get put in the dvd player but not before my new all seasons cd set of Upstairs Downstairs gets done.I’ve got two quilts in progress and my daughters clown costume (Really its her job :) ) to finish so I’ll have stuff on the tube that I can function with sharp objects with. *snicker* I tend to have things like the History channel, Biography, or How did they make that kind of shows running in the background of things I’m doing around the house. Ok I am trying the (right arrow)br(left arrow) break thingy tag to see if I can make paragraphs. This whole post might turn into an eye exploding disaster. Apologies.

When I’m not doing repeat viewings of Mad Men I am thinking about it. Or writing, or posting here. Nothing else that’s first-run really compares.

Donny Brook #44, YES. The Wire was the best I have ever seen, hands down. MM is getting close, but nothing else has ever touched the dark beauty — and even darker humor — of that series. I learned more from it than I’ve learned from any medium.

Now? I watch Project Runway when I remember. Top Chef: it’s full of more talented chefs than ever, but I can’t remember who got eliminated the last time I watched, and I don’t know why I should care.

I like Glee. The writing is catchy, and there’s one character that I find great fun to watch (Sue!), but she’s not always on.

I watched an episode of FlashForward and thought I’d be all, OMG, this is SO appointment TV, I’m gonna watch every week!! … and then I was just, meh. Joseph Fiennes and Roldie from Harold & Kumar, take it from here. I’m sure you’ll work this out.

Oh … and I will watch Californication. But only for Rick Springfield. :)

30 Rock! I will watch that. For Alec. And Tina.
