I just posted Mad News like two minutes ago, but I didn’t want to leave this out, because it’s a big one: Jon Hamm is one of Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainers of the Year.

19. JON HAMM
Before Jon Hamm guest-hosted Saturday Night Live on Oct. 25, most people would’ve been surprised to learn that he’s a self-professed ”huge comedy nerd.” But by the time the 37-year-old Mad Men star busted out ”Jon Hamm’s John Ham: the ham you can eat in the bathroom,” it was clear that the real Hamm is ” forgive us ” a real ham. And then there’s the simmering intensity he brings to Don Draper, 1960s Madison Avenue adman extraordinaire, whose dark and mysterious life took an even darker and more mysterious turn this year on the critically acclaimed AMC drama. Says Hamm, ”It would be the most boring thing in the world to play a guy who’s just nice to everybody and only pets puppies and makes soup.”

  1. I don't want it to pass without comment, so I'll note that — as nice as that sort of notice is — I am pretty sure everyone in the Basket would have rated him higher. Of course, most of those rated higher had bigger marketing machines pushing them, too. A stint on 30 Rock with No. 2 should put a bigger spotlight on the talent — esp. the comedic talent — of JH. It's evident in those S1 commentaries, esp. "Red in the Face," but others as well.

For example, during "Nixon v. Kennedy," as VK and RS talk about the pathos of the scene where Adam runs after the departing train, JH says something like, "I think things are going to turn out fine for Adam…" Or, some time after noting that he had to shave his sideburns for the Korean scenes (which were shot first), during the scene with Rachel, RS asks if those are fake sideburns, JH answers: "Mine are fake; Maggie's are real."

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
