Mad News, July 10-15, 2009

July 15, 2009 By: Deborah Lipp Category: AMC, Actors & Crew, Awards, Matthew Weiner, Media-Web-News, Season 3

Joe Bua is so in love with us it’s not even funny.

EW reminds us of a tour of set design elements of Mad Men they did back in October, which I think we missed.

EOnline also posted this really confusing thing, that says “see below” for an exclusive S3 scene, but there’s no, um, “below.”

In yet more EOnline news, their “Tater Tops” awards results are in, and Mad Men wins “Best Grown-up Show.”

People has dish on Christina Hendricks’s wedding plans.

A new cable offering called “MyPrimetime” (spaces between words are so 20th century) includes Mad Men.

Mad Men and Desperate Housewives have revived interest in aprons.

As part of a Mad Men promotion, Variety is offering up its digital archives for 1960–1965.

Monrovia, CA was temporarily shut down for the filming of a Mad Men episode. Basketcase judy brown shares pictures of Monrovia, and says the town has

a preserved downtown that could suit either a 1962-ish setting, the bowl-cut Dick era, or even earlier.

Jennifer Mathieu hates a new Lifetime show concept called Drop Dead Diva. So do I. Mega-hate. Hot steaming hate. In passing, she mentions that no basic cable channel should create original programming unless it’s AMC creating Mad Men. Ha!

Patrick Fischler is profiled. Did you know he’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s brother-in-law?

An Emmy nomination for Mad Men is a given, says NPR.

Matt Weiner talks to Canwest, and is as quotable as ever. Just a taste:

“It is every aspect of my life,” he says during a break from shooting season three on the studio set. “It is destroying every relationship in my life. I am having an affair with it. I am obsessed with it 24 hours a day…”

Bryan Batt tells TV Guide about the Season 3 premiere: “[B]ased on the script, it’s really an exciting first episode.”  There is also video accessible at the link.

AdAge reports on Banana Republic and Clorox throwing in with the Sterling-Cooper crew.

The Mad Men Examiner serves up a two-part collection of 1960s TV commercials.  If you thought Don Draper and Roger Sterling smoked a lot, you should see Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble light up.

Magic words that make life tingly: Jon Hamm publicity tour. Thanks Basketcase Kim for the heads up.

Tim Goodman, who already weighed in on the show Emmys, takes a shot at who should win acting. He includes Jon Hamm, January Jones, and Elisabeth Moss.

Oh, gawd, Monrovia. LOL. And the Pasadena Star News — the worst newspaper in the world. But I say that with affection. It’s my hometown newspaper, and Monrovia is where my mother currently lives. It’s even more sleepy than Pasadena. Gotta give it to Mad Men for finding all the quiet retro suburbs in the Los Angeles area. Parts of Monrovia are straight out of 1952. But I was there last Thursday night. How did I miss it?

Wow, the Pasadena Star News, that takes me back as well, hulla. I lived in the smog belt myself for a time. Monrovia is perfect setting for MM.

I think the “scene” that EOnline is referring to is actually the picture of Don and Roger. But I could be wrong, and they meant to link to a scene.

I have to say, I’m obsessed! Love you, love the blog.

Love Don Draper. Can you send him to me? FedEx, I wouldn’t want him to spoil.

And, btw, it’s kind of funny. “Not even funny” indeed.

  6. # 6 Alex Says:

I think the EOnline “preview photo” for Season Three involves a bit of a hunt. Find Ann from Lowell, Mass and go from there. (Don’t want to spoil.)

PS. And no, it’s not the ensemble photo from Season Two.

Long time reader, first time poster — love the site! Great links, thanks for sharing. Patrick Fischler looks much different with darker hair!

Oh, I see. It’s a link to the spoilery shot that E! posted in the past.

I agree with S. Tarzan. It’s the pic of Don and Roger. At least, I don’t think we’ve seen that photo yet. They look like they’re up to something. I wouldn’t trust those two with my life.

My imagination is going wild as I look at the photo. They are definitely up to something together (talk about mirroring). Hmm, three place settings – Are they waiting for someone?

The guy taking pictures in the Flashcube ad looks like a young Ken Cosgrove. Also, OMG FLASHCUBES! My sister and I used to used old, spent flashcubes as chandeliers in our dollhouses.

  13. # 13 Jackie Says:

January is in the August issue of Elle starting on page 216 modeling fall Versace and looking very unBettylike. Unfortunately Miley Cyrus has the cover.

Have you seen this interview with Janie Bryant? It seems to be fairly recent because they talked about Brooke Shields at Michael Jackson’s funeral and KJB promo’d the season 2 DVDs.

But be forewarned. The hosts of this show are annoying and gooberish.

    Re Monrovia: daaaaammn.

I grew up in Arcadia (3 of my 5 siblings were born at Methodist Hospital)and all I can say is, I knew they were keeping all those crazy-ass twee-throwback places “as is” for SOMETHING.

And now, here it is. Thanks, Matt!

My sister worked at the Monrovia library after grad school. (This was during her early afraid-of-life phase.) She loved that little downtown area … especially the little tea shop with the dolls and the china. I never felt quite right about going in there. I was never wearing the right high-button shoes.

Seriously. Want to know what white people with a taste for history will get up to? Visit the Smog Belt.

And don’t forget your little white gloves. (You too, guys.)

I see, Deb … the shot is buried in an E! gallery. Maybe they’ve posted it before, but I’m not much of an E! person so I hadn’t seen it.

One photo. Now I feel …

    ANXIOUS.

Not sure if this has been posted somewhere already, I just found it today. This is part of a series that is centered around the Emmys (I guess, although a lot of the people on their roundtables weren’t actually nominated). This is the one that has the most January goodness…
