Mad News, January 10-17, 2008

January 17, 2009 By: Deborah Lipp Category: Actors & Crew, Awards, Media-Web-News

This news does not include the fact that Mad Men won the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama. We so already knew that. Nor that Matt Weiner signed. Cuz, y’know.

  • Buddy TV did the top 100 television episodes of 2008. Ambitious! Flight 1 came in at #45.
  • The Mad Men Golden Globes party was the place to be. Well, DUH!
  • The Daily News is gossiping about how much swag January Jones snagged backstage at the Globes, and snickers at Jeremy Piven’s Speed-the-Plow departure.
  • Mad Men is one of the reasons that staying home and watching cable is better than going to the movies.
  • This cracks me up: An article about Jenna Fischer opens like this:

She had just finished talking with a pal — the actor who plays the pretentious writer guy on Mad Men when I pounced.

    Michael, you reading?

  • January Jones discusses kissing Jon Hamm.
  • This is so interesting: January Jones works with a charity trying to save sharks. In addition, the photo accompanying the article is the best glam shot of her Golden Globes outfit I’ve seen.
  • USA Today discusses the impact of awards (minimal) on a show’s ratings.
  • Speaking of awards: The Costume Designer’s Guild has nominated Janie Bryant for “Outstanding Period/Fantasy Television Series.”
  • The Director’s Guild has nominated Dan Bishop for a Production Design award for the episode The Jet Set. I would have thought it would be hard to single out a single episode’s production design, but the Jet Set surely stands alone.

I’ve been reading along for a while now. I just wanted to drop you a comment to say keep up the good work.

I am tempted to say that Tampa Bay reporter confused Michael Gladis and Rich Sommer (who was on The Office and is now friends with Jenna Fischer).

OTOH, Michael Gladis was drinking for hours before the press caught up to him, so you never know…

If our friends in the MM cast and crew really are comfortable putting away the booze (a wee joke?), they should have more fun with the press at these events. Hazing newcomers by impersonating each other: that’s fun for the whole family, especially after everyone’s had a few.

This isn’t something I’d advocate for us on the Basket. But I’m begging off because I’m a freaking lightweight. :)

    Jeff, thanks for the de-lurk.

There were other tv shows in 2008? Huh.

I have to say I agree with the Art Director’s Guild nomination of The Jet Set. Everything about that episode was amazing looking. I remember Matt Weiner saying he was heavily influenced by the photos of Slim Aarons, who was known for “photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” The photos at the Kaufman house in Palm Springs (“Poolside Gossip” and “Kaufman House”) are particularly reminiscent of the episode.

    BTW Lipp Ladies :) ,

January Jones has a big photo spread in the new Vanity Fair (the one with Cate Blanchett on the front).

She looks amazing in it. She’s not my favourite of the ladies on MM, but man, she made my day with that spread.

Tried to make a post of this but looks like my posting privileges are gone. E Online’s Kristin is reporting that Elizabeth Moss is engaged to SNL’s Fred Armisen.

    Whoah!

And also? I just checked, you look like an ‘author’ to me. I will have Deborah see if she can diagnose.
