Weiner Gave BoK a Shout Out!

January 12, 2009 By: hullaballoo Category: Awards, Lipp Sisters/Basket, Matthew Weiner

Weiner teased Tom O’Neil (columnist with LATimes.com “The Envelope”) about Tina Fey’s speech, but then gave the Basket a holla and said he really appreciated the fans who talk intelligently about the show. And yes, he mentioned the site by name.

I wanted to actually include the video, but for some reason, the “embed” function doesn’t work…unless Roberta does me a solid:

(Note from Roberta. I hold the secret to all embedding. Watch the whole thing, but it’s at the end, at around 1:55.)

Looky…

Congratulations on the Shout Out from MW! He’s a class act in every way.

Wow, that was really cool. Lipp sisters, you should be really proud. You have created something special here. And it’s great that Matt Weiner continues to recognize your efforts as well. Kudos.

    Oops.

  4. # 4 Roberta Lipp Says:

No seriously. Deborah can’t do it either. I am the magical embedder.

Hull, what the hull are you doing up?

  5. # 5 Roberta Lipp Says:

Holy crap. It was lost, then I found it.

    @ #4 Roberta:

Can’t sleep, working on a project, and wonking the blog, obviously. Sorry about that. Maybe I should try a little shut-eye instead.

No apologies necessary, I just can’t help but notice the hour…

    THANK YOU for the find!

    Awesome.

Also, as MW jokingly referenced his pr0n at the end of that clip, I could not help bu think of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back:

Jay: What the f*** is the Internet?
Holden: The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies and share pornography with one another.

    Equally true for TV.

  10. # 10 Deborah Lipp Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 10:27 am

    Holy crap!

Even having read the post, and knowing he was going to give us the shout-out in advance, my heart raced to hear that acknowledgment with my very own ears. So for you, hull, to have heard it with no warning, omigodz.

  11. # 11 Karl Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 10:35 am

And that’s great video via JS. More proof that Pete & Joan need scenes. More fun from JH. MW still sounding upbeat about a contract. CH having his back. And a great exit. ;-)

  12. # 12 Karl Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 10:36 am

And now you really can bring up the shoutout!

    Deserved, natch.

  13. # 13 Joy Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

I would die for more Pete and Joan scenes (I was so pleased when they shed light on Joan and Paul’s backstory in NvK). I know that Joan and Pete probably wouldn’t plausibly interact in a longer storyline based one their positions, but these two coworkers are the most guileful people at SC, it would be amazing to see longer interactions between them.

Oh, and rock on for the shoutout, ladies!

  14. # 14 Karl Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 1:18 pm

And a new tagline is born.
    ____

Actually, I think it would be pretty easy to come up with some Pete/Joan business. Joan is the office manager; while we mostly see her riding herd on the secretarial pool, she’s in the traffic meetings, etc. Not tough to run into problems caused by Pete (perhaps with Hildy).

  15. # 15 Deborah Lipp Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Matt would never do that. Matt would never write a scene that doesn’t organically belong in the script just to see two actors working together. The acting serves the script.

  16. # 16 Jules Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Yes, but isn’t it fun to imagine those two becoming co-conspirators? It would be like two smart, maniuplative, evil geniuses joining forces to thwart the hero/heroine. Well, it would be if MM were a comic book!

Kudos on the shout out! Even though I’ve only been reading this blog for less than a week, I feel strangely proud.

  17. # 17 hullaballoo Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 2:13 pm

Look at that. It’s already part of the header. Heh.

  18. # 18 Deborah Lipp Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

We were changing the header twice a day for a while there. It’s megafun.

How about that, ladies? You love him, and he loves you right back. That’s so sweet it doesn’t even belong in Hollywood. :)

  22. # 22 Karl Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

    D.Lipp,

I was not suggesting that MW do Pete/Joan business just to do it — nor was I suggesting that the two would have a particular dynamic.

I noted on an earlier thread that it was sort of odd that Pete and Joan had so little interaction over the course of two seasons, for reasons I elaborate upon in #14 here. I presume it’s because MW and the other writers never had a story they wanted to tell (or point they wanted to make) using that pairing (just as they haven’t had a need to bring JJ into the office more than once).

My comment was really more of a reflection on how, even after two seasons, there are plenty of potential spaces and dynamics in the MM universe left basically unexplored. And that — given that CH and VK are two of the higher profile cast members — there might well be interesting stories to be told (or points to be made) with them. S2 tended to follow characters home more, which means there’s still plenty of stuff to mine at the office.

  23. # 23 JS Says:
    January 12th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Seriously Matt is totally cool, I know the creators of Gossip Girl are also very involved with what is said on the internet about their show. He’s right though, this season there was a ton of online hype for January that eventually led to some mainstream media love, especially the Vanity Fair spread…that was a quite a big deal for her.

I hope they clean up at the SAG’s in a couple weeks and more of the cast makes it in at The Emmy’s. Awards season is so much fun!

    “Deberta”?

Deberta. Sounds like a great name for Don’s perfect secretary … every day, she’d look a little different. And then, just when he gets used to her, she’d look a little different again.

    I like it.

    January 12th, 2009 at 11:03 pm

I hear you Karl. You’re right about the unexplored spaces. And Matt adores and trusts his actors, and is totally up for giving them challenging new spaces to go into.
