Don’t touch that dial!

November 03, 2008 By: Deborah Lipp Category: Lipp Sisters/Basket

Maybe this post is too late. Maybe many of you have already left us, and will be back next summer. That’s okay. We’ll miss you, but it’s okay.

For those of you who are still here, and wondering whether Basket of Kisses has anything to offer between seasons, let me first remind you that we are just about exactly one year old. Meaning, we started post-season. Our first two posts were about Peggy’s pregnancy. And what we found was that 13 episodes of Mad Men was enough nuance, meaning, and symbolism to keep us talking. Plus, there’s media buzz and awards season.

So here’s what you can expect between seasons:

  • All the juicy, succulent nuance and symbolism discussion you can eat
  • More interviews. I have not yet begun to transcribe! (Neither have Roberta or hullaballoo)
  • “Mad News” focusing on media buzz, career moves by our actors (like, other roles) and awards. Plus other stuff as it arises
  • Massive updates to our character bible, recaps, and quotes pages. We intend (a) full recaps for every season 2 episode and (b) a reorganization of old recaps so they are conventionally linear. We are going to be totally caught up before season 3 begins, or we will be very embarrassed. Probably the former.
  • Plus we’re adding some extra info to recaps.
  • Plus we may introduce new features.
  • Did I mention more interviews?
  • More events and contests are also likely.

Stick around.

P.S. We’re totally open to Basketcase suggestions, leave them here in comments. But we can’t promise anything, because the existing list above is already ambitious for people with day jobs.

I’ll be sticking around. But I have to note that an MM blog is one of the few places where the dial metaphor still really works. ;-)

Karl, I thought about saying “Don’t touch that basket” but it sounded icky somehow.

I take your point, and think the original metaphor works fine in this context.

Yep, Hollie, we posted that last week.

Femme, we can MORE than stand you.

  21. # 21 Femme1 Says:
    November 5th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Oh good! I was a little afraid I wore out my welcome! :>

I’ve been thinking a great deal about one of the larger themes of MM, one of which Matt Weiner touched on in his interview with you—the whole art vs. business theme that was brought to a head in the final episode of season 2—and would love to talk about that.

One thing that has stuck with me is the significance of Kinsey’s trip down south. It seems like there should be more to the story than he took the trip and got dumped by Sheila (likely for being a pretentious jerk). Sheila’s arc worked to show the tension between Kinsey and Joan. It still showed the racial lines of the early 1960s. They didn’t need to add the trip to the story. Don could have kicked Paul off the California trip anyway. It just doesn’t seem complete to me.

In light of this week’s election miracle, I have had this on my mind a lot. I would be curious to know what other Basketteers think. I don’t buy the story line being put in for convenience. I think it will come back next season, but how? Why was it there?

Just pondering… I will check back often. I love the site. Keep up the good work!
