A kinder, gentler way to get mad at AMC

April 17, 2008 By: Deborah Lipp Category: AMC

So, AMC. They harsh our happy, wrinkle our smooth, and damage our calm.

But, y’know, they also like their fans. They’re trying. They have a Talk Forum just for MM fans (not that it’s anywhere near as good as Basket of Kisses). It might not be the best or the coolest, but they are interested in what the fans have to say.

Look, I love this show. I want AMC to do a great job with the business end of this show, because if it’s cancelled, there goes my blogging hobby (not really, but you know what I mean). I don’t want to be one of those people doing a letter-writing campaign to help save a cancelled show. It almost never works and it’s depressing. I signed like fifty petitions to save Angel and what did I get? A flippin’ comic book. Suck.

So what I’d prefer to do is start the letter-writing campaign now. Let AMC know how much we want Mad Men season one back on the air between now and the time season two starts. Suggest good time slots. Suggest a marathon. Suggest lots and lots of visibility. Let AMC know that we’re telling our friends about Mad Men and they want to know how to start watching it and we have to tell them there are no showings in May! Ask them to help us get our friends watching.

I’m not going to put words in your mouth because individual letters from individuals work best. It’s like writing to your congressperson; be polite, be brief, and state your point clearly. And your point is that you want to see Mad Men in May and June. Often. And preferably not at midnight.

Email them at: info@amctv.com

Snail mail at:

    AMC Viewer Mail
    AMC
    200 Jericho Quadrangle
    Jericho, NY 11753

And for good measure, here’s the Talk Forum post on re-run scheduling.

That’s a really good idea. I’ll work on writing one up this weekend. :)

  2. # 2 Susan Says:
    April 17th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Isn’t it starting to replay again at midnight on Sundays/Mondays? My TIVO has it programmed.

  3. # 3 Roberta Lipp Says:
    April 17th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

According to AMC’s schedule, the next two Sunday/Monday midnights will show episodes 1 and 2. Beyond that, they have nothing. Now I suppose that COULD change, but for now, their entire May schedule is devoid of Mad Men.

  4. # 4 Shelly Says:
    April 17th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

They can easily find a day to air it at a better hour.

    AMC is just lazy…

  5. # 5 Susan Says:
    April 18th, 2008 at 8:30 am

I’m thinking AMC is stupid, not lazy. Holy moly. Unless they have some kind of arrangement w/Lionsgate that makes it too expensive to continue to air? who knows. Makes no sense.

  6. # 6 Eme Says:
    April 18th, 2008 at 10:52 am

As it is a Sunday at midnight time is preposterous, if they want to attract new viewers.

  7. # 7 Roberta Lipp Says:
    April 18th, 2008 at 10:56 am

When I got my first on-air radio job, it was Sunday evenings. Like, 6 or 7pm. Know why? Because they knew no one would be listening. Sundays at midnight is the biggest joke ever.

  8. # 8 Kay Says:
    April 18th, 2008 at 12:00 pm

Guess this bad marketing idea over Mad Men is what happened when AMC is clueless about it’s first foray into original shows….They need to go all “Bravo,” repeats upon repeats upon marathons…..

  9. # 9 Roberta Lipp Says:
    April 18th, 2008 at 12:47 pm

BRAVO understands the old radio adage… when your jocks are getting sick of a song is when your audience is just getting to know it.

Grant you, BRAVO goes beyond that point with their never-ending stream of Top Chef marathons. But it works. The loyal, for the most part, get loyaler, and newbies jump on board all the time, ready to watch the coming season.

  10. # 10 Eme Says:
    April 18th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Or have it on ONDemand, like they did during the summer. That’s how I first caught the show.

  11. # 11 Deborah Lipp Says:
    April 18th, 2008 at 1:40 pm

So true about Bravo. Roberta knows I started watching Project Runway this year, because I caught one of the endless repeats while I was sick and got hooked. I was able to TiVo the whole season and get caught up before the finale, because they just show them and show them and show them.

If AMC did that, people wouldn’t be intimidated by Mad Men. Let’s face it, slow and thoughtful can be intimidating.

  12. # 12 Roberta Lipp Says:
    April 18th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

But you happen to catch one, you kind of like it, and next thing you know, you want to see what happens next.
