This is a shorter than usual Mad News, but there is stuff here that Basketcases have been clamoring for.
- Big juicy interview from Mo Ryan (The Watcher) with Matthew Weiner.
- The Wall Street Journal interviews Elisabeth Moss.
- John Slattery will be in an Actor’s Fund benefit reading of All About Eve. (h/t Basketcase Brenda Starlet.)
- The Simpsons!
- Black & White: Birmingham’s City Paper, has a lovely article relating Mad Men to the movies, and recommending movies of the era that you’ll connect with if you’re a Mad Men fan.
- Scott Patrick Wagner juxtaposes Mad Men with our current political and social climate in a smart essay.
- There’s a very interesting article about showrunners in The Hollywood Reporter. Matt Weiner is quoted towards the end, but the whole thing is worth reading.
- A brief profile of Christina Hendricks which mentions the weight thing and What Would Joan Do?
- This article about the contract negotiations between Matt Weiner and Lionsgate is less alarmist than most. I am not publishing the alarmist ones, guys, it’s crazy to get all worked up over rumors. It’s like Don said in the finale, we don’t know what’s really going on, you know that.
- In a gorgeous essay, the Atlantic contemplates “The Negro Don Draper.”
- Jon Hamm is going to guest star on 30 Rock! Ausiello’s got the scoop. (h/t to Fan Grrl Magnet.)
- Don Draper roundup with Jon Hamm wallpaper. My new desktop is “Jon Hamm’s John Ham,” what’s yours?
- The Modesto Bee wonders how Mad Men can have become so much a part of the culture without getting killer ratings.
- The Louisville Courier-Journal discusses Mad Men Twittering.
The first time I watched Pete Campbell on “Mad Men,” the Emmy-winning series set in 1962 about ad execs and their professional and private lives, the preppy, tightly wound account executive seemed so familiar.
It wasn’t until I saw him compared to Pee-wee Herman on a blog that the light switched on. Yes. Pete is Pee-wee’s evil twin! I had to tell Campbell.
- The Culture Vulture summarizes Mad Men Internet chat without once mentioning the Basket. Which obviously makes it an inadequate article.
- Tim Goodman, always great when he writes about Mad Men, has a list of 10 things about seasons 2 and 3 you’ll want to read.
-
The Gawker muses on “Why Poor People Don’t Watch Mad Men.”

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

The piece on showrunning was quite interesting — and sorta ties together what I've been saying in the "negotiations" thread and the E. Moss thread. H'wood folk are navigating strange new terrain, looking for ways to promote and monetize their work on multiple platforms. MM in general and MW in particular have been working these angles pretty hard (a necessity given the nature of the show and its location on AMC), but I also think of Tina Fey at the Emmys, giving an acceptance speech where she tells people all the different ways you can watch 30 Rock — a show on NBC!
Help, I'm curious about something….. Love your site, by the way, I discovered it over the summer and look at it several times a day. Yesterday, I posted a comment about Jon Hamm being in talks to be on 30Rock but didn't know where to post it so that you could put it in the news. I ended up posting it on the discussion about matt weiner: excerpts part 2. Now, I see it in the news section but not because of me, which doesn't bother me at all, I was just happy to see it in the news section. My question is……..if someone does come across some interesting tidbit about MM, where can we go to post it on your site so that it gets to you and your readers?
Thanks ladies and keep up the great work.

Everyone,
Not Mad News per se, but Rich Sommer has some good stuff on his blog about attending SNL and such.
With the election on Tuesday, Vinnie, John, Michael and Rich all want you to VOTE!

YES YES YES ….Jon Hamm on 30 Rock!!!
I'm really excited about this.
meznok- I am often confused about that. But there are a couple of email addresses you can send news to which I’m sure someone smarter than me can give you.
I’m so excited about jon on 30 Rock! 30 Rock and Mad Men are the only two shows I’m a huge fan of.
And I’m glad you saw the article in Black and White. It’s a great magazine and I’m always happy to hear that anyone else in Birmingham knows what Mad Men even is…
Jon will be amazing on 30 Rock.
meznok, I got that link from about six people, plus my own news feed. I deal with a varying influx of news, sometimes a little, but on finale week, quite a lot. And I apologize for not always being able to remember who sent me a link. I really try to, but sometimes, as in this case, I get the news independently or from more than one source or both.
Email works best. A comment in a previous "Mad News" is the second best, because it doesn't interrupt a discussion.
We totally appreciate you guys sending us stuff, even if once in a while we're too busy to thank you properly.
