I’ve been unable to figure out where Pete and Don were in The Jet Set. I’ve been Googling like a mad woman and I can’t figure out if there was a real aerospace convention in Santa Monica in September of 1962.

If any of you happen to know this information, please ‘fess up.

  1. I don't know, though the Santa Monica-based RAND Corp. played a big part in coming up with MIRVs. They would likely have been on the drawing boards in '62, though I think the MM presentation exaggerates what would have been possible for sub-launched missiles.

MM referred to astronauts being there, so you may want to check The Right Stuff for a mention…

  2. There was much discussion during the early 1960's at Caltech about disarmament, the Cold War, the Military Industrial Complex.

Caltech published a journal called 'Engineering and Science'. From some of the articles you can see that there were many seminars/presentations given on these topics, one of which the MM team could have attended.

June 1962: 'Technical Cooperation: The Role of Science and Engineering in Promoting Economic Development.' This article was part of program funded by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation. Caltech hosted guest speakers through out
the year for this program. http://calteches.library.caltech.edu/224/01/olive

  3. I think the specific convention the MM guys went to was fictional, because it took place in September and I find no references to it. I've looked!

  4. Dear Lipp Sisters, I think I've found it!!!!

MW may have moved it to September instead of the October date when it was held.

Reference to the conference is found at MORS.
    MORS is very interesting….

"The Military Operations Research Society (MORS) has proudly served the Department of Defense analytic community for over forty years. Under the sponsorship of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff and the Under Secretary for Science and Technology, Department of Homeland Security, the objective of MORS is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of military operations research.

Members of the Society include a cross section of the best defense analysts, operators and managers from government, industry and academia. Their involvement fosters professional interchange within the military operations research community, the sharing of insights and information on challenging national security issues and specific support to decision makers in the many organizations and agencies that address national defense. MORS provides an array of meetings and publications to expose our members to the broad spectrum of thought by distinguished analysts and senior members of our community. In particular, the Society provides a unique environment in which classified presentations and discussions can take place with joint service participation and peer criticism from the full range of students, theoreticians, practitioners and users of military analysis. We might not always agree with one another's conclusions, but MORS provides the venue for communicating with each other, focusing on ideas, and heightening understanding between those with different points of view. "

And they held their tenth annual meeting “Command and Control,” Systems Development Corporation at Santa Monica, California, 16, 17, 18 October 1962. (DTIC: AD 334 997L)

  5. I'm so uninterested in this. I can't even read through it. That's just me.

However I've had this song in my head all day.

    I love this song.

  6. #5 @Roberta,

The short version is that these conferences are like speed dating for the Military-Industrial Complex.

  7. k

  8. BTW, iirc, Sept. '62 was the month JFK gave his address to Rice University about going to the Moon, "not because it is easy…"

  9. I was hoping to use the convention to get an exact date for the recap, but I do have James Meredith and the Dylan concert, so I'm pretty close.

  10. #7 @Roberta

'k' — what does that mean?

  11. Like okay, only shorter.

  12. Does that mean you still like me?

Or am I just a 'short' man?

  13. P.S.
    Roberta,

You are so smart and wonderful, having brought this website into existence,
that sometimes I just want to somehow thank-you in a 'cool-current cultural' way!

[By the way, in France, a 'short man" might mean not intellectually 'strong'.]

  14. 'K' is the ultra-abbreviated way of saying 'Ok' which I tend to use in instances when I have absolutely no comment on the information I've received but want to acknowledge that I've received it. I use it more in text messages. It may well be, in fact, 'cool-current cultural'. Or it may possibly be rude and dismissive. I'm not sure.

  15. @Roberta (#5)

    A bit off-topic, but:

I associate that song with a bad rollover car crash I was in years ago – it was on the radio at the time of the accident and I was singing along with it happily until some jerk miscalculated while passing me and rammed me off the road.

It's funny how we form associations with music. I can't say that I like the song anymore, but you just reminded me how grateful I am that I came out of the crash with just minor injuries. I've been having a bad week and that puts everything in perspective. Thanks.

  16. I also just realized that the crash was the catalyst for a lot of the amazing things I have in my life right now because I made changes in my life and career that put me on a completely different path. And that reminds me that the worst things often give birth to wonderful new things, which is good to keep in mind these days.

So, sorry for the threadjacking. I think I may owe you for that (unintentional) therapy session.

  17. Roberta, everyone I know uses "k" in messaging at the office, so I'm pretty sure it's not at all rude.

D-O A, that's an amazing story, thanks for sharing it.

  18. Glad that you're OK D-OA!

Great info John R! And so very true with the "speed dating" aspect. :-D

I've got an "Aviation Week and Space Technology" magazine from May 1962, but all it lists for October on the event calendar is a "Symposium on Dynamics of Manned Lifting Planetary Entry" for Oct. 29-31. Not exactly missile talk. :-)

I scanned a couple of ads from the magzine in case anyone wants to see what the ad guys might be working on. It's pretty dry stuff, chock full of technical copy. But sometimes the original artwork on those "rocket" ads from that era were some of the best pieces of visionary modern art in advertising.

  19. Santa Monica by Everclear definitely could be the soundtrack for The Jet Set and/or The Mountain King. I'm just saying.

  20. Jannah, I rewatched The Inheritance yesterday, and I'm sure now that they went to the convention in September, not October.

  21. D-O A, what a story, and no way could you have been more off-topic than I was ; )

Susan M, you are so right.

    Deb–K.

  22. Thanks Deborah! I took another look at the calendar and there isn't anything listed for September in CA. John R's find looks like the best so far.
    :-)

  23. It may well be, in fact, ‘cool-current cultural’. Or it may possibly be rude and dismissive. I’m not sure.

    It's kinda both.

  24. I read where Caltech sponsored some sort of of symposium on the Cold War in early October 1962. But that was held in Pasadena, not Santa Monica.

  25. It may well be, in fact, ‘cool-current cultural’. Or it may possibly be rude and dismissive. I’m not sure.

    It’s kinda both.

Actually, when used as a text message, it really is just the quick acknowledgement, i.e., message received. Yes I'm picking up the pizza or whatever. K = we're really done texting and we're both tired of it 'cause we went like three volleys too long so we're done but yes I heard you.

It's in here that it's kinda both.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
