  1. That quote actually inspired me to think about my own life. I never thought a TV show could inspire self-examination the way Mad Men does.

  2. Greg H, I was also compelled to think about my whole life. This episode compelled me to question the safety of building walls to protect myself, and challenged me to be present in my life. Mad Men helped me to break down some of those walls. As much as we like to diminish television and other media from our lives, it can have a significant influence, as any artform can. Mad Men was the first media to articulate the phenomenon of “scratching” against my life.

“I have been watching my life, I keep scratching at it, trying to get into it. I can’t.”

Recognizing that I was scratching against my life was the first step. Of course, it will take so many tries to actually get present. I’m learning that. I think Don will have that lesson ahead of him. Will he still keep trying after things don’t miraculously change after his revelation?

I used to think the revelation was the change. Now I know the effort to change is the change.
