lk, I adore Jon Hamm and I think he's a brilliant actor doing great work. But not winning is not "overlooked." He was chosen among every lead on every dramatic TV series for one of only five nominations; chosen by two different voting bodies (SAG and GG). That's not "overlooked." Hugh Laurie is also a terrific actor doing top-notch work, and it's not his fault that the show he's on is not as well-written as Mad Men.

From the SAG Rules:

A Television Ensemble shall be defined as those actors employed under a Series Contract, as specified in sections 5, 6, 7 or 8 of the Screen Actors Guild Television Agreement, who are billed in the main series titles, and have appeared in more than half the episodes originally aired during the Awards Year. In the event that an actor joins a series during the fall season of the calendar year — the second of the two television seasons falling in the Awards period — the actor may be
deemed eligible if the actor appeared in the majority of original episodes aired during the second season, provided that the actor also meets the other criteria given above. Actors who do not meet the eligibility requirements, as part of the ensemble announced as the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble, but who appeared in three or more episodes of that show in a calendar year are eligible to receive a certificate.

I would guess there are SAG rules -- I thought that there might be a nominated episode that would define the cast.

IMDB has the nomination list, the child actors aren't on it though, I think it's whoever is considered a regular cast member. Last year's list is very different...it has Maggie Siff and Anna Dudek. I guess it goes by majority of eps an actor is in to be considered a guest actor or not.

Here's what I've been trying to figure out--who wins?

I mean, I wouldn't have thought of the kids had I not seen them. So cool, but I wouldn't have thought of it.

What about Peyton List (Jane) and Robert Morse? And then there are the periodics like Julie McNiven (Hildy), Crista Flanagan (Lois Sadler), and Anne Dudek (Francine)? And the S2 (so far) people; the Barretts, Father Gill, Anna Draper, Peggy's mom and sister? (And last season the same question would include Helen and Glen Bishop, Dr. Wayne, Midge and Rachel. I am home right now with a migraine; can you tell by how I got lazy about the actors' names?)

Anyway, I wonder these things.

"Once again Mad Men wins as an ensemble, (as it should), but Jon Hamm gets overlooked as best actor–again."

Honestly I am surprised that he keeps getting ignored, other than the Globes that one time. He has so much heat right now, I assumed he would just win everything like Alec Baldwin is.

Maybe the upcoming Emmy's will be different, but I have a feeling the women of Mad Men will rack up the nominations and be the focus. The actresses got so much buzz this year; EW, TV Guide and NY Mag really praised and promoted them.

Once again Mad Men wins as an ensemble, (as it should), but Jon Hamm gets overlooked as best actor--again. Could it be that he is so mouthwateringly handsome, it offsets his considerable talent as a true "character" actor? Sigh. I can't imagine anyone else portraying Don Draper. He has truly "made the role his own".

My mom and I actually both cheered when they won. I'm so glad to be among their "dozens" of fans!
