Christina Hendricks is mentioned in a Times of London article on women dyeing to go red.

Ms. Hendricks also gets a mention in a Calcutta Telegraph article about the West’s rediscovery of curves.

The Guardian blogs “The Jet Set.”

Matt Weiner is interviewed by Ha’aretz, with reporter Rita Kupfer noting the synchronicity of Season Two ending as Wall Street collapsed in the real world. Here’s an elegant quote from that interview:

Peggy wants to do what Don does, and Joan wants to do what Betty does.

January Jones gets pub and a pic at Ecorazzi for her work on shark conservation.

Here’s an absolutely awesome vintage photo essay on secretaries from the 1940s through the 1970s. (Thanks to Basketcase Patti.)

There’s a new biography of Helen Gurley Brown coming out this month. She’s the author of Sex & the Single Girl, which was a model used to build the Joan Holloway character. (Thanks to Basketcase Jackie.)

Tim Goodman recommends killing your premium cable bill, giving up on the unpredictability of network scheduling, and buying or renting TV series instead. Of course, Mad Men is on his list of series to see.

Mad Men won the BAFTA for International television series (h/t Basketcase Helen).

A consumer guide to premium cable lists Mad Men and Breaking Bad as reasons that AMC is not so “basic” anymore.

An AMC exec discusses the problems of DVRs (for television executives”the rest of us love them).

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeld have formed a production company. H/t to Debbi.

Basket of Kisses gets media love from The Guardian and from Baristanet. Yay, us!

SPOILERS: To quote my sister, “we don’t condone ‘em, we don’t read ‘em, and we sure as shit don’t want ‘em brought back here.” It is rumored that these two links will bring you straight to Season 3 spoilers; not having clicked, I cannot say. Don’t you DARE come back here to discuss them.

  1. Without discussing them, both those links will lead you to the same (maybe even true) spoilers.

  2. For the first time in the history of TV, the consumer has become empowered to watch the shows they like without having to watch the commercials…

Wait. Didn't we get empowered with VCRs?

  3. The Tim Goodman article missed out by not mentioning that blogs have taken the place of the water cooler. Even after a show has ended, you can puruse old blog discussions and get new insights. (which I'm doing with The Wire right now. Some great discussions on TWOP, even though they are closed, it's worth reading.)

    • Donny, I agree. In fact, I started looking for show blogs long ago in order to replace water coolers. But even though old discussions are fun, nothing beats participation.

  4. Re the spoiler stuff: I saw that and purposely didn't hip y'all to it because it is VERY spoilery. Very cool, tho.

  5. I've been commercial skipping ever since they invented the mute button. Those dudes worrying about DVR's are really out of touch. If their series are compelling enough, fans will buy the DVD sets even though they've already watched the epis several times. I still have all my S2 Mad Men on my DVR, but I've preordered the DVDs.

  6. I've been commercial skipping since I learned to get off the couch and walk out the room. I'm such a luddite. The old school ways still work best, if you ask me. LOL.

  7. #8 You know what, tho, sometimes the blogs can be a drag. I feel like I would have enjoyed BSG a lot more if I'd ignored them. Then again, I don't think anything would have redeemed the last season and a half. That show was so good until it wasn't. I would say that the blogs actually kept me watching it even after I stopped enjoying the show, because I had developed relationships with other posters.

  8. #10 This blog will never be a drag, tho, of that I am certain. Scifi audience is a different demographic, let's just leave it at that.

  9. Thank you for linking to the spoilers. I know your policy, so I won't say anything more about them. Also, I thought the pictures of secretaries were a real hoot. I love that you post articles that are related to the time period of "Mad Men," but may not be directly related to the show itself. I love this blog. Keep up the great work.

  10. Without discussing them further, I have a friend who also received said information and was invited to PARTICIPATE, but was ultimately denied access because tape measures don’t lie.

  11. Speaking of blogs, the (New Jersey) Star Ledger's TV critic, does a hell of a job of writing about Mad Men on his blog:

    Season one, Madmen http://sepinwall.blogspot.com/search/label/Mad%20

    Season Two: http://sepinwall.blogspot.com/search/label/Mad%20

  12. Re: the MW interview

If you were Joan, wouldn't you prefer to get it on with Captain Awesome in the back of some bar than be subjected to more of the Bad Doctor?

Seriously, we just had the rerun of "Night to Remember," with Joan apparently regretting not being considered for the permanent TV job, so it's not quite that simple.

  13. Should have figured you gals would be on top of it. I was mucho impressed by Alan's writing, but I found it via other links.

I grew up in New Jersey and the (then Newark) Star Ledger was our Sunday paper, also the daily of record, at least for the Northern part of the state.

Many years ago, I wrote for a local weekly Jersey newspaper, and my boyfriend for the Morristown based daily — so I know from Jersey news, and have also since written entertainment news for other papers and magazines.

And again, I'm much impressed by Alan's talent, not only stylistically, but his ability to review and reflect on our Mad Men.

  14. Jon Hamm on "Kevin Pollack's Chat Show:"
    http://kevinpollakschatshow.com/

It's a pretty good interview except you have to sit through about 17 minutes of Kevin Pollack talking about absolutely NOTHING before the interview starts (tried to FF, but couldn't). They talk about Don giving Bobbie "the shocker" at Lutece, about how Jon got the part, about the season 3 spoilers, about Jon's stint on SNL, about whether he prefers "theater" or "theatre," plus a bunch of other things. It's good stuff. And Jon even treats us to his imitation of Larry King.

    Check it.

  15. Ugh, I'm so squidged out by that Telegraph of Calcutta article. I kind of liked the idea of what they're saying — womanly curves are good — but it ended up sounding like more of the same old Thou Shalt Look Like This ridiculousness that women are always subjected to. Hot picture of Christina though, with Secretary Super Pen on fine display.

  16. AMC has confirmed that Mad Men will debut in August; apparently the LA Times has given the date, August 16:

  17. Jan on the cover of Harper's Bazaar.
